2026 Fantasy Outlook
Maton continues to boast one of the best curveballs in the league - his 41.6 percent whiff rate on the pitch ranked 12th among those who threw a minimum of 300 curves, while his .136 BA and .227 SLG were top-10 marks for that pitch type. Between the Cardinals and Rangers, the 32-year-old finished the 2025 regular season with a 2.79 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 81:23 K:BB across 61.1 innings. According to Statcast, he ranked in the 98th percentile or better across multiple categories, including hard-hit (30.7 percent) and barrel (3.6 percent) percentage allowed, average exit velocity allowed (84.8 mph) and whiff rate (36.2 percent). Maton recently signed a two-year deal with the Cubs, where he'll continue pitching in high-leverage and might even be in the mix for saves alongside Daniel Palencia. Read Past Outlooks
Takes first loss Tuesday
Maton (0-1) allowed two runs on two hits while retiring two batters in relief to take the loss Tuesday against the Angels. He walked two and struck out one.
Analysis
Maton struggled in the sixth inning and ended up taking his first loss with his new team in a 2-0 defeat. The veteran righty looked much sharper across two scoreless appearances to start the season, and after he posted a 2.79 ERA in 61.1 innings for the Cardinals and Rangers last year, there's no reason to believe this will be anything more than a blip on the radar. Maton should continue to serve as a key setup option in front of closer Daniel Palencia.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2021
2019
2018
The 2023 campaign was Maton's best season to date as the right-hander posted an impressive 3.00 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 74:25 K:BB over 66 innings with Houston. His standout season earned him a nice raise, as the veteran reliever signed a one-year, $6.25 million deal with Tampa Bay. While Maton is unlikely to see many save chances with the Rays, his impressive strikeout rate should keep him in their high-leverage mix. Maton doesn't throw hard - his fastball averages just 89 mph - but his curveball has been outstanding and even became his primary offering (40.4 percent pitch usage in 2023). The 30-year-old can be prone to the long ball (1.1 HR/9 for his career), but Maton is talented enough to draw consideration as a late round pick in AL-only and 50-round draft-and-hold formats.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Rangers in pursuit
According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Rangers are attempting to acquire Maton from the Cardinals in the final minutes before Thursday's trade deadline.
Analysis
Texas has already significantly bolstered its pitching staff Thursday by trading for Merrill Kelly and Danny Coulombe, and the club is still looking to add a bit more. Maton has recorded two saves and 20 holds with a 2.35 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 48:15 K:BB across 38.1 innings this season. He joined St. Louis on a one-year, $2 million contract in March, and there's no reason for the organization to hold onto his expiring contract for the rest of the season.
