Arizona Diamondbacks
Team: Arizona Diamondbacks
Total Saves: 15
Closer: Paul Sewald
(5/2) After setting a record with 17 pitchers recording at least one save during the 2025 campaign, Arizona's bullpen has been far more stable to open 2026 thanks to veteran Paul Sewald. After training at Driveline Baseball during the offseason, Sewald re-joined the D'Backs and immediately became a candidate to open the season as closer. He's pitched well enough to retain primary closing duties through the first month and change of 2026, recorded 7 of Arizona's 9 saves through early May. Eventually, A.J. Puk (elbow) and Justin Martinez (elbow) will return once their done rehabbing from Tommy John surgery. Puk, who received an internal brace, indicated recently that "he hoped to be back in early May." Whether the team allows him to return that fast is a different story, but it appears he's likely to return before the 2026 All-Star break. Martinez is tentatively targeting a return in August. Their returns could impact Sewald's stability if he still is the team's closer at that point, but for now this appears to be Sewald's job.

Sacramento Athletics
Team: Sacramento Athletics
Total Saves: 16
Closer: Committee
(5/2) The Athletics went from having one of the most stable closing situations in baseball to one of the most unsettled after they traded Mason Miller at last year's deadline. After a month and change of the 2026 campaign, it can still be a guessing game for who will get the call for the ninth-inning. Four different relievers have accounted for the Athletics' 11 saves thus far, as Mark Kotsay has yet to commit to a primary closer. That said, Jack Perkins has gained some momentum of late, securing 3 of the team's past 4 saves. Perkins is clearly the A's best reliever and is the only one with a strikeout rate north of 30 percent. Kotsay may still call upon Mark Leiter, Joel Kuhnel or Hogan Harris from time to time, but Perkins currently gives the team the best chance of converting save chances.

Atlanta Braves
Team: Atlanta Braves
Total Saves: 16
(5/6) Raisel Iglesias secured 5 of Atlanta's first 9 saves of the 2026 campaign, but the veteran closer slept on his shoulder wrong in mid-April and subsequently hit the IL with right shoulder inflammation. Iglesias' absence was brief after returning May 5 and immediately picking up his 6th saves of the season. Robert Suarez has been fantastic as well, posting both an ERA and WHIP under 1.00 through 13.2 frames. After leading the NL with 40 saves in 2025, the right-hander has gone 4-for-4 in save opportunities thus far. Manager Walt Weiss' unit currently ranks 3rd in the league with a 3.20 ERA.

  1. 6/29:A.J. Minter, who logged his first save of the season Tuesday at Philadelphia, has appeared in 3 games in 4 days. This makes Will Smith the likeliest candidate for a save chance if one were to arise Wednesday.
Baltimore Orioles
Team: Baltimore Orioles
Total Saves: 14
Closer: Ryan Helsley 15-Day IL
(5/2) Ryan Helsley, who signed a 2-year, $28 million deal with Baltimore this offseason, struggled last season, but is just one year removed from tallying an MLB-high 49 saves in 2024. With Felix Bautista (shoulder) likely out for 2026, Helsley opened as Baltimore's closer, securing 7 of the Orioles' first 10 saves before right elbow inflammation forced a trip to the injured list. An MRI confirmed no structural damage for Helsley, but he'll be sidelined until at least May 15. Comments from manager Craig Albernaz suggest Helsley may not need much more than a minimum-stay on the IL, but in the meantime, Rico Garcia, Andrew Kittredge and possibly Yennier Cano figure to be the leading candidates for saves in Baltimore.

Boston Red Sox
Team: Boston Red Sox
Total Saves: 12
(5/4) Aroldis Chapman entered 2026 coming off one of the most impressive seasons of his 16-year career. The southpaw was simply dominant in 2025, leading qualified relievers in ERA (1.17) and WHIP (0.70) while delivering the best walk rate (6.6%) of his career. While the Red Sox have stumbled to kick off 2026, Chapman has not. His ratios and walk rate are in line with last season's numbers and he's tied for 10th in the league with 6 saves through early May. However, if Boston continues to struggle in 2026, Chapman may become a trade candidate near the deadline.

  1. 6/27:Tanner Houck was placed on the restricted list Monday prior to Boston's three-game series at Toronto. Matt Strahm and John Schreiber are the likeliest candidates for save opportunities should any arise during the series.
  2. 10/11:Hansel Robles exited Game 3 of the ALDS on Sunday due to a stomach illness after allowing two runs in two-thirds of an inning. He should be considered day-to-day due to his illness. Assuming he tests negative for COVID-19, it wouldn't be surprising to see the right-hander available for Game 4 on Monday. It was the first earned run he's allowed since August 29.
  3. 10/5:Entering tonight's AL Wild Card game against the Yankees, Hansel Robles has not allowed an earned run in 15 consecutive outings. Both he and Adam Ottavino enter tonight's contest with two-days rest, while Garrett Richards and Garrett Whitlock have had one day of rest after both pitched on Sunday.
Chicago Cubs
Team: Chicago Cubs
Total Saves: 10
(5/4) Daniel Palencia's electric performance in the World Baseball Classic made his ADP skyrocket the closer we got to Opening Day. Unfortunately, Palencia's fantasy managers have been frustrated by his lack of saves thus far. A lat injury is partially to blame, as it held Palencia out for a few weeks on the IL. However, the flamethrowing hurler has returned and will be looking to add to his paltry save total through early May.

Cincinnati Reds
Team: Cincinnati Reds
Total Saves: 13
Closer: Committee
(5/6) Reds closer Emilio Pagan was carted off the field after one pitch during a May 5 appearance against the Cubs. The righty will have imaging done for a left hamstring injury, but he will be going on the IL. Reds manager Terry Francona is known for his preference of using 1 pitcher in the closer role and was true to that philosophy last season, using only 4 pitchers for saves (2nd-fewest in the league). Many times when a team's closer gets hurt, a committee results until someone emerges - the Reds have options if they go that route between Tony Santillan, Graham Ashcraft and Pierce Johnson - but it's likely Francona will stick with "one guy" and turn closing duties over to Santillan in the interim.

Colorado Rockies
Team: Colorado Rockies
Total Saves: 13
Closer: Committee
(5/6) Victor Vodnik, who finished second on the Rockies with 10 saves in 2025, tops this hierarchy after the first month-plus of the 2026 campaign. Vodnik has 4 of Colorado's 10 saves through early May, but it's tough to label him the "capital-C closer" due to his inconsistent performance along with manager Warren Schaeffer's tendency to call on others for save chances. Antonio Senzatela, who has picked up 2 saves thus far, could earn more chances given he's been the Rockies best reliever thus far. Zach Agnos also has 2 saves for Colorado, but has poor ratios like Vodnik. Seth Halvorsen - who led Colorado with 11 saves in 2025, but opened 2026 in Triple-A after a brutal spring - could eventually re-enter the mix for saves as he's performing much better in the minors. Not only are there plenty of targets for saves within Colorado's bullpen, the team isn't expected to win many games in 2026. They've lost 5 in a row and 6-of-their-last-7 games.

Chicago White Sox
Team: Chicago White Sox
Total Saves: 17
(5/6) The White Sox signed Seranthony Dominguez to a 2-year, $20 million deal this past offseason and manager Will Venable named him the team's closer shortly thereafter. The veteran righty has been tagged with 2 blown saves through early May, but figures to have some leash in the closer role due based on his experience in high-leverage (48 career saves) and the inexperience of Chicago's other options. Grant Taylor (6 saves in 2025) figures to be next in line in Chicago's hierarchy for saves.

Detroit Tigers
Team: Detroit Tigers
Total Saves: 10
Next in Line: Will Vest , Kyle Finnegan
(5/7) The Tigers bullpen ranked 26th in strikeouts (533) and 17th in ERA (4.05) last season, so there was a clear need to address the unit this offseason. After re-signing Kyle Finnegan and adding future Hall of Famer, Kenley Jansen, Detroit has seen improvement in both categories, ranking 11th in ERA (3.76) and 15th in strikeouts (138) through early May. However, Jansen and Finnegan have not performed particularly well - Jansen's ratios are inflated and he's blown 3 save chances, while Finnegan sports a 1.5 K-BB%. On the plus side, Jansen has secured 6 of Detroit's 8 saves (75% team saves share) and now sits in 3rd place on the all-time saves leaderboard as he approaches 500 for his career. Another offseason addition, Drew Anderson, has filled a multi-inning role and sports one of the highest K-rates on the team. Burch Smith actually leads Detroit relievers with a 34.5% strikeout rate.

Houston Astros
Team: Houston Astros
Total Saves: 14
Closer: Committee
(5/7) Hader's (biceps) stability as Houston's closer has been as high as it comes in the league, but a season-ending left shoulder strain in 2025 and biceps inflammation in spring training has resulted in an IL stint to begin 2026, and he won't make his season debut until at least late May. Bryan Abreu has been a dominant setup man over the past few seasons and filled in well as Houston's closer when necessary previously, but he's been unable to take advantage of that opportunity this year with 13 earned runs allowed through 12.1 innings. Enyel De Los Santos has stepped up for three saves but has now surrendered seven runs in his past seven outings. Bryan King has also picked up a couple saves - both in May - with he and De Los Santos appearing to be the favored options in the closer committee. There isn't much stability here, and the revolving door could continue until Hader is able to retake the reins.

  1. 7/1:Ryan Pressly has recorded a Save in each of the past 2 days. He has yet to work 3 games in a row this season, so it's likely a save chance would go to Rafael Montero on Friday.
  2. 9/29:Ryan Pressly is currently managing a knee issue and hasn't pitched since Saturday. Kendall Graveman was placed on the paternity list Tuesday. Look for Ryne Stanek or Yimi Garcia as the favorites to pitch in potential save opportunities for the next couple days if Pressley remains unavailable.
Kansas City Royals
Team: Kansas City Royals
Total Saves: 14
Closer: Lucas Erceg
Next in Line: Carlos Estevez 15-Day IL, Daniel Lynch
(5/7) Carlos Estevez led MLB with 42 saves last season, but diminished velocity and command issues during spring training, poor performance and injuries (foot, shoulder) that required an IL stint have marred his 2026 campaign. While the right-hander was demonstrating better velocity during live batting practice sessions with the Royals, his velo was back down once he kicked off his rehab assignment. He exited after facing just 3 batters and will return to the team for further testing. Manager Matt Quatraro indicated that he spoke with Estevez and the righty "didn't seem overly concerned," but Estevez's roller coaster season continues for now. At present, it's difficult to imagine Estevez reclaiming Kansas City's closer role, though it's possible if his tests come back clear. The one glimmer of hope for Estevez is that his bullpen-mates haven't performed well. Lucas Erceg is tied for 2nd in the league with 10 saves through early-May, but he sports a poor 4.9 K-BB%. Matt Strahm and Nick Mears have been solid, albeit unspectacular. Daniel Lynch has been a recent bright spot for this unit as the only Royals reliever with a K-rate north of 30 percent.

Los Angeles Angels
Team: Los Angeles Angels
Total Saves: 6
Closer: Committee
Next in Line: Ryan Zeferjahn , Kirby Yates , Ben Joyce 60-Day IL
(5/7) Jordan Romano claimed the closer job to start the year, but he was designated for assignment after allowing nine runs across his last five appearances for the Angels. Drew Pomeranz got the save chance later that day, but blew the opportunity and hasn't pitched to expectations thus far in 2026. Since Romano last recorded a save for Los Angeles back on April 6, a full month passed before the team recorded another. This time it was Ryan Zeferjahn getting the ninth-inning, who figures to be part of a committee alongside recent returnee from the IL, Kirby Yates, and potentially Sam Bachman. Bachman has been the Angels' best reliever through early May and leads the team with a 1.71 Game Leverage Index. Ben Joyce (shoulder) began a rehab assignment in late-April and could factor into the saves mix upon his return. However, at present, this is a bullpen to avoid for fantasy teams in need of saves.

Los Angeles Dodgers
Team: Los Angeles Dodgers
Total Saves: 12
Closer: Committee
Next in Line: Tanner Scott , Alex Vesia , Edwin Diaz 60-Day IL
(5/7) One month into the 2026 campaign - after signing a 3-year, $69 million with the Dodgers - closer Edwin Diaz was placed on the IL. Diaz had been shut down in mid-April due to concerns around a noticeable dip in his fastball velocity. Diaz had been averaging 95.4 mph on the pitch compared to 97.3 mph during the 2025 regular season. Ultimately, it was discovered that Diaz required arthroscopic surgery to remove loose bodies from his right elbow; a procedure that typically takes 2-to-3 months to recover from. With Diaz likely out until July, Tanner Scott is the favorite to handle closing duties in the interim. Not only has the southpaw recorded both of Los Angeles' saves since Diaz's injury, he has experience in the role and has been outstanding through early-May. Alex Vesia should mix in as well, having already recorded 2 saves in 2026 as well.

Miami Marlins
Team: Miami Marlins
Total Saves: 13
(5/7) With Ronny Henriquez (elbow) out for the 2026 campaign and Calvin Faucher failing to establish himself as a bona-fide closer last year, Miami sought a more established closer this offseason, signing veteran Pete Fairbanks to a 1-year, $13 million deal. Fairbanks finally managed to stay healthy for a full season in 2025, but hit the IL in late-April with a recurrence of the nerve issue that sidelined him back in April 2024. Fairbanks was sidelined for about three weeks in 2024 when the issue first surfaced. Tyler Phillips and Calvin Faucher have recorded one save apiece in Fairbanks' absence, but don't appear to be long for increase save chances with Fairbanks recently completing a bullpen session.

While Trevor Megill picked up Milwaukee's first 3 saves of the 2026 campaign, a string of poor outings forced manager Pat Murphy make a change at closer. Since Megill last recorded a save on Apr 17, Uribe has picked up 2 of Milwaukee's last 3 saves. However, Megill has gone scoreless in 5 of his last 6 outings, so we're reluctant to remove his committee label as he potentially rounds back into form.

Minnesota Twins
Team: Minnesota Twins

Closer: Committee
Next in Line: Yoendrys Gomez , Cole Sands 15-Day IL, Andrew Morris
(5/7) It has been difficult to identify the Twins' closer ever since they traded Jhoan Duran at the 2025 deadline. There's also a new manager in Minnesota, and while Derek Shelton typically had a primary closer during his time in Pittsburgh, he hasn't been afforded that luxury with his new squad. Through early May, the Twins have recorded 6 saves between 5 different relievers. They've only recorded 1 over the last month, with Justin Topa recording his team-leading second save on May 3. Sure enough, the draft market's favorite to lead the Twins in saves, Taylor Rogers, doesn't appear to be in the mix at all despite having the most experience (89 career saves) and previously serving as the Twins' full-time closer back in 2019. Of all the bullpens in baseball, this is one of the ugliest when it comes to forecasting saves.

New York Yankees
Team: New York Yankees
Total Saves: 14
(5/7) After four consecutive top-6 finishes in bullpen ERA, the Yankees slipped all the way to 23rd (4.37) last year. New York didn't do much to improve its bullpen for 2026 either, losing out on the star free-agent closers while also witnessing Devin Williams and Luke Weaver sign with the Mets this offseason. However, New York relievers are performing well thus far in 2026, ranking 3rd with a 3.22 ERA through early May. They rank 24th in strikeouts (119), but a few key relievers - Tim Hill and Ryan Yarbrough - aren't known for their strikeout prowess. David Bednar has recorded all 10 of the Yankees' saves thus far, thus increasing his stability as the team's closer. He hasn't been super sharp in 2026, but is 10-for-11 in save chances thus far. Camilo Doval and Fernando Cruz line up for ancillary saves, but both allow too much traffic on the basepaths to reliably handle full-time closing duties. It's worth noting that Doval has cut his walk rate, but a 6.23 ERA and 3 HR allowed through 13 innings sets Bednar apart from his closest competition for saves.

  1. 7/1:Aroldis Chapman was activated from the 15-day IL. Clay Holmes has worked 3 games in the last 5 days, but did not pitch yesterday. Don't be surprised if the Yankees elect to give Holmes another day of rest with Chapman back. It's possible Chapman gets the call tonight if a save opportunity were to arise.
  2. 6/29:Aroldis Chapman is likely to return Friday.
  3. 10/5:Entering tonight's AL Wild Card game, Aroldis Chapman has a career 6.43 ERA and 2.07 WHIP in 14 innings at Fenway Park. However, he logged a 2.70 ERA against Boston this season with a 8:4 K:BB in 6.2 innings, albeit with two home runs allowed.
  4. 9/29:Jonathan Loaisiga (shoulder) will likely be activated Wednesday.
Philadelphia Phillies
Team: Philadelphia Phillies
Total Saves: 15
Closer: Jhoan Duran
(5/7) We no longer have to worry about Rob Thomson's fluid approach to the ninth-inning, as he was fired after Philadelphia stumbled to a 9-19 record to open 2026. The Phillies have gone 8-1 since Don Mattingly took over managerial duties, thus easing some concerns that there wouldn't be as many save chances as expected in 2026. Jhoan Duran just returned to the club after missing more than 3 weeks of action with a left oblique strain. The hard-throwing right-hander did not go out on a rehab assignment, and it showed during his first appearance back with Philadelphia (1 IP, 1 ER, 3 BB). However, it shouldn't take long for Duran to return to closing duties. Brad Keller has benefitted with a few ancillary saves during Duran's absence, but the latter should see an 80+ precent team save share now that he's back.

(5/8) After picking up saves in back-to-back games, Gregory Soto once again appears to be the Pirates' preferred closing option. Soto has been lights out to begin the 2026 campaign, posting a 25:7 K:BB and 0.68 WHIP across his first 19.0 innings. Dennis Santana hasn't been nearly as sharp, posting a mere 1.4 K-BB percentage through 16.2 innings, but the righty ranks second on the team with two saves. However, he hasn't recorded one since April 15th and has allowed 6 earned runs over his last 4 appearances. He remains part of this 'committee' for now, but if he goes much longer without a save and Soto receives the next few save chances, we may label him with a setup tag. Justin Lawrence and Mason Montgomery could eventually surpass Santana in this hierarchy, as both possess higher strikeout upside.

(5/8) Seattle's bullpen has dealt with some adversity early on in the 2026 campaign. Former Nationals closer, Jose Ferrer, has been great, picking up 2 of the team's last 4 saves while sporting one of the best walk rates (3.6%) among qualified relievers. Ferrer might even be the team's top lefty reliever, even when Speier is healthy enough to return. Despite Munoz's 'struggles, his stability as the Mariners' closer remains High for now. (5/8) After Pete Fairbanks signed with Miami this past offseason, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reported the Rays were planning to deploy a closer-by-committee for 2026. Griffin Jax, Garrett Cleavinger and Edwin Uceta (shoulder) were named as the expected committee members, but none of the three have recorded a save through early May. In fact, Jax has transitioned to a starting role for Tampa Bay, while Bryan Baker has taken over closing duties. Baker has been outstanding, posting a 23.2 K-BB percentage through early May while rankings 6th in the league with 9 saves. Cleavinger may eventually receive save chances, but he recently returned after spending time on the IL with a calf injury. It's clear he's next in line, however, as he's picked up 5 holds in 6 appearances thus far. 1. 10/11:Collin McHugh will serve as the Rays' opening pitcher Monday against the Red Sox as part of a bullpen day in Game 4 of the ALDS, Manager Kevin Cash hasn't appointed a primary pitcher to work behind McHugh, as the Rays will instead likely turn to a cadre of arms to fill innings out of the bullpen. Josh Fleming, JT Chargois, Pete Fairbanks, J.P. Feyereisen, Andrew Kittredge and Matt Wisler tossed 20 pitches or fewer in Sunday's 13-inning loss, so the Tampa Bay bullpen should be relatively fresh for Monday's contest.
Texas Rangers
Team: Texas Rangers
Total Saves: 12
Closer: Jacob Latz
Next in Line: Jakob Junis , Cole Winn 15-Day IL
(5/2) After Tyler Alexander picked up the Rangers' first 2 saves of 2026, Jakob Junis has recorded 2 in a row. Meanwhile, Robert Garcia and Chris Martin still have zero saves. For context, Alexander's first save of the season came during extra-innings, while his second came when Garcia and Martin were unavailable after pitching back-to-back days. Keep in mind Alexander is pitching for his fourth team over the last 3 seasons and the southpaw current sports his 12.0 K-BB percentage and 7.3 percent swinging-strike rate. Neither of those stats inspire much confidence for continued high-leverage opportunities. As for Junis, who is also pitching for his 4th team over the past 3 seasons, he's been the Rangers' best reliever thus far, racking up 7 scoreless innings with a 4:0 K:BB, 0.43 WHIP and team-leading 1.80 Game Leverage Index. That's enough to move him atop the hierarchy for saves, especially since he was called for a save chance in a game where Chris Martin was likely available (even though Garcia pitched two in a row). We're not counting Garcia out of the saves equation just yet. Meanwhile, Cole Winn currently ranks second on the team with a 1.51 gmLI. Don't count him out either.

Toronto Blue Jays
Team: Toronto Blue Jays
Total Saves: 13
Next in Line: Jeff Hoffman , Yimi Garcia 60-Day IL
(5/2) Jeff Hoffman has struck out 28 through 13.2 innings thus far, but the veteran right-hander's inconsistent performance - he has as many blown saves (3) as successful ones in 2026 - has dropped him into a setup role for the time being. Louis Varland has taken over closing duties, recording 4 straight for the Blue Jays (all during the past week-and-a-half). With a 0.53 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 28:5 K:BB through his first 17 innings, Varland figures to maintain some leash in the role as long as he's pitching well.

Washington Nationals
Team: Washington Nationals
Total Saves: 17
Closer: Committee
(5/8) Washington's new manager, Blake Butera, has his team playing surprisingly competitive baseball in the early stages of the 2026 campaign. Clayton Beeter (forearm) tallied 2 saves for the Nationals before he required a trip to the injured list for right forearm soreness. Gus Varland now leads Washington with 4 saves, and while his ratios are similar to Beeter's, he's been the much better pitcher with a 16:3 K:BB and 20.6 K-BB percentage through 14.2 innings. Over his last 11 appearances, he's posted a 1.69 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 11:1 K:BB over 10.2 innings. As such, his stability gets a boost, but it's tough to get excited about any Nationals reliever for fantasy purposes.

  1. 9/23:Tanner Rainey earned the save for the Nationals last night and has worked 3 out of the last 4 games. Expect Kyle Finnegan, who hasn't pitched since Sept. 19, to get the save chance if one presents itself against the Cardinals tonight.
