2026 Fantasy Outlook
Romero appeared to be the Cardinals' closer after the team traded Ryan Helsley at the 2025 deadline - he secured seven of the team's next 11 saves (64 percent) after the trade - but the southpaw ceded closing duties to Riley O'Brien to close out September. Romero is a solid high-leverage arm who generally performs well against left-handed batters (.180 BA since 2023), but he doesn't fit the typical closer profile. He struck out just 21.6 percent of the batters he faced in 2025, while issuing far too many free passes (29 across 61 innings). His 10.2 K-BB percentage ranked 126th out of 147 qualified relievers last season, while his -1.21 ERA (2.07) minus FIP (3.28) was one of the largest discrepancies. Romero could receive some save chances for St. Louis to open 2026, but don't bet on him leading the team in the saves category by the end of the season. Read Past Outlooks
Blows second save
Romero was charged with a blown save after allowing a hit and striking out one over one inning during a 2-1 loss to Milwaukee on Wednesday. He allowed two inherited runners to score.
Analysis
Starter Dustin May fired seven no-hit frames before giving up two hits to open the eighth, and Romero was called upon to escape the jam. The left-hander nearly did so unscathed, inducing a fielder's choice grounder and recording strikeout before a single and an error brought home two runs for Milwaukee. Despite the blown save, Romero has been cruising through his last 10 appearances, tallying six holds and allowing just one earned run while striking out 12 through 10.2 innings.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2025
2024
2021
Romero landed on the 15-day injured list during the final week of the regular season due to left forearm inflammation. As long as he can avoid setbacks, it would appear he is in line for his normal offseason routine. The 28-year-old southpaw is coming off his finest campaign to date, establishing new career-highs in games played (65), innings pitched (59) and wins (7). He was eighth in the league with 30 holds while posting solid ratios as the top lefty out of the Cardinals bullpen. Romero figures to reprise that same role in 2025 and could even earn save opportunities if St. Louis trades closer Ryan Helsley. However, looking under the hood, there isn't much in Romero's profile that is terribly exciting.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Name to watch before deadline?
Romero could be a name to watch as the trade deadline approaches in July and the first days of August, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports.
Analysis
The Cardinals have enjoyed a decent start to the season and will begin Tuesday's three-game series with the Pirates at 27-19. However, they're expected to regress at some point, and if that's the case, some of their established players might be available via trade before the Aug. 3 deadline. Romero should generate plenty of interest in the trade market as a reliable bullpen arm. Through 22.1 innings this season, Romero owns a 3.22 ERA with a 1.21 WHIP while fanning 19 and walking nine.
