Game Preview

The Yankees have been struggling badly this season and, even though they began the year as contenders, their lack of depth following several injuries has regressed them in a big way. The Orioles have been surprising but in a good way, and they've been hovering the .500 mark of late. They might make a playoff push in the final three weeks of the season, which would be quite an achievement for the franchise. The pitching matchup gives the Yankees an edge, though, as Masahiro Tanaka is a far more enticing pitching alternative than Asher Wojciechowski, who is projected to take the ball Sunday for Baltimore.

Shawn Armstrong - 10-Day IL - Back

8/29 1:57 PM EST - The Orioles announced Saturday that they are putting Armstrong on the 10-day injured list with back soreness, Joe Trezza of MLB.com reports. Armstrong hasn't pitched since last Saturday, when he gave up a run on two hits and a walk in just one-third of an inning against Boston. He will be eligible to return Sept. 5 as the transaction is retroactive to Aug. 26. The Orioles called up Evan Phillips in a corresponding move.

Alex Cobb - 10-Day IL - Undisclosed

The 32-year-old was scheduled to start Game 1 of Friday's doubleheader against the Yankees, but he's now sidelined by the undisclosed issue. Given the lack of information regarding his status, it's unclear when Cobb is expected to return.

Chris Davis - 10-Day IL - Kneecap

8/21 12:19 PM EST - Davis was placed on the 10-day injured list with left patella tightness, Rich Dubroff of BaltimoreBaseball.com reports. It's not yet clear how much time Davis is expected to miss. His loss won't be a particularly significant one for the Orioles, as he's hitting just .122/.173/.184 through 52 plate appearances this season, considerably worse than his quite poor numbers from the previous two campaigns. Ryan Mountcastle was recalled in a corresponding move.

Austin Hays - 10-Day IL - Ribs

9/1 3:46 PM EST - Hays (ribs) is expected to resume baseball activities soon and return to the roster at some point within the next two weeks, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. Hays has been out with a non-displaced rib fracture since mid-August but appears to be trending in the right direction. He hit just .203/.273/.246 in 19 games prior to suffering the injury.

Wade LeBlanc - 60-Day IL - Elbow

8/25 12:01 PM EST - LeBlanc was placed on the 45-day injured list Tuesday with a left elbow stress reaction. He is done for the season after logging an 8.06 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 13 strikeouts in 22.1 innings. LeBlanc was on a one-year deal, so he may have to settle for a minor-league contract if he hopes to stay in affiliated ball in 2021.

Trey Mancini - 60-Day IL - Abdomen

6/28 1:21 PM EST - Mancini (cancer) was placed on the 45-day injured list Sunday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. The 28-year-old announced in April he was undergoing six months of treatment for his battle with colon cancer, so it was only a matter of time before the team removed him from the 40-man roster. Mancini isn't expected to see the field in 2020 as a result, though he's expressed optimism about making a full recovery and resuming his career next season.

Richie Martin - 60-Day IL - Wrist

7/16 12:54 PM EST - Martin underwent surgery Wednesday to repair his fractured right wrist, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. Martin is expected to miss 2-to-3 months following surgery, effectively putting an end to his 2020 season. He appeared in 120 games during his rookie season in 2019, slashing .208/.260/.322 in 309 plate appearances.

Anthony Santander - 10-Day IL - Oblique

9/5 2:43 PM EST - Santander was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right oblique strain Saturday. Santander felt something in his oblique during Friday's matinee, and he could miss the rest of the season after he was diagnosed with a strain. DJ Stewart should see the bulk of the playing time in right field in his absence, and Mason Williams' contract was selected in a corresponding move.

Kohl Stewart - Out - Opt Out

7/31 1:22 PM EST - Stewart is opting out of the 2020 season due to concerns regarding COVID-19. The 25-year-old was in the mix to start Sunday's game versus the Rays, but he'll instead step away from the team due to the potential for serious complications from coronavirus as a Type 1 diabetic. Stewart was removed from the 60-man player pool and 40-man roster and was replaced by Tom Eshelman.

Stevie Wilkerson - Out - Finger

7/26 9:26 AM EST - Wilkerson (finger) could be sidelined for the rest of the season, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. The Orioles haven't provided a specific recovery timeline, but it appears the 28-year-old may be sidelined for the next two-plus months after fracturing his left ring finger last week. Wilkerson had a .669 OPS in 119 games last season and was in competition for a spot on the 30-man roster prior to the injury.

Domingo German - Suspension - Suspension

7/18 4:22 PM EST - German (suspension) will not be retiring, Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports. German announced in a somewhat cryptic Instagram post Friday that he was stepping away from baseball. He's since deleted that post and provided another one, in which he apologized for the "unsettling post," explaining that he let his emotions get the best of him after being forced to watch his teammates get ready for the season from afar. German will miss the entirety of the season as well as the first three games of next year while serving a domestic-violence suspension.

Aaron Judge - 10-Day IL - Calf

9/4 12:39 PM EST - Judge (calf) resumed baseball activities Friday, Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports. Judge has been on the injured list for one week of what was projected to be a three-week stay. Assuming his recovery proceeds without setbacks, he'll be ready to return with approximately 10 days left in the regular season. Given that he's already on his second trip to the injured list of the season due to the same calf issue, however, the Yankees are likely to be quite cautious with him.

Tommy Kahnle - 60-Day IL - Elbow

8/6 11:17 AM EST - Kahnle (elbow) was transferred to the 45-day injured list Thursday. He opted for Tommy John surgery earlier this week. Given the timing of the injury, it will take a very smooth recovery for Kahnle to return in 2021. Next year is his final year under club control, so it's possible the Yankees will non-tender him at some point in the next year.

Jonathan Loaisiga - 10-Day IL - Undisclosed

9/4 12:30 PM EST - Loaisiga was Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com retroactive to Wednesday for undisclosed reasons. The Yankees' vague language -- their announcement referred to the issue as "a medical condition that prevents him from playing and necessitates placement on the IL" -- makes this sound like a COVID-19 situation, though Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports that isn't the case. Loaisiga will be eligible to return from the injured list next Saturday, though the lack of clarity surrounding the issue makes it difficult to predict whether or not he'll be able to do so. Miguel Yajure was recalled to take his place in the bullpen.

Dan Otero - Out - Undisclosed

7/21 3:49 PM EST - Otero was placed on the restricted list Tuesday. The reasoning behind the move is unclear, but Otero won't be available for the start of the shortened season and has no official timeline for his return. The 35-year-old joined the Yankees on a minor-league deal with offseason after posting a 4.85 ERA and 1.52 WHIP with the Indians in 2019.

James Paxton - 10-Day IL - Forearm

9/3 12:12 PM EST - Paxton (forearm) began his throwing program Thursday, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. He played catch in what marks the first steps of him building back up. The Yankees hope that Paxton can be back to make a start or two at the end of the month so that they can figure out what he will be able to provide them with in the postseason, but it's unclear how realistic that timetable is.

Luis Severino - 60-Day IL - Elbow

6/28 3:17 PM EST - Severino (elbow) was placed on the 45-day injured list Sunday. This was inevitable after Severino underwent Tommy John surgery in February. He has been progressing well in his rehab and is optimistic that he will be able to pitch for the Yankees at some point in 2021.

Giancarlo Stanton - 10-Day IL - Hamstring

8/31 9:40 AM EST - Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Stanton (hamstring) did not participate in baseball activities Sunday and is "still not all the way there," Brendan Kuty of NJ Advance Media reports. Stanton has been on the injured list since Aug. 9. General manager Brian Cashman suggested Friday that the slugger was at least a week away, but it's reasonable to hold off on any expectations of Stanton returning at the early end of that timeframe given Boone's comments Sunday. "He's still not all the way there," Boone said. "Doing well. Good progressions and stuff. Today's a very light day for him. No baseball activities. But he's not all the way out of the woods yet as far as the injury. But he is running at about 75-80 percent. Hitting and doing all that stuff is not a problem yet. We just want to make sure we get him to the finish line with the injury."

Gio Urshela - 10-Day IL - Elbow

9/5 4:22 PM EST - Tests on Urshela's injured elbow did not reveal additional issues beyond a bone spur, and the infielder is expected to return to action when first eligible, Marly Rivera of ESPN.com reports. Urshela was placed on the 10-day injured list Friday and is in line to return to action against Toronto on Sept. 15. The third baseman had been playing well prior to landing on the IL, racking up three consecutive multi-hit games and going 6-for-11 with a pair of doubles and three RBI over the span. He is expected to resume baseball activities in a few days.
