Jared Jones

Jared Jones

24-Year-Old PitcherSP
Pittsburgh Pirates
2026 Fantasy Outlook
Jones suffered the same fate as many young pitchers that throw with significant velocity, as a barking elbow in mid-March ultimately led to surgery two months later. He was estimated to have a 10-to-12 month recovery timeline, suggesting that he underwent the internal brace procedure, rather than traditional Tommy John. Given the timing of the procedure, it's unclear when Jones will make his 2025 debut. However, he had made substantial progress as of mid-December, throwing from flat ground for the first time post-surgery. Prior to the injury, Jones had turned in an impressive 2024 campaign - his first in the majors - as he posted an 18.5 K-BB% across 121.2 innings. The primary blemish on his resume was his vulnerability to the long ball, as he served up 1.33 HR/9 primarily due to him surrendering a significant amount of hard contact. Jones had introduced a sinker in spring training - likely in an effort to curtail that issue-but the more pressing concern for the time being is that Jones returns to the mound and proves he's healthy. Given the difficulty of projecting when Jones will return and how effective he will be, he's best left as a late-round speculative pick early in the offseason. Things should become clearer as spring training progresses, and his draft cost could rise quickly if he appears to be on track for a return early in the new campaign. Read Past Outlooks

Allows two homers in first loss
PPittsburgh Pirates
June 15, 2026
Jones (1-1) took the loss Monday, allowing five runs on eight hits and a walk over four innings against the Athletics. He struck out four.
Analysis
Jones was hampered by the long ball, as he surrendered two-run homers to Nick Kurtz and Jeff McNeil in the second and fourth innings, respectively. The early returns for Jones since making his season debut May 29 have been lackluster, though a slow start from the 24-year-old is hardly surprising given that he's coming off missing all of 2025 due to right elbow surgery. The right-hander will carry a 6.23 ERA, 1.62 WHIP and 18:6 K:BB across 17.1 innings (four starts) into his next outing, tentatively scheduled for Sunday on the road against the Rockies.

Stat Review
How does Jared Jones compare to other starting pitchers?
This section compares his stats with all starting pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 120 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 120 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2025
2024
Most eyes were on the other 22-year-old pitcher on the staff, but Jones more than held his own in his rookie season as one of just four pitchers of that age to work at least 100 major league innings in 2024. Jones made the club out of camp but missed some time over the summer with a Grade 2 lat strain. Jones' ERA was on the high side overall thanks to a below average home-run rate, but that can be forgiven with such a young pitcher. Had Jones not been pitching behind a generational phenom of a pitcher, his season would be looked at in a better light by many. You should be encouraged how Pittsburgh has managed to keep Jones's workload around 125 to 135 innings each of the past three seasons while developing him. We should not expect him to come out working 170-plus innings this season, but the organization has clearly been very deliberate in their management of Jones. The next step will be to find a more usable third pitch, as neither his curveball or changeup are there yet, neither by outcomes nor other underlying indicators. He was still rather split neutral despite the lack of a quality third pitch, which really speaks to how impressive his fastball and slider combination is right now.
Jones went from potential closer-of-the-future in Pittsburgh to a good enough strike thrower and craftsman to project as a high-strikeout starter. His 70-grade four-seamer has excellent ride and sits at 96 mph while touching 100 mph. The 6-foot-1 righty also throws a plus 89-mph slider that touches 94 mph and adequate third and fourth pitches in his curveball and changeup. His 8.9 percent walk rate at Double-A was excellent given his age (21) and electric arsenal. The 9.7 percent walk rate he posted at Triple-A may seem a bit high, but that mark is actually pretty encouraging given his age and the automated balls and strikes system at the top level of the minors. Jones threw 126.1 total innings and could surpass 150 innings in his age-22 season. He is on track to join the big-league rotation sometime this season.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Likely to undergo Tommy John
PPittsburgh Pirates
May 19, 2025
Jones is likely to undergo Tommy John surgery, though nothing has been decided yet, according to Alex Stumpf of MLB.com.
Analysis
The right-hander will meet with Dr. Keith Meister on Tuesday to analyze further steps, although Stumpf indicated that surgery is "an option" for the righty. Jones was shut down near the end of Spring Training due to elbow soreness that eventually turned out to be a UCL sprain. Jones posted a 4.14 ERA and 132:39 K:BB across 121.2 innings in 22 starts for the Pirates in 2024.
