2026 Fantasy Outlook
Leiter was non-tendered by the Yankees after the 2025 campaign after the right-hander posted a 4.84 ERA and 1.53 WHIP over 48.1 regular-season innings. However, the 34-year-old's 3.55 FIP and 54:17 K:BB were encouraging, which earned him a one-year, $3 million deal with the Athletics for 2026. Leiter's K-rate sunk to just 24.7 percent in 2025, but he's struck out 28.3 percent of the batters he's faced over the past four regular seasons and he could be in the mix for saves as part of an unsettled Athletics bullpen. Option for closer committee
Leiter could be a factor in the Athletics' closer committee to begin the season, Jason Burke of SI.com reports.
Analysis
The right-hander joined the A's on a one-year, $3 million contract in December after being non-tendered by the Yankees earlier in the offseason. Leiter had a 4.84 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 54:17 K:BB across 48.1 innings during the 2025 regular season, recording two saves and 16 holds in 59 appearances. Athletics manager Mark Kotsay utilized a heavy committee approach last year after the departure of closer Mason Miller at the trade deadline, and Leiter figures to be a part of that mix early in 2026 despite his underwhelming numbers last year. He's given up one run on three hits with four strikeouts and three walks through four outings in spring training.

Leiter had one of the most devastating splitters in the league in 2024, ranking second for that pitch type with a 56.5 percent whiff rate and .099 batting average allowed. The split-finger fueled the 33-year-old righty to a career-high 86 strikeouts in just 58 innings between the Cubs and Yankees. However, Leiter was not effective after the mid-season trade to New York, struggling to a 4.98 ERA and 1.71 WHIP with six home runs allowed over his final 21.2 frames. He's projected to take on a middle relief role for the Yankees in 2025.
