Camilo Doval

Camilo Doval

27-Year-Old PitcherRP
San Francisco Giants
2025 Fantasy Outlook
After a standout 2023, Doval took major steps backwards last season. His 14.4 percent walk rate was 2nd-worst among relief pitchers, which attributed to inflated ratios (4.88 ERA, 1.58 WHIP) and an eventual demotion from closing duties. Doval was even optioned to the minors for a few weeks, but the 27-year-old still led San Francisco with 23 saves (T-10th in the league) and a 63.9 percent team save share that ranked 13th among closers. The only thing working for Doval was his slider (.184 BAA, 45 percent whiff rate), which was a big reason he threw the pitch more than 50 percent of the time. Unfortunately, his cutter (.284 BAA, .552 SLG) and sinker (.375 BAA, .531 SLG) got crushed, the latter regressing significantly since he introduced it in 2022. Doval should give Ryan Walker competition for the closer role during spring training. Improving his command would go a long way towards reclaiming at least a share of the role he once held. Shaky in 23rd save
PSan Francisco Giants
September 20, 2024
Doval earned the save in Friday's 2-1 win at Kansas City while allowing one run on no hits and two walks over one inning. He struck out two.
ANALYSIS
After Ryan Walker had thrown 35 pitches over the previous two games and blown a save via walk-off homer Thursday, Doval was called upon in the ninth Friday. The former Giants closer looked rusty, as he opened the ninth with back-to-back walks. A groundout allowed both runners to move up a base, setting the table for a Garrett Hampson sacrifice fly to drive in the Royals' first run. However, Doval recovered to punch out the next batter, Tommy Pham, to end the game. Since being recalled from Triple-A on Aug. 24, Doval has pitched to a 7.36 ERA, 1.82 WHIP and 17:9 K:BB across 11 innings. He remains, at best, a secondary option for saves in San Francisco so long as Walker is around.

For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
2022
Tied for 2nd in the majors with a career-high 39 saves, Doval cemented himself as one of the top closers in the game last season. After introducing a sinker to his aresenal during the second-half of 2022, the pitch wasn't as effective last year (.303 BAA), but Doval generated a career-best 49.3% whiff rate on his slider, while his 100-mph cutter was the best it has ever been. The 26-year-old struck out far more batters with his cutter than years past, with 36 of his career-high 87 strikeouts coming via the pitch. Still, Doval mixed his three pitches quite evenly, making it more difficult for opposing hitters to predict what was coming. Walks are still an issue for Doval, leading to a higher WHIP than you'd like to see for a closer, but he balances that out with a 50-plus perecent groundball rate. Doval led qualified relievers with a 2.14 gmLI and he has little competition in San Francisco, thus making him a back-end top 10 closer for 2024.
Despite some initial uncertainty around the Giants closer role at the start of 2022, expectations for Doval were high in his first full big league season. The 25-year-old quickly solidified himself as San Francisco's primary closer, tallying 27 of the Giants' 39 saves for a 69.2% share that was ninth highest among closers. Doval's slider was nastier than ever - in fact, it was one of the best pitches in the league as measured by Statcast run value (-17). However, his cutter wasn't performing to expectations (.340 BAA) despite his 99th percentile velocity. A two-week rough stretch forced Doval to rethink his approach and he introduced a new sinker in mid-July. The pitch was a game changer for him, as it produced a -17.3 degree average launch angle that was the lowest against any pitch in the majors (min 50 BBE). With an already intimidating arsenal, the sky is the limit for Doval in 2023. He should be among the top 10 closers drafted.
Doval got his first taste of the majors last April, but it did not go smoothly. Through his first 13 appearances, the 23-year-old registered a 7.59 ERA and was charged with three blown saves. He allowed four home runs in 10.2 innings before the Giants sent him back to the minors. Fortunately, Doval was a different pitcher upon his September call up. Armed with a wipeout slider (59% pitch %) and fastball (41%) that nearly topped out at 102-mph, he finished the campaign with a 4-0 record and three saves over 14.1 scoreless innings. He even served as the Giants closer during the NLDS with all their relievers available. Doval has exciting upside and a bright high-leverage future ahead of him, but banking on him being San Francisco's full-time closer might be a mistake with Jake McGee and Tyler Rogers back for 2022. He should still be in the mix for saves, but how many is difficult to project at the moment.

Not on trade block
PSan Francisco Giants
December 9, 2024
Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey said Monday that he's not looking to trade Doval, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Doval has received trade interest from other clubs, but it doesn't appear Posey has any inclination to move on from the reliever, still viewing him as a late-inning weapon. The 27-year-old lost his closer job in 2024 and was demoted to the minors at one point, ultimately finishing with a 4.88 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 78:39 K:BB over 59 innings. However, Doval held a 2.73 ERA with 167 strikeouts over 135.1 frames from 2022 to 2023 and is under team control through 2027.
