Australian Open Tennis Picks: Alcaraz vs. Djokovic

Carlos Alcaraz (-321) vs. Novak Djokovic (+255)

Alcaraz and Djokovic both pulled off Houdini acts to win five-set thrillers in the semifinals. The top-seeded Spaniard overcame a leg injury/cramp in the third set of his five-set win over Alexander Zverev and won the last four games to escape with a 6-4, 7-6 (5), 6-7 (3), 6-7 (4), 7-5 win after Zverev served for the match at 5-3 in the fifth. After that five-hour, 27-minute thriller came to a close, Djokovic took the court and turned back the clock with a 3-6, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over two-time defending Australian Open champion Jannik Sinner. Djokovic was frequently gasping for air and hunched over in the third set but found a second wind for the last two sets and played his best tennis in the clutch, saving 16 of Sinner's 18 break points. Alcaraz hadn't dropped a set in the tournament prior to facing Zverev, while Djokovic played just over two sets in his previous two matches combined thanks to injury luck. Both players' recovery capabilities will be tested after their physical semifinals, and Alcaraz is likely to have an advantage there thanks to his youth.

Djokovic has a 5-4 head-to-head edge over Alcaraz, including 3-1 on hard courts, but Alcaraz has a 3-2 advantage at Grand Slams. They faced off in the quarterfinals of last year's Australian Open, with Djokovic snagging a four-set victory while playing through an injury that hampered his movement but had an even greater negative effect on Alcaraz's level of focus and decisiveness. That loss was a learning experience for Alcaraz, who responded with a straight-set victory in the semifinals of the U.S. Open, which was the most recent matchup between these two. Djokovic's rock-solid groundstrokes and unparalleled problem-solving ability on the court have made him a tough matchup for Alcaraz, despite the Spaniard's superior athleticism and ridiculous shotmaking ability. It's fair to wonder if Djokovic can produce back-to-back performances with the quality he showed against Sinner at this stage of his career, but if the Serb does so, then this match will likely come down to a few key points between two players with impressive track records of playing their best tennis in the biggest moments.

Australian Open Men's Semifinal Prediction: Alcaraz def. Djokovic 7-5, 3-6, 6-7, 6-4, 6-4
