Rest-of-Season Projections
2026 Fantasy Outlook
Fairbanks finally managed to stay healthy for a full season, posting career-highs in games played (61) and innings (60.1) for Tampa Bay. The 32-year-old also established a new career-high with 27 saves for a 77.1 percent team save share that was seventh-highest among closers. However, for the second straight year, the right-hander's strikeout rate hovered around 24 percent; a steep drop from his career mark (30 percent) and prior outputs from the 2019 through 2023 campaigns. This, combined with Fairbanks' durability concerns, may have played into the Rays' decision to decline his $11 million option for 2026. However, Fairbanks was able to land an extra $2 million after hitting the open market, signing a one-year, $13 million contract with Miami. On average, the veteran has been the 15th closer off the board in early 2026 drafts. Read Past Outlooks
Slated for live BP on Sunday
Fairbanks (hand) is scheduled to throw live batting practice Sunday and will then travel with the Marlins for the team's road series in Minnesota, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
Analysis
Fairbanks landed on the IL on April 28 due to nerve irritation in his right hand, but he tossed two bullpen sessions this week and is now lined up to throw to hitters. The veteran reliever is eligible to be activated May 13, and it sounds like he could be back in action that day. Fairbanks will likely reclaim the team's closer role upon his return. Calvin Faucher and Tyler Phillips have notched one save apiece during Fairbanks' absence.

2020
When healthy during the 2024 season, Fairbanks racked up 23 of Tampa Bay's 33 saves for a 70 percent team save share that would have been a top-10 mark among closers. However, the right-hander expectedly missed time, requiring two trips to the injured list -- one for a nerve issue in his throwing arm and the other a season-ending lat strain in August. Unfortunately, Fairbanks' stability as the Rays closer remains capped due to persistent injury risk. He's missed an average of 65 games per season since 2021. In addition, he's a trade candidate due to his contract status. Fairbanks makes a reasonable $3.67 million in 2025, but has a $7 million team option in 2026 (or $1 million buyout) before he becomes a free-agent, thus making him a back-end CL2 option for 2025 drafts.

Could be dealing with nerve issue
Fairbanks described the issue that forced him out of Monday's 5-4 loss to the Dodgers as numbness in his pitching hand, a potential recurrence of the nerve issue that sidelined him in April 2024 during his time with the Rays, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. "Just a lot of diminished sensation," Fairbanks said after the game. "Felt like any movement of the wrist would exacerbate just loss of sensation in the index finger. So we'll see where it goes and how to work on it."

Isaac Azout of FishOnFirst.com reports that the Marlins remain interested in signing Fairbanks and have offered a one-year deal in the "mid-teens."
Analysis
Miami was previously reported to be priced out of the right-hander's market, but the organization apparently likes him enough to make him the highest paid player on the team, which is currently Sandy Alcantara at $11.2 million. Tampa Bay declined Fairbanks' $11 million club option for 2026 in November, and it appears he'll be able to net a higher figure in free agency.
