2026 Fantasy Outlook
Abreu was one of five relief pitchers to record 100-plus strikeouts in 2025, finishing second overall with 105. It was the third straight year he reached the century mark in the category - the longest streak among relievers. The right-hander's 35.5 percent strikeout rate was a top-five mark for his cohort, while his 18.3 swinging strike percentage was a career-best, ranking fourth among relievers with at least 50 innings pitched. In fact, Abreu posted a top-seven whiff percentage, or better, for both his four-seam fastball and slider. The Dominican native was again on pace to finish among the league-leaders in the holds category until an injury to Josh Hader (shoulder) cleared Abreu's pathway to saves. Abreu recorded seven of the Astros' final 11 saves, even powering through a rough patch during his time as Houston's closer. If Hader is unavailable for Opening Day 2026, Abreu will certainly keep the closer chair in Houston warm until he's ready. Read Past Outlooks
Serves up walk-off homer Sunday
Abreu (0-1) took the loss Sunday against the Athletics, allowing three runs (two earned) on two hits and one walk across one-third of an inning.
Analysis
Abreu came on in the bottom of the ninth with the game tied 9-9 and was able to get the final out to send it to the 10th inning. Houston scored one in the top half of the inning, and Abreu stayed on to try to close out his own win. He walked Tyler Soderstrom before allowing a three-run, walk-off homer to Brent Rooker. Abreu has allowed at least one run in all four of his appearances to open the season and now owns a hideous 23.63 ERA and 6:5 K:BB across 2.2 innings. He's already served up three home runs after allowing four all of last season. With Josh Hader (biceps) still on the injured list, Abreu appears to still be the favorite for saves in Houston, but his hold on the job has got to be loosening after four rough outings.

2020
Abreu led the league with a career-high 38 holds in 2024 and was one of five relief pitchers with 100-plus strikeouts on his ledger. The 27-year-old righty slightly improved his walk rate (9.8 percent), but lost some zip on his four-seam fastball, averaging 96.8 mph on the pitch compared to 97.6 mph the year prior. This was still well above average (88th percentile), but he generated fewer whiffs (28.3 percent) with the fastball while allowing seven home runs and a .500 SLG. Abreu only has nine career saves, but certainly has the skillset of a closer and would step into the role seamlessly for Houston if Josh Hader got hurt. For now, he's an elite setup man who still offers some fantasy value - especially in deeper formats - for those seeking strikeouts, holds or ratio support.

Analysis
Abreu is slated to become a free agent after the 2026 season, but the Astros have yet to open extension talks with the reliever.
