Phil Maton

33-Year-Old PitcherRP
Chicago Cubs
2026 Fantasy Outlook
Maton continues to boast one of the best curveballs in the league - his 41.6 percent whiff rate on the pitch ranked 12th among those who threw a minimum of 300 curves, while his .136 BA and .227 SLG were top-10 marks for that pitch type. Between the Cardinals and Rangers, the 32-year-old finished the 2025 regular season with a 2.79 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 81:23 K:BB across 61.1 innings. According to Statcast, he ranked in the 98th percentile or better across multiple categories, including hard-hit (30.7 percent) and barrel (3.6 percent) percentage allowed, average exit velocity allowed (84.8 mph) and whiff rate (36.2 percent). Maton recently signed a two-year deal with the Cubs, where he'll continue pitching in high-leverage and might even be in the mix for saves alongside Daniel Palencia. Read Past Outlooks

Maton allowed two runs on three hits across an inning of relief in Wednesday's 4-1 loss to Atlanta. He struck out one.
Analysis
Maton entered the contest having rattled off five straight scoreless appearances, but that came to an end with a subpar outing against a tough Atlanta lineup. After posting an ugly 14.40 ERA through his first six appearances of the year, the veteran righty has rebounded to drop his ERA to 8.44, as he appears to be trending in the right direction.

Stat Review
How does Phil Maton compare to other relievers?
This section compares his stats with all relief pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 30 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB
    Strikeout to walk ratio.
  • K/9
    Average strikeouts per nine innings.
  • BB/9
    Average walks per nine innings.
  • HR/9
Average home runs allowed per nine innings.
  • Fastball
    Average fastball velocity.
  • ERA
Earned run average. The average earned runs allowed per nine innings.
  • WHIP
Walks plus hits per inning pitched.
  • BABIP
Batting average on balls in play. Measures how many balls in play against a pitcher go for hits.
  • GB/FB
Groundball to flyball ratio. The higher the number, the more likely a pitcher is to induce groundballs.
  • Left On Base
The percentage of base runners that a pitcher strands on base over the course of a season.
  • Exit Velocity
The speed of the baseball as it comes off the bat, immediately after a batter makes contact.
  • Barrels/BBE
The percentage of batted ball events resulting in a Barrel. A Barrel is a batted ball with similar exit velocity and launch angle to past ones that led to a minimum .500 batting average and 1.500 slugging percentage.
  • Spin Rate
Spin Rate is the rate of spin on a baseball after it is released. It is measured in revolutions per minute (rpm).
  • Balls Hit 95+ MPH

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2021
2019
2018
The 2023 campaign was Maton's best season to date as the right-hander posted an impressive 3.00 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 74:25 K:BB over 66 innings with Houston. His standout season earned him a nice raise, as the veteran reliever signed a one-year, $6.25 million deal with Tampa Bay. While Maton is unlikely to see many save chances with the Rays, his impressive strikeout rate should keep him in their high-leverage mix. Maton doesn't throw hard - his fastball averages just 89 mph - but his curveball has been outstanding and even became his primary offering (40.4 percent pitch usage in 2023). The 30-year-old can be prone to the long ball (1.1 HR/9 for his career), but Maton is talented enough to draw consideration as a late round pick in AL-only and 50-round draft-and-hold formats.
Cleveland acquired Maton's services from San Diego in July of 2019 in exchange for international bonus pool allotments. His 2020 season appears underwhelming at a glance, but below the surface Maton looks like a potential stud reliever in the making. The right-hander struck out exactly one-third of the 96 batters he faced, with his four-seamer, cutter and curveball all registering whiff rates north of 32%, per Statcast. While they should not be taken as gospel, the estimators all agree Maton deserved an ERA of 3.00 or lower. His velocity is not overpowering, but regardless Maton gets enough strikeouts to profile as a late-inning arm for Cleveland. James Karinchak looks like a shoo-in at closer. If that does not work out for whatever reason, Maton may even be considered for the ninth.
Outside of a 5.5-week stretch on the disabled list with a lat strain, Maton spent most of last season in the big leagues, tossing 47.1 innings with a 4.37 ERA. He struck batters out at a 25.7% clip, but his walk rate was high at 10.8%. Maton benefited from good luck in some areas (5.6% HR/FB) while being hit with bad luck in others (.359 BABIP). Taken altogether, he looks to be a capable but not particularly fantasy-relevant middle reliever. His fastball is notable for having a very high spin rate, but it averaged just 91.8 mph and has been squared up easily enough in his first two major-league seasons. Maton has already exceeded expectations for a 597th overall pick, but the Padres now have a large number of more interesting bullpen arms who popped up last season, so the odds of him ending up in a high-leverage role this season are low.
Through Maton's first 10 appearances out of the Padres' bullpen, he looked the part of a future high-leverage arm. His high-spin 93-mph heater carried him to 11 strikeouts, zero walks and zero runs allowed over 8.1 innings. Then he came crashing back to earth, allowing six runs on two home runs over his next four appearances. He was up and down over the rest of the season, continuing to miss bats at a solid clip while giving up too many home runs. His control is adequate, but his command in the zone was what got him into trouble. Maton's slider isn't a wipeout pitch, but when he is locating his fastball, he can look filthy. The Padres will continue to groom him for a late-inning role, with Brad Hand, who is under control for two more years, taking the saves over the first half of the season. San Diego will look to shop Hand again at the deadline, and if they find a suitor, it could be Maton or Kirby Yates in the ninth inning the rest of the way.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Rangers in pursuit
PSt. Louis Cardinals
July 31, 2025
According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Rangers are attempting to acquire Maton from the Cardinals in the final minutes before Thursday's trade deadline.
Analysis
Texas has already significantly bolstered its pitching staff Thursday by trading for Merrill Kelly and Danny Coulombe, and the club is still looking to add a bit more. Maton has recorded two saves and 20 holds with a 2.35 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 48:15 K:BB across 38.1 innings this season. He joined St. Louis on a one-year, $2 million contract in March, and there's no reason for the organization to hold onto his expiring contract for the rest of the season.
