Robert Suarez

Robert Suarez

35-Year-Old PitcherRP
Atlanta Braves
2026 Fantasy Outlook
Suarez anchored the Padres with a National League leading 40 saves; good for second overall in 2025. The 34-year-old managed to stay healthy for the second consecutive campaign while establishing new career-highs in games played (70), innings pitched (69.2) and strikeouts (75). He remained fastball-heavy in his approach (60 percent usage) - not surprising when you average 98.6 mph on the pitch and it holds opposing hitters to a .169 batting average and .261 slugging percentage. Suarez's typically dominant changeup was far more hittable (.310 BAA) last season, which resulted in a few blow-up outings. However, the Venezuelan native was extremely reliable, going scoreless in 28 of his first 30 appearances before being named to his second straight All-Star team. Suarez had an $8M player option for 2026 and 2027, but entered the free-agent market and signed a 3-year, $45M deal with Atlanta. He'll serve as the team's top setup man for 2026 before likely taking over the closer role the following season. Read Past Outlooks

Picks up save Saturday

Suarez earned the save in Saturday's 3-1 win over the Phillies, striking out two in a perfect ninth inning
Analysis
With Raisel Iglesias unavailable after sleeping on his shoulder wrong, Suarez was called upon with a two-run lead in the ninth and slammed the door on 14 pitches. The 35-year-old has been stellar so far this season, posting a 1.04 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 10:1 K:BB across 8.2 innings. If Iglesias remains unavailable in the near term, Suarez would clearly be the top option for saves in the Atlanta bullpen.

This section compares his stats with all relief pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 30 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2025
2024
2023
2022
After spending two injury-marred seasons in a setup role, Suarez remained healthy and emerged as the Padres closer. The 33-year-old was outstanding, racking up nine wins (T-2nd among relievers), 36 saves (4th in the league) and an 81.8 percent team save share that was 6th-highest among closers. He was named NL Reliever of the Month for May and earned his first All-Star selection. Suarez wasn't sharp in the second half, but still finished with a respectable 2.77 ERA and 1.05 WHIP for the season. Perhaps most impressively, he signficantly improved his walk rate, cutting it by three percentage points. This may be attributed to a pitch mix change, as Suarez went fastball-heavy (71 percent usage) while completely abandoning his slider. The right-hander displayed improved velocity on his four-seamer, averaging 99.1 miles per hour on the pitch compared to 97.7 in 2023. As long as health persists for Suarez, he's the favorite to retain closing duties for San Diego in 2025.
After an impressive debut in the States in 2022, Suarez declined his $5 million player option last November and became a free agent. A few days later, the right-hander signed a five-year contract with the Padres, as the team clearly thought highly of him to pay him $10 million per season. Unfortunately, Suarez missed the entire first half of 2023 while recovering from severe elbow inflammation. The soon-to-be 33-year-old made his season debut right after the All-Star break and slid right back into setup duties. Suarez would only pitch 27.2 innings across 26 appearances, however, as he also missed 10 games for the alleged use of a foreign substance. Suarez wound up compiling four wins, nine holds and a 0.90 WHIP for San Diego last year and figures to have a leg up for closing duties in 2024.
After pitching in Japan for five seasons, Suarez underwent a bit of an adjustment period in his transition to MLB. The 31-year-old compiled a 4.66 ERA over his first month pitching in the States, but ultimately turned in a fantastic season overall. The rookie right-hander posted a 32% strikeout rate, 2.27 ERA (2.99 SIERA) and 1.05 WHIP across 47.2 innings but was limited to 45 appearances due to a knee injury that required a clean-up procedure in June. Suarez missed two months of action, but he was particularly sharp upon his return, striking out 32 over his final 24.1 innings. He did not allow an earned run at Petco Park all year and established himself as the primary setup man for the Padres. Suarez should maintain that role in 2023, but closing may be in his future after San Diego re-signed him to a five-year, $46 million deal. He'll need to cut down on his walks (11%) to take that next step.
Suarez has never pitched in the States, but he has already made a name for himself in professional baseball. He emerged as one of the top closers in Japan over the last two years. His 2021 season with the Hanshin Tigers was especially impressive, with Suarez posting a 1.16 ERA and 0.77 WHIP to go along with 42 saves. He barely averaged a strikeout per inning in five seasons in Japan, and that simple fact will lead many to doubt Suarez as he transitions to Major League Baseball. However, Suarez has big-league velocity, sitting in the high-90s and reaching triple digits, and he can pull the string on the changeup to get hitters out in front. It's a pitch arsenal that looks like it will play in the majors, and the Padres are betting on it, having signed Suarez to a one-year deal. Bullpen roles are up for grabs in San Diego under new manager Bob Melvin.

Mets, Blue Jays, Atlanta in pursuit
PFree Agent
December 10, 2025
The Mets, Blue Jays and Atlanta have been the "most aggressive" suitors for Suarez, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports.
Analysis
It's an interesting trio, given that all three clubs already have theoretical closers in place, though the Blue Jays have intimated they would be OK with shifting Jeff Hoffman to a setup role. Suarez -- who will turn 35 in March -- has collected 76 saves over the last two regular seasons, posting a 2.87 ERA and 134:32 K:BB over 134.2 innings along the way.
