2026 Fantasy Outlook
Suarez is about as good as it gets for a pitcher who's neither a true innings eater nor a frontline, high-strikeout arm. He reached free agency this winter having never technically finished as a qualified starter, with last year's 157.1 innings representing a career high. That didn't prevent the Red Sox from locking him in with a five-year, $130 million contract. Back issues prevented the lefty from making his season debut until early May, but he went on to make 26 starts with a 3.20 ERA and 1.22 WHIP. Suarez's strikeout rate (23.2%), walk rate (5.8%) and groundball rate (46.8%) were all better than average for the second straight year. It's a consistent, well-rounded profile, though not one without question marks. His fastball velocity dipped to 91.2 mph last season, and while he was able to mitigate that through excellent command (his 113 Location+ led all pitchers who threw at least 120 innings), it's a profile that remains precarious. If his fastball loses another tick, or if his command falls from great to merely good, his ERA could balloon quickly. Read Past Outlooks
Punches out seven in no-decision
Suarez took a no-decision Saturday against the Rangers, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks in five innings. He struck out seven.
Analysis
Suarez gave the Red Sox five strong innings while keeping the ball in the yard Saturday. The 30-year-old southpaw has tossed at least five innings in four consecutive starts, and he's also served up just a pair of home runs since the start of April after surrendering two long balls in his season debut. Suarez will take a strong 3.21 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 70:21 K:BB across 70 innings into his next scheduled outing at pitcher-friendly T-Mobile Park in Seattle.

Suarez was one of the stars of the early part of last season, recording a 1.75 ERA and 0.89 WHIP through his first 15 starts. He rode a bit of good luck, but his strikeout rate was up (26.8%), his walk rate was down (5.4%) and his ERA estimators (2.70 FIP, 2.84 xFIP) were excellent. But what looked like a breakout in Suarez's age-28 season was not to last. He slumped to a 6.17 ERA in 12 starts the rest of the way, struggling on either side of a one-month absence due to lower-back soreness. That ERA wasn't necessarily a fair reflection of his performance, but his 4.42 FIP and 3.93 xFIP down the stretch were a far cry from his early-season success as his K% (18.4) and BB% (8.1) took big steps back. Suarez's good stretch was longer than his bad stretch, resulting in year-end numbers which are stronger than we're used to seeing from him, but the late-season swoon pushes back against the idea that he's anything more than the groundball-heavy innings-eater he's been for years.

Deal with BOS backloaded
Suarez's five-year, $130 million contract with the Red Sox is significantly backloaded, reports Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com.
Analysis
The deal has an average annual salary of $12.5 million for the first two years and $35 million across the final three years, which lowers Boston's cash expenses those first two years without affecting how much Suarez counts toward the competitive balance tax. The 30-year-old lefty tossed a career-high 157.1 innings during the 2025 regular season and finished with a 3.20 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 151:38 K:BB.
