2025 Fantasy Outlook
Scott sustained the level of success he achieved in 2023, arguably turning in the finest season of his career thus far. The southpaw permitted just two earned runs from mid-April through the end of July, a span of 37 appearances and 38 innings (0.47 ERA) en route to NL Reliever of the Month honors for July and his first All-Star selection. Between Miami and San Diego, Scott established a new career-high with 22 saves. He added 11 holds and was only one win shy of double-digts, only boosting his fantasy value. Strikeouts dipped from 33.9 percent in 2023 to 28.6 percent, while his walk rate regressed to 12.2 percent, but both metrics were in line with his career averages. Scott's success can be attributed to inducing weak contact, as his 84.3 mph average exit velocity was a 100th percentile Statcast metric alongside his 27.5 percent hard-hit rate (99th percentile). The 30-year-old has yet to sign with a team, but will likely compete for closing duties wherever he lands. Read Past Outlooks

PSan Diego Padres
September 22, 2024
Scott picked up the save in a win over the White Sox on Saturday, allowing one hit and one walk over a scoreless 1.2 innings while striking out three.
ANALYSIS
Scott took the mound in the eighth inning with the bases loaded and one out. He got Dominic Fletcher to ground into a double play to end the threat, then returned for the top of the ninth with a four-run lead. In that frame, Scott got the first two batters to go down on strikes before allowing a single to Chuckie Robinson and then a walk to Miguel Vargas. However, the right-handed reliever managed to get the last batter to go down swinging for the final out, notching his 22nd save of the campaign and only his second this month. It also marked Scott's fourth outing this season in which he posted at least three strikeouts, and he now carries a robust 17:5 K:BB in September. Robert Suarez remains San Diego's preferred recipient of save opportunities, but manager Mike Shildt didn't deploy him Saturday after the right-hander blew a save and threw 27 pitches Friday.

How does Tanner Scott compare to other relievers?
This section compares his stats with all relief pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 30 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

2019
Scott finally put all the pieces together in 2023. The southpaw established career-highs across multiple categories, including 74 games played (2nd in the NL), 78.0 innings (6th among relievers), 9 wins (T-3rd) and 104 strikeouts (3rd). Perhaps most notably, he significantly improved his control, cutting his walk rate (7.8%) in half while producing a career-best 0.99 WHIP. He went from having a bottom five WHIP among relief pitchers in 2022, to 14th in the category. Scott's strikeout upside was already elite, but he improved with a personal best 33.9% K% and 17.8% SwStr%. His 26.1% K-BB% with 5th-highest among qualified relievers, while his 4.90 WPA was the highest. He also recorded double-digit saves (12) for the 2nd straight year. The biggest question mark is whether or not Scott can sustain this level of success? Strikeouts are a lock, but will the ratios plummet? It's a risk that might be worth taking, even with Scott yielding a much higher ADP in 2024 drafts.
Scott was traded to Miami a few days before Opening Day and it didn't take long for him to emerge as the Marlins' top lefty. He struck out 90 over 62.2 innings for a 31.1% strikeout rate that was 25th among relief pitchers. However, Scott still had trouble locating his slider and 97 mph fastball. His 15.9% walk rate was worst among qualified relievers, while his 1.61 WHIP was bottom five for the category. Despite these persistent issues, Scott managed to record a career-high 20 saves for the Marlins, serving as the team's closer for a three-month stretch during the summer. Dylan Floro took over for the final month, though, and seems like the logical favorite to close to begin 2023. Scott may still get the occasional chance, but he continues to allow far too many baserunners to get another extended look as closer -- unless new manager, Skip Schumaker, values his strikeouts above all else.
Scott had lackluster results in each of his first three years in the majors, but he was much more effective in 2020, posting a 1.31 ERA and 1.06 WHIP over 25 relief appearances. His 3.97 xFIP was more on par with his mark from 2019, but the southpaw still has a solid 96.5 mph average fastball velocity, and he posted a 26.7 K% in 2020. Much of his success last year stemmed from his ability to limit meaningful contact. After allowing a 43.8% hard-hit rate in 2019, that mark fell to 22.0% last year, along with a 4.0% barrel rate. Despite his success, Scott has struggled with command, recording a walk rate above 11.6% in each of his first four seasons in the majors. His improvement in limiting meaningful contact makes him a strong contender to earn save chances for Baltimore, but the Orioles tend to use a closer-by-committee approach and only recorded 11 saves as a team during the 60-game season in 2020.
Scott made 53 appearances out of the bullpen for the struggling Orioles last season, finishing with an unimpressive 5.40 ERA. His underlying numbers suggest that there's a decent reliever there, however. The young lefty's strong 31.7% strikeout rate mostly offset a fairly poor 11.7% walk rate, leading to a 3.40 FIP. The high-strikeout, high-walk profile is in line with Scott's minor-league numbers as well as his prospect reports. With a fastball that averaged 97.4 mph and a slider that sat at 89.0 mph, the whiffs are certainly no surprise. Like many young relievers, he shows high-leverage potential if he can just get the walks under control, though command and control can take years to develop for pitchers with such electric stuff, if it ever develops at all. Scott is a name worth knowing should the closer job in Baltimore become up for grabs.
