2026 Fantasy Outlook
The Padres once again made the biggest splash on the relief market at the 2025 trade deadline, acquiring Miller from the Athletics. The 27-year-old brought closing experience with him to San Diego, but he recorded only two of the team's 13 saves over the final two months of the season with Robert Suarez anchoring the club in that role. With Suarez recently opting out of his contract to become a free-agent, Miller is the natural choice to slide into San Diego's closer role. However, the Padres aren't ruling out giving him an opportunity to start, particularly if they lose both Dylan Cease and Michael King in free agency. Miller has been a full-time reliever the last two seasons and has been arguably the best bullpen arm in the game during that span, collecting a 2.56 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and 43.1 percent strikeout rate over 126.2 innings. Last year, his slider limited opposing hitters to a league-best .108 BAA and 54.6 percent whiff rate for that pitch type. Read Past Outlooks
Converts 11th save
Miller allowed a hit and struck out three without walking a batter over a scoreless inning to earn the save in Sunday's 4-3 win over the White Sox.
Analysis
This was Miller's first save in eight days, as his last two outings came in non-save situations. He hasn't been rattled by the end of his 34.2-inning scoreless streak, which dated back to the 2025 campaign prior to its end Monday against the Cubs. He's tossed a pair of scoreless outings since then and remains dialed in as the Padres' closer. Miller has a 1.10 ERA, 0.61 WHIP and 32:3 K:BB over 16.1 innings this season, and he's converted all 11 of his save opportunities.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2025
2024
2023
Miller made six starts in 2023, but durability issues raised questions about his role entering the 2024 campaign. However, an outstanding spring of one-inning appearances carved a logical path for the 25-year-old to become the Athletics closer. The right-hander tallied the A's first save of the season and never looked back, averaging 100.9 mph on his 4-seamer while blowing away opposing hitters at a league-leading 41.8 percent clip. Miller also led qualified relievers with a remarkable 33.3 K-BB percentage. Perhaps most importantly, the hurler remained healthy for the most part, only missing a few weeks on the IL with a fractured pinkie on his non-throwing hand. The injury risk remains, but Athletics general manager David Forst recently indicated that the team is not considering moving Miller back into a starting role. His upside warrants a pick as a top-7 closer for 2025 drafts.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Trade talks didn't progress
The Mets wanted to acquire Miller from the Padres via trade but talks between both clubs "went nowhere," according to Jon Heyman of The New York Post.
Analysis
That outcome shouldn't be a surprise, as the Padres paid a steep price to acquire Miller from the Athletics only a few months ago. Even though the Padres have been fielding trade offers for Miller and other star relievers, he's not likely to leave San Diego via trade any time soon. Miller had an impressive finish to the 2025 campaign after being traded to San Diego with a 0.77 ERA and 45 strikeouts across 23.1 regular-season innings.
