Tournament Preview
Torrey Pines has historically been one of the tougher courses on the PGA Tour rotation, but Justin Rose made easy work of it at last week's Farmers Insurance Open. The 45-year-old Englishman was in control from the first round Thursday, and while his two-under 70 final round was his worst day of the event, he still set a tournament scoring record with a cumulative 23-under-par score (265). It was Rose's 13th PGA Tour victory of his career and surged him up seven spots to third in the OWGR rankings behind Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy.
Rose's historic victory wasn't the only prominent storyline last week at Torrey Pines, which saw the PGA return of Brooks Koepka after a nearly four-year hiatus in LIV Golf. He was never really in contention at the FIO and struggled mightily with the putter, but making the cut can be considered a win for Koepka. This week's WM Phoenix Open, in which Koepka is a two-time winner (2015, 2021) gives the 35-year-old golfer another opportunity for an improved performance. Koepka and Scheffler will be joined this week by other top golfers including Xander Schauffele, Harris English, two-time WM Open winner Hideki Matsuyama and Sony Open winner Chris Gotterup.
The sports world may have their focus turned to big events this week such as the NBA trade deadline (farewell, Anfernee Simons) and Super Bowl LX (the return the Patriots/evil empire), but the WM Phoenix Open will still gather plenty of fan fare, and not just for the big names in the field. TPC Scottsdale's signature hole, the par-3 16th hole, is unlike any other in the golfing world (which LIV has attempted to replicate with their party holes). Some 15,000 fans will fill The Coliseum and make their voices heard on every shot made from the field, from raucous cheers to sneering boos. The course itself has fairly wide fairways and presents opportunities to make moves up the leaderboard, including the reachable, 553-yard par-5 and the driveable par-4 17th that measures at 332 yards. Ballstriking, approach and putting are going to be the keys to victory at this week's WM Phoenix Open.
Underdog Contest Overview
Underdog hosts drafts every week at three buy-in amounts; The Par 3 at $3, the featured draft at $10, and "The Sandbagger" at $100. Each entrant will be paired up with five other participants and participate in a six-man snake draft of teams made up of six players (36 total selections), with each selection on a 30-second timer. For example, the person lucky with the first overall pick and lucky enough to get Scheffler (unless you like to live dangerously) will have to wait until 2.6 and 3.1 to make their next selections. Points are allocated to golfers based on their performance on every hole, with bonus points available for golfers who make consecutive birdies or finish a round bogey free.
First Two Rounds
Si Woo Kim (4.0 Average Draft Position)
Kim has started the 2026 PGA Tour season nicely, finishing in the top-10 in each of his last two outings that includes a T2 performance at the Farmers Insurance Open last week. Through three Tour events, he ranks fourth in SG: Approach the Green, sixth in driving accuracy, 10th in SG: Total and 18th in GIR, and he would be in strong contention for a fifth Tour victory with improved performance around and on the green. Kim has made the cut in each of his last five appearances at the WM Open, finishing T23-T12-T21 over his last three outings at TPC Scottsdale.
Chris Gotterup (8.4 ADP)
Gotterup followed up his victory at the Sony Open with a respectable T18 performance at the FIO. He's been one of the best off the tee to open the 2026 season, ranking third in SG: Off the Tee and fourth in driving distance while ranking in the top-40 in SG: Around the Green in SG: Approach the green. He has failed to make the cut in each of his last two outings at TPC Scottsdale, but perhaps third time's a charm this week.
Jake Knapp (11.4 ADP)
Knapp has finished T11-T5 in his first two outings of the 2026 season (and top-15 in three consecutive Tour events) and ranks fifth in SG: Putting, ninth in SG: Total and 18th in SG: Off the Tee. He's made the cut in each of his two appearances at the WM Open, including a T28 finish in 2024.
Pierceson Coody (12.3 ADP)
Rose's historic performance at Torrey Pines last week cast a great shadow over other storylines, including Coody's seven-under 65 final round to surge to a T2 finish, which was the latter's best Tour finish since the ISCO Championship in July of 2024, when he lost in a five-man playoff. Coody has finished T13-T18-T2 in each of his first three tournaments of the year and ranks in the top-25 in GIR, SG: Total and SG: Off the Tee.
Middle-Round Value
Brooks Koepka (18.8 ADP)
Ok, so his ADP is being driven up largely by his name value. That said, there's something special in that Koepka's first and last Tour wins (non-major) both took place at TPC Scottsdale, and the five-time major winner should be used to rowdy crowds after his LIV Golf stint. Koepka's putting game at Torrey Pines last week was dreadful, but he ranked near the top of the field in SG: Around the Green and SG: Approach the Green.
Michael Thorbjornsen (21.1 ADP)
After failing to make the cut in his 2026 debut at The American Express, Thorbjornsen bounced back with a T18 outing at last week's Farmers Insurance Open. He was one of the best performers off the tee last season, leading the Tour in Total Driving while ranking sixth in driving distance and seventh in SG: Off the Tee. Thorbjornsen finished T74 in his lone WM Open appearance (2025).
Matt McCarty (27.4 ADP)
McCarty might be a bit of a reach in the fourth round, but he has been one of the more consistent performers on the PGA Tour following The Open in mid-July. He's made the cut in each of his last eight Tour tournaments, three of which were top-10 finishes that includes his share of second at The American Express two weeks ago. McCarty was one of the better putters in the PGA last season, and he has made some considerable progress off the tee and in his approach game early in 2026.
Late-Round Targets
Daniel Berger (29.5 ADP)
Berger has enjoyed plenty of success at TPC Scottsdale in his career, making the cut in seven of 10 outings that include a T2 finish in 2025 and four other top-11 performances. He's made the cut in each of his two Tour appearances in 2026, including a T6 outing at the Sony Open in Hawaii to open the season.
Haotong Li (34.3 ADP)
Li earned his PGA Tour card for the 2026 seasons after finishing seventh on the 2025 DP World Tour Race to Dubai ranking, highlighted by his victory at the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters in August. He has made the cut in each of his first three PGA events of the season, including a T8 finish at The American Express two weeks ago. Li's putting game needs work, but he ranks 13th in SG: Approach the Green and SG: Off the Tee and 18th in GIR.
Patrick Rodgers (35.4 ADP)
Rodgers ended last week's FIO on a high note with a six-under 66 in the final round to crack into the top-30. He ranks ninth in GIR and the the top-25 in SG: Total and SG: Approach the green early in the 2026 season.
Max McGreevy (34.4 ADP)
McGreevy would have been in contention for a top-10 finish at last week's Farmers Insurance Open had it not been for a disastrous back nine in the final round, when he carded two double bogeys and a bogey across a three-hole span.
