2026 Fantasy Outlook
Varland excelled in his transition to a full-time relief role in 2025, posting a respectable 2.97 ERA (3.15 FIP), 1.20 WHIP and 75:22 K:BB over 72.2 regular-season innings between the Blue Jays and Twins. Pitching in shorter stints, the right-hander added velocity on his four-seamer - he threw it 98.1 mph on average - and added more knuckle curves, tossing it 38 percent of the time. Varland still threw the occasional slider, sinker and changeup, but he relied heavily on his two primary offerings. His curve, in particular, induced more whiffs and ground balls whenever opposing hitters did make contact. Varland established new career-highs with a 13.5 percent swinging strike rate, 25.3 percent K-rate and 52.6 ground ball percentage. Given the 28-year-old has a career 5.18 ERA over 23 starts at the major-league level, it does not appear the Blue Jays have interest in giving Varland another chance to start anytime soon. He's slated to begin the 2026 campaign in a setup role. Read Past Outlooks
Serves up game-winning homer
Varland (3-2) took the loss Saturday, giving up two runs on two hits in the ninth inning as the Blue Jays fell 3-1 to the Yankees. He struck out one.
Analysis
Brought in for the top of the ninth inning in a 1-1 tie, Varland couldn't get the game to extras as Cody Bellinger led off the frame with a single before Paul Goldschmidt hooked a game-winning two-run homer to left field. It was the first long ball Varland has served up all year, and one stumble isn't going to cost him his spot as Toronto's closer. On the season, the right-hander sports a 0.96 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 49:10 K:BB through 37.2 innings, and he's a perfect 12-for-12 in converting save chances.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2025
2024
2023
Varland's future role and status as a major league pitcher are in question after he took a big step backward lats season. Varland ended the 2023 season as a weapon out of the bullpen posting a 1.50 ERA in 12 innings with a 17:1 K:BB ratio and a fastball that touched triple digits. The Twins debated whether to keep him in the major league bullpen in the spring, but decided to return him back to the rotation at Triple-A. He wasn't impressive at Triple-A with a 4.75 ERA but he may have been unlucky with a .357 BABIP as he had a 10.4 K/9 and 3.76 xFIP. When he was finally called up to the major league rotation, Varland struggled with home runs. He gave up an astounding 12 homers in 49.2 innings. After seven starts (6.40 ERA) he was moved to the bullpen where he continued to flounder. Despite his troubles, Varland was likely unlucky with a meteoric 21.1 HR/FB rate and .357 BABIP. He still had a strong 96.1 average mph fastball. He could stick in the bullpen next season and will compete for a major league role in the spring.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Long-time interest from Toronto
According to Keegan Matheson of MLB.com, GM Ross Atkins said last week that the Blue Jays had been interested in acquiring Varland from the Twins for at least two years.
Analysis
Varland, picked up at the trade deadline, has made the transition to a full-time relief role this season and excelled with a 2.08 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 50:14 K:BB over 52 innings while recording 18 holds. The 27-year-old righty is still two seasons away from arbitration eligibility, so he could be a key piece of Toronto's bullpen for years to come. The organization's interest extends back to his time as a starting prospect however, so a transition back to that role in the future can't be ruled out.
