2026 Fantasy Outlook
Williams' one-year gamble in Dallas paid off, with his breakout campaign resulting in a three-year, $24 million extension this offseason. Williams' season-ending knee injury from 2022 largely defined his career going into last season, though he seemed to answer any questions about his recovery by averaging 4.8 yards per carry over 252 attempts, figures that register as especially healthy given the frequency of short-range strikes (11 touchdowns). Williams is a trusted pass-protection back almost to the point of detriment to his fantasy upside -- if he weren't leaned on so much in blitz pickup he might have more targets to show for it. The targets Williams does see are often ugly throws under duress or panicked checkdowns, as opposed to dialed-up screens with downfield blocking. In other words, Williams' ugly 2.9 YPT from 2025 might not improve by as much as would normally be expected. His fantasy utility in Dallas thus figures to remain almost entirely owed to rushing production. Good thing, then, that the Dallas interior offensive line is especially well built for run blocking. As well as Williams played in 2025, some of his production can probably be attributed to a favorable environment for rushing efficiency in general. Read Past Outlooks
RANKS
Backfield untouched by NFL Draft
The Cowboys did not add to the running back position in the 2026 NFL Draft, leaving Williams (shoulder) positioned to reprise a bell-cow role, Jon Machota of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Williams re-signed with Dallas via a three-year, $24 million deal in February after putting together a breakout campaign with the team in 2025, totaling 252 carries for 1,201 yards (4.8 YPC) and 11 touchdowns across 16 regular-season appearances. He also secured 35 of 51 targets for 137 yards and two scores. Given that the No. 2 role behind Williams appears open to a competition between Malik Davis (eye), Jaydon Blue, Phil Mafah and Israel Abanikanda, the Cowboys appeared to be a candidate to add playmaking upside to the backfield via the NFL Draft, particularly in the form of a pass-catching complement. Instead, fourth-round offensive lineman Drew Shelton represents the team's main addition on offense, and Williams retains a clear path to a workhorse role. Williams missed Week 18 due to a shoulder issue but is presumably ready for spring activities.

Williams' Denver career never quite panned out, but Dallas is placing a one-year bet that he can tap back into the tackle-breaking explosiveness he showed in college at North Carolina. As much as Williams never broke out in Denver, his 2021 rookie year was a clear success and his 2022 sophomore year was ended by a severe knee injury that may have limited him in 2023 as well. The Cowboys have the option of running a rotation between Williams, Miles Sanders and rookie fifth-round pick Jaydon Blue. Sanders is likely a rushing specialist, and Blue might be an in-space specialist, but Williams' versatility makes him a slight favorite to get the most playing time after logging 859 yards from scrimmage on 543 snaps in 2024. If Williams can separate from Sanders and Blue, then there could be considerable fantasy value. Anchored by Tyler Smith and 12th overall pick Tyler Booker at guard, Dallas might have the league's best interior — and perhaps best power-blocking — offensive line.
