2026 Fantasy Outlook
After winning NL Reliever of the Year and leading MLB in saves in 2024, Helsley didn't pitch to expectations last season. His strikeout and walk rates suffered and he had trouble producing outs with his four-seam fastball (.422 BAA). Helsley managed to hold a firm grip on closing duties for St. Louis, but his status a pending free-agent made a trade inevitable. The hard-throwing righty was dealt to the Mets and relegated to a setup role for the remainder of the season. Helsley acknowledged last August that his struggles were a result of tipping pitches, but poor performance persisted through the remainder of 2025. Multiple teams engaged Helsley for a potential starting role in 2026, but he'll remain a closer after signing a 2-year, $28M deal with Baltimore. Read Past Outlooks
Converts second save
Helsley earned the save in Sunday's 8-6 win over the Twins, allowing one hit while logging a strikeout in a scoreless ninth inning.
Analysis
Things got a little dicey for Helsley in the ninth inning. After Luke Keaschall led off the frame with a single, the Twins got the tying runs on base with two outs following a Gunnar Henderson error. However, Helsley was able to coax a flyout off the bat of James Outman, preserving the two-run victory while converting his second save in as many chances this season. Helsley has allowed just two hits and no walks while striking out four through his first two innings with the Orioles.

2019
Helsley entered 2024 with a tentative grasp on the closer role in St. Louis, but the hard-throwing righty led the majors with 49 saves, setting the Cardinals franchise record for a single season. Prior to the campaign, he had yet to achieve a 20-save season and had trouble staying healthy, but Helsley rewarded drafters who exhibited a higher risk tolerance. In fact, he did not miss any time, establishing new career highs in games played (65) and innings pitched (66.1). Helsey's 89.1 percent team save share was the second-highest mark among closers. The injury risk remains for someone who throws as hard as Helsley does -- he averaged 99.6 mph on his fastball (fifth among relievers) -- but the 30-year-old still warrants a pick among the top-10 closers for 2025. Just keep in mind this is Helsley's final year of salary arbitration before he becomes a free agent. If the Cardinals aren't competitive in 2025, he'll be a likely trade candidate.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Confirms interest from Detroit
According to Chelsea Janes of The Washington Post, Helsley confirmed that the Tigers were "in on [him] heavy" to sign as a starting pitcher, but he said it made more sense to sign with the Orioles as a reliever after weighing his options.
Analysis
Detroit was the only club specifically mentioned to be looking at Helsley as a starting pitcher, but other clubs were reportedly also interested. After posting a 2.04 ERA with 49 saves in 2024, the right-hander had a bumpy season in 2025 for the Cardinals and Mets, finishing with a 4.50 ERA and 1.54 WHIP in 58 appearances. Despite that inconsistency, Helsley is expected to handle closing duties for Baltimore with Felix Bautista set to miss at least most of 2026 due to shoulder surgery.
