2026 Fantasy Outlook
After finishing third in the league with 38 saves in 2024, Finnegan was non-tendered by the Nationals last offseason so that the team could avoid giving him a raise in salary arbitration. However, the market for the right-hander was dry and he re-upped with Washington on a one-year deal for less money. Finnegan once again dominated the team save share to open 2025, recording 20 of the Nats' first 21 saves before he was traded to Detroit at the deadline. He picked up four more saves down the stretch for the Tigers, finishing with 24 overall between the two clubs. While Finnegan has finished among the top 15 in saves for three straight years, the 34-year-old missed time late last season due to an adductor strain and lost a tick of velocity on his four-seam fastball. Finnegan returned to the Tigers in free agency, signing a two-year, $19 million deal in December, and he will likely work in tandem with Will Vest to set up for closer Kenley Jansen to begin 2026. Continues scoreless start
After tossing a scoreless inning of relief in Friday's 1-0, 10-inning loss to the Red Sox, Finnegan is now up to nine consecutive scoreless appearances this season.
Analysis
Finnegan has managed to keep the opposition off the board so far this year, but there are some signs for concern. He only has three strikeouts across nine innings and has walked eight batters, which has contributed to a 1.33 WHIP that is a jump up from the 1.11 WHIP he posted for the Nationals and Tigers last year. Finnegan should remain locked into a key setup role for Detroit, though he'll need to flip the strikeouts and walks around if he wants to sustain his early success.

Even though his metrics weren't eye-popping, Finnegan maintained higher stability than expected as the Nationals' closer, racking up a career-high 38 saves (third in the league) with a 95 percent team save share that was highest among closers. Somehow, the right-hander just kept getting the job done in the ninth inning despite giving up a ton of hard contact -- his 91.3 mph average exit velocity was a bottom-one percent of MLB -- and allowing plenty of traffic on the bases. His 1.34 WHIP ranked 18th out of the 20 closers who recorded 20-plus saves. Finnegan is coming off his first All-Star selection, but he's currently a free agent after Washington non-tendered him. He should draw plenty of interest due to his high-leverage experience, but closing is no guarantee.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Mutual interest in Detroit reunion
The Tigers and Finnegan have mutual interest in a reunion, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis
The Tigers had Finnegan up his splitter usage after they acquired him at the trade deadline and he thrived for them down the stretch, holding a 1.50 ERA and 23:4 K:BB over 18 regular-season innings while notching four saves. Finnegan shared the closer role with Will Vest during his time in Detroit, and it could be a similar setup in 2026 if he winds up re-signing with the Tigers.
