2026 Fantasy Outlook
No Diamondbacks hurler has made more appearances over the last two seasons than Thompson and his 115 outings. He got off to a rotten start in 2025 with a 7.50 ERA over his first 19 appearances, but over his last 29 trips to the bump, Thompson yielded only three earned runs over 23.1 innings, collecting 12 holds along the way. He did miss time with a shoulder injury during the latter stretch, but the sidearmer finished the year healthy. Thompson is probably the most reliable out of a collection of underwhelming bullpen arms in Arizona, and that alone could put him in the mix for saves. It's an atypical profile for a late-inning reliever, though, as Thompson averaged less than 90 mph with his sinker in 2025 and has just a 19.2 percent strikeout rate over the last three seasons. Among frontrunners to close
Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo mentioned Thompson, Kevin Ginkel and Paul Sewald when asked who could fill the team's closer job, Alex D'Agostino of SI.com reports.
Analysis
"I mean it's probably simple arithmetic for you guys to figure out," Lovullo said. "I'm just going to go kind of blind here, but Sewald, Ginkel, Thompson, all those guys that have had that experience in big moments... they're all wanting to do it." D'Agostino writes that while Sewald, Ginkel and Thompson are the "likely frontrunners" for the gig, Lovullo was "emphatic that no roles will be handed to anyone." A.J. Puk (elbow) should also be in the mix to close when he returns around midseason, and Justin Martinez (elbow) will be a candidate if he makes it back late in the year. Lovullo noted that he prefers to have a defined closer, though it's unclear whether he plans to name one before Opening Day. Thompson has notched a total of four saves in his two-and-a-half regular seasons in Arizona, collecting a 3.21 ERA and 97:29 K:BB over 120.2 innings.

2025 Fantasy Outlook
Thompson was a dependable bullpen arm for Arizona in 2024, finishing with career-best marks across multiple categories, including games played (67), innings pitched (66.1), strikeouts (52) and wins (7). The submariner also racked up 24 holds which led the D'Backs and was good for 13th overall in the majors. What Thompson lacks in strikeouts, he makes up for with a 99th percentile groundball rate (62.7 percent) and low walk rate (5.5 percent). The 32-year-old should slot into a setup role once again for 2025.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Could open 2026 as closer
Thompson was mentioned by manager Torey Lovullo as one of the candidates to open the 2026 season as the Diamondbacks' closer, according to Alex D'Agostino of SI.com.
Analysis
Lovullo wants to open the 2026 season with a closer in place, and Thompson is among the candidates to win the job alongside Kevin Ginkel and Paul Sewald. For what it's worth, the Diamondbacks have A.J. Puk and Justin Martinez out due to elbow injuries, and both should be in the mix for closing opportunities once they return. Thompson has notched a total of four saves in his two-and-a-half regular seasons in Arizona. He posted a 3.92 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP across 41.1 regular-season appearances in 2025.
