2026 Fantasy Outlook
Adam, a first-time All-Star in 2025, finished seventh with 29 holds while posting an ERA under 2.00 for the third time in the past four seasons. The 33-year-old tossed fewer four-seamers and sweepers in favor of more sliders (35 percent pitch usage) and changeups (33 percent), though his slider (.280 BA, .360 SLG, 40 percent whiff) wasn't as dominant as it was in 2024 (.105 BA, .211 SLG, 57.1 percent whiff). His strikeout rate also dipped to 25.9 percent, and while it was still above average (74th percentile per Statcast), it was his lowest mark since 2019. Adam underwent surgery in September to repair a torn left quad tendon and is expected to be ready to throw off a mound sometime during spring training. It appears a stint on the injured list is likely to begin 2026, though he might not miss much time. When healthy enough to return, Adam should slot right back into an important setup role for San Diego. Read Past Outlooks
Makes rehab appearance Saturday
Adam (quadriceps) tossed 1.1 scoreless innings in a rehab appearance with Triple-A El Paso on Saturday, allowing one hit without a walk or a strikeout.
Analysis
Saturday marked Adam's first outing in what will likely be a relatively short rehab stint. The veteran reliever retired the side in order in the fourth inning and returned for the fifth, giving up a single and then inducing a flyout prior to being pulled. Adam said Saturday that he'd like to be activated off the IL when first eligible April 6, per Matt Levine of SI.com. He's posted a sub-2.00 ERA in three of the past four regular seasons, so Adam should take on a high-leverage role for San Diego not long after he's back with the big-league club's bullpen.

Adam was excellent for the third consecutive season, posting top-15 marks among relief pitchers with a career-high 73.2 innings pitched (T-14th), a 1.95 ERA (T-13th), 0.86 WHIP (11th) and 31 holds (seventh). The 33-year-old right-hander was particularly sharp after he was traded mid-season to San Diego, with whom he's under team control through 2026. Adam has not featured a slider much throughout his career, but threw more than ever in 2024 with great success, generating a remarkably high 57 percent whiff rate; second only to Josh Hader for that pitch type. Adam should maintain his high leverage role with the Padres in 2025 and has a decent shot at regular save opportunities considering injuries have often plagued closer Robert Suarez in the past.

Trending in right direction
Adam, who's recovering from a quadriceps injury, is trending in the right direction in his recovery but still doesn't have a clear date to return, according to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Analysis
"Pitching-wise, we're...beyond on pace. It's just a matter of being cleared," Adam said. He also acknowledged that he hasn't been ruled out for Opening Day yet, so everything is up in the air for him. Adam has been one of the best relievers in baseball of late, and he's coming off an All-Star nod in 2025, when he posted a 1.93 ERA across 65 regular-season appearances. Recovering from left quadriceps tendon repair surgery, Adam has been throwing bullpens since early December.
