28-Year-Old Second Baseman2B
Milwaukee Brewers
2026 Fantasy Outlook
Save for a pair of short stints in the second half with Triple-A Worcester, Hamilton was with the Red Sox all season. However, he didn't play as well-or as often-as he did the previous season. He trimmed his strikeout rate slightly, but he hit the ball with less authority. Hamilton lofts too much contact for a hitter with 95th-percentile sprint speed but only modest power. He managed to hit six homers in 194 plate appearances, but he would have been better off hitting the ball on the ground and letting his teammates drive him home. Hamilton's fantasy charm lies in his stolen bases, with 55 total over the last two seasons. However, his .285 OBP during that span highlights his need to refine his approach. He was traded to the Brewers in February, which opens up his path to playing time a bit. However, Hamilton is likely to be limited to an infield utility role, and even if there are injuries elsewhere in the infield, Milwaukee seems likely to test their other options rather than give Hamilton regular run. Analysis
Hamilton took Kai-Wei Teng deep for his first homer of the season in the top of the third inning. Seeing regular playing time at shortstop and third base for Milwaukee, Hamilton's long ball snapped an 0-for-12 skid. He's slashing a paltry .226/.314/.282 with four extra-base hits, including the one homer, nine RBI, 22 runs scored, 10 stolen bases and a 15:29 BB:K across 147 plate appearances this season.

Stat Review
How does David Hamilton compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • BB/K
    Walk to strikeout ratio
  • BB Rate
The percentage of plate appearances resulting in a walk.
  • K Rate

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2023
The Red Sox called up Hamilton from Triple-A Worcester early in April when Trevor Story sustained a shoulder injury. The utility infielder wasn't expected to be a regular, but Story's injury lingered, and Vaughn Grissom's groin/hamstring left a hole at second base that was never adequately filled. Hamilton answered the call, playing 56 games at shortstop and 36 at second base. His walk rate wasn't as good as in the minors, but an elevated BABIP allowed Hamilton to take advantage of his base-stealing prowess - he finished second on the team with 33 steals in 98 games. His season ended in late August due to a fractured finger, but Hamilton made a greater impact than his .248/.303/.395 line might suggest. The club is expected to go with a Story/Grissom middle infield, so Hamilton will have to win a utility backup role. Red Sox manager Alex Cora is unlikely to waste a roster spot on a pinch-running specialist.
Hamilton graduated to Triple-A Worcester to start 2023 then got his first taste of MLB, as the Red Sox dealt with injuries and poor production from their middle infield. The speedy Hamilton, who swiped 57 bases for the WooSox in 2023, had two steals and batted .121 in 15 games for Boston. The Red Sox entered the offseason with a glaring need at second base, which put Hamilton's name in the mix, but the acquisition of Vaughn Grissom from Atlanta in the Chris Sale trade should put an end to the notion of Hamilton breaking camp with a full-time gig. Someone with Hamilton's profile - his plus-plus speed is his best asset - needs to get on base with regularity. He draws walks at a decent clip but there's a lot of swing-and-miss, too. All signs point to Hamilton opening the year at Triple-A and on the Mass Pike shuttle between Worcester and Boston.
Hamilton was acquired by the Red Sox in December 2021 in the trade that sent Hunter Renfroe to the Brewers, and the young shortstop had a .253/.341/.405 slash line with 12 home runs and 71 steals for Double-A Portland during his first year with the organization. Now 25 years old, Boston will likely want to see Hamilton at the Triple-A level in 2023, and he was added to the 40-man roster in November to protect him from the Rule 5 draft. Hamilton's work on the basepaths is clearly his best asset, and he should be in the mix to make his big-league debut if he has a solid spring training and start to the season at Triple-A.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Impressing coaching staff
2BBoston Red Sox
June 4, 2024
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Thursday they believe their best defensive alignment is with Hamilton at shortstop and that the club is "very pleased" with Hamilton both offensively and defensively, reports Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican.
Analysis
The 26-year-old has worked as Boston's primary shortstop over the past couple weeks while Ceddanne Rafaela has manned center field. Hamilton had a slow start to the season offensively and hit .211 in his first 14 games, but since the start of May, he has a .316/.371/.456 slash line with seven steals in 57 at-bats. Despite Cora's praises, Hamilton's defense could use some work as far as the advanced stats are concerned, since he has minus-three DRS and minus-2.4 UZR/150.
