Rest-of-Season Projections
2025 Fantasy Outlook
LaPorta took a step back after his outstanding rookie season, dipping from 86 catches for 889 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2023 (on 120 targets) to 60 catches for 726 yards and seven TDs in 2024 (83 targets). There’s plenty of success to go around on a Lions offense that led the NFL with 33.2 points per game last season, but RBs Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery tend to eat first, and Amon-Ra St. Brown is still the top pass catcher. That makes it tough to project big-time volume for LaPorta or Jameson Williams, who broke out in 2024 with his first 1,000-yard season while getting only eight more targets than LaPorta. The tight end did improve later in the season after a slow start, scoring double-digit PPR points in his final seven games (including playoffs) and recording six or more targets in each of his last nine. LaPorta’s 17 TDs since he came into the league are tied for the most among TEs over that span, and his 20 red-zone targets in 2024 were fifth most at the position, so he should keep scoring plenty of TDs under new offensive coordinator John Morton. The question is whether LaPorta can also match his target volume from 2023 and the latter part of 2024, rather than slumping to a lesser role like he did for the first half of last season (3.6 targets per game). Planning to be ready for camp
LaPorta said Monday that he will enter the next phase of his rehab from back surgery this week and anticipates being fully cleared in advance of training camp, Richard Silva of The Detroit News reports.
ANALYSIS
The 24-year-old tight end ended up missing the Lions' final eight games of the season after he suffered a herniated disk in a Nov. 9 win over the Commanders. LaPorta said that he was initially hopeful to avoid a stint on injured reserve and return to action in 2-to-3 weeks after suffering the injury, but after further deliberation, he and the Lions decided that opting for surgery was the best long-term course of action. Six weeks removed from his procedure, LaPorta appears to be progressing as anticipated, and while he may not be ready to take contact in OTAs this spring, he expressed optimism that he'll be able to be "up, running around" during those workouts. LaPorta will be eligible for an extension when the new league year begins in March, and retaining the tight end on a long-term deal will likely be a priority for Detroit after he averaged 4.4 receptions and 50.1 receiving yards per game while scoring 20 total touchdowns in 42 appearances through his first three NFL seasons.

Young tight ends often take a year or two to find their footing in the NFL, but LaPorta bucked that trend last season with 86 catches for 889 yards and 10 touchdowns on 120 targets. While he couldn’t quite catch up to Mike Ditka’s rookie-TE records of 1,076 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns, LaPorta’s 86 receptions became the new standard. No other tight end scored more than six touchdowns last year, and the second-round pick out of Iowa also ranked top five at his position for catches, targets and yards. WR Amon-Ra St. Brown is likely to lead the Lions in receiving volume again in 2024, but the 44-target gap between St. Brown and LaPorta last year was smaller than the 49-target gap between LaPorta and Jared Goff's third-favorite target, RB Jahmyr Gibbs. Being the clear second option in a top-notch offense should work out just fine, even leaving the 23-year-old tight end some room for volume growth relative to last year. While he's unlikely to outscore all other TEs by four TDs again, the ingredients are there for LaPorta to follow up his superb rookie season with another strong campaign.
