2025 Fantasy Outlook
Control continues to be a major issue for Chapman, who issued 39 free passes over 61.2 innings with the Pirates in 2024. His 14.7 percent walk rate was the worst among qualified relievers, but he still posted an impressive 22.3 K-BB percentage that was a top-25 mark. The veteran southpaw averaged 99.8 miles per hour on his sinker, inducing a 32 percent whiff rate that is consistently near the top of the leaderboard for that pitch type. He struck out 98 batters and racked up 14 saves, proving he can still get the job done in the ninth inning. Chapman, who will turn 37 years old in February, signed a one-year, $10.75 million deal with Boston. He'll be a candidate to close for the Red Sox alongside Liam Hendriks and Justin Slaten. Opening season as closer
Manager Alex Cora said Tuesday that Chapman will begin the season as the Red Sox's closer but could see occasional high-leverage work in an earlier inning if the matchup is right, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Browne used the example of Corey Seager leading off the eighth inning as a situation when Chapman may enter before the ninth, but the veteran left-hander should still see the bulk of the save chances early on for Boston. Liam Hendriks, Justin Slaten and Garrett Whitlock seem likely to begin the season as the next men up for saves in said situations, or when Chapman is unavailable.

Chapman finished with 100-plus strikeouts for the fifth time in his career, but for the first time since 2015. The veteran showcased increased velocity early in the season, hitting 103.8 mph on the radar gun with his devastating sinker (101.1 mph average) that yielded a 43.3% whiff rate, the league's highest mark for that pitch type. Walks were still an issue, but Chapman still had the third-highest K-BB percentage among qualified relievers at 26.9%. Ultimately, the southpaw proved he was effective enough during his age-35 season to maintain a high-leverage role for both Kansas City and Texas. Chapman only had six saves last year, and it seems unlikely that he will take away closing duties from David Bednar after signing a one-year deal with the Pirates in January. The Cuban Missile can still be an asset in leagues scoring holds, NL-only formats and even deep mixed leagues for his ratios and strikeouts.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Close to deal with Boston
The Red Sox have made progress in contract talks with Chapman and are close to signing him, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
There's no word yet on the potential terms of the contract. Chapman will turn 37 in February but is still one of the hardest throwers in the game and struck out 98 over 61.2 innings with the Pirates in 2024. He would be a candidate to step in as the closer in Boston, taking over for free agent Kenley Jansen.
