Est. Return 4/6/2026
2026 Fantasy Outlook
Joyce experienced diminished velocity at the onset of 2025 and was subsequently placed on the injured list due to right shoulder inflammation. His recovery from the injury was slow with the 24-year-old even pausing his throwing program due to continued discomfort. It turns out Joyce needed season-ending surgery to repair his labrum, which he underwent last May. It's unclear where the hard-throwing righty is currently at in his throwing program, but he's currently one of the top in-house candidates to close for the Angels in 2026. This, of course, assumes he's back to full health and he returns to pre-injury form. Los Angeles could also sign or trade for a more established closer in the interim. These are all big "ifs", making Joyce difficult to count on for fantasy purposes in 2026. Read Past Outlooks

Analysis
Joyce is still on the mend from a shoulder procedure he underwent last May, so the Halos will stash him on the injured list to begin the regular season. The 25-year-old never made an appearance in the Cactus League but has been throwing off a mound, so he may not need much more than a minimum-length IL stint before he returns to the Angels bullpen.

Stat Review
How does Ben Joyce compare to other relievers?
This section compares his stats with all relief pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 30 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB
    Strikeout to walk ratio.
  • K/9
    Average strikeouts per nine innings.
  • BB/9
    Average walks per nine innings.
  • HR/9
Average home runs allowed per nine innings.
  • Fastball
    Average fastball velocity.
  • ERA
Earned run average. The average earned runs allowed per nine innings.
  • WHIP
Walks plus hits per inning pitched.
  • BABIP
Batting average on balls in play. Measures how many balls in play against a pitcher go for hits.
  • GB/FB
Groundball to flyball ratio. The higher the number, the more likely a pitcher is to induce groundballs.
  • Left On Base
The percentage of base runners that a pitcher strands on base over the course of a season.
  • Exit Velocity
The speed of the baseball as it comes off the bat, immediately after a batter makes contact.
  • Barrels/BBE
The percentage of batted ball events resulting in a Barrel. A Barrel is a batted ball with similar exit velocity and launch angle to past ones that led to a minimum .500 batting average and 1.500 slugging percentage.
  • Spin Rate
Spin Rate is the rate of spin on a baseball after it is released. It is measured in revolutions per minute (rpm).
  • Balls Hit 95+ MPH
The percentage of batted balls hit that met or exceeded the 95 MPH threshold.
  • Swinging Strike
The percentage of pitches that result in a swing and a miss.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2025
2024
2023
Joyce was rusty during spring training, walking nine over 7.1 innings before he was optioned to the minors. He spent several months in Triple-A, but was recalled by Los Angeles in June and deployed in high-leverage immediately. He produced a respectable 2.08 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 33:14 K:BB over 34.2 innings and clocked the fastest pitch in the majors last season at 105.5 miles per hour. Joyce even spent time as the Angels' closer after they traded their veteran relievers at the deadline. He collected four saves in just over one month before a shoulder injury ended his season prematurely. Joyce appeared set to enter 2025 as the Angels' primary closer, but Kenley Jansen is poised to fill that job after signing a one-year contract. Joyce should see occasional save opportunities but is likely to work as the primary setup man if Jansen can remain healthy.
Joyce's velocity is no secret, but he struggled to control his triple-digit fastball last season. He walked 14 over 15.2 innings at Double-A before the Angels fast-tracked him to the majors with a call up in late May. The 23-year-old logged five appearances with Los Angeles and topped out at 103 mph on the radar gun before experienicing ulnar neuritis in his right elbow. A trip to the injured list was necessary and Joyce missed three months of action. The 6-foot-5 right-hander returned in September to appear in seven more contests, finishing the season with a 5.40 ERA, 1.80 WHIP and 10:9 K:BB over 10 innings. He also tacked on one win and four holds with his first taste of big-league, high-leverage action. Joyce has the makings of a future closer and could hold some fantasy value even if he's not getting save chances due to his potential to rack up strikeouts. However, if his control issues persist, he may have trouble ascending the Angels' leverage ladder in 2024.
Joyce was a third-round pick by the Angels out of Tennessee, and the right-hander is renowned for a fastball that has been clocked as high as 105 mph. The 22-year-old made 13 appearances for Double-A Rocket City after being drafted, and he recorded a 20:4 K:BB with a 2.08 ERA over 13 innings. Joyce isn't likely to make the Angels out of spring training, but his electric stuff gives him a chance to help before 2023 ends, and he just might be the closer of the future in Los Angeles.
