2026 Fantasy Outlook
Bednar got off to a rocky start in 2025, even spending a few weeks in the minors before returning in late-April to reclaim Pittsburgh's closer role. The two-time All-Star pitched much better upon his return to the majors, posting a remarkable 1.70 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 50:8 K:BB across 37 innings for the Pirates before he was traded to the Yankees on deadline day. Bednar was excellent for New York, recording 10 of the team's final 13 saves for a 77 percent save share over the final two months. The 31-year-old produced strikeouts with all three of his offerings in 2025, fanning 32 with his upper-90's fastball, 27 on his curve and another 27 on his splitter to establish a new career-high with 86 strikeouts overall. His 26.7 K-BB percentage ranked ninth among qualified relievers, while his 2.47 SIERA ranked tenth. Bednar has produced outstanding results in four of his last five seasons and deserves to be one of top five or six closers off the board in 2026 drafts. Read Past Outlooks
Registers second save
Bednar earned the save Saturday against the Giants, allowing no runs on one hit and one walk in one inning. He struck out one.
Analysis
It was Bednar's second save in as many outings to begin the new campaign. The right-hander wasn't at his sharpest Saturday, throwing just 12 of his 20 pitches for strikes, but he was able to induce a Patrick Bailey double play to seal the deal. Bednar tossed five scoreless appearances during Grapefruit League play, and he appears to be picking up right where he left off this spring.

What a difference one year makes. After recording 39 saves and making his second straight All-Star team in 2023, Bednar struggled to a 5.77 ERA and 1.42 WHIP last season. The right-hander had a rough start to the campaign, allowing 14 earned runs in his first 13 outings, nearly matching his full-season total the year prior. Perhaps he wasn't fully recovered from the lat injury he suffered during spring training, but Bednar eventually settled in, pitching lights out for about a month before succumbing to a strained left oblique in June. Bednar returned a few weeks later, but so did his struggles. By the end of August, Pittsburgh removed him from closing duties and he never regained the role, pitching in low-leverage scenarios for the rest of the season. Pirates GM Ben Cherington recently indicated Bednar could reclaim the closer role in 2025, especially if he looks more like his former self this spring. If health permits, he's a prime CL2 target with CL1 upside.

Analysis
Bednar would further bolster a bullpen that already includes Devin Williams and Luke Weaver, and he offers protection for 2026 in the event Williams and/or Weaver depart in free agency. The 30-year-old Bednar has one more year of arbitration eligibility remaining and has had a nice bounce-back 2025 campaign, posting a 2.37 ERA with 51 strikeouts over 38 innings.
