We had our annual Huevos League Auction, commished by Ballys Sports' Brad Evans and filled with a lot of the Yahoo Sports crew. It's 14-team, half-point PPR, super-flex format with $200 budgets and large rosters: QB, 2-RB, 3-WR, 1-TE, 2-FLX, 1-QBFLX, 1-Defense, five bench spots.
Here are the results:
I don't usually go into auctions with much of a plan other than to spend at least half my budget early on a few stars and then to wait as long as possible to have money left for the usual end-game bargains.
I felt I executed pretty well, though the Patrick Mahomes buy for $39 was an accident. I hit the plus-one button at 36, and apparently two other people hit it just before I did, and next thing I knew I had him for $39. Not a huge deal to get a player you like at $37 for two dollars extra.
I often jump bid players to speed things along -- there's no point in going from $1 to $2 to $3 on someone we all know will go for more than $30, so I'll sometimes just push a guy up to $30 or $33 and see if it sticks. DeAndre Hopkins stuck at $33, something I'm happy with given the prices of the other receivers in his range. I went to the mat for DK Metcalf at $35 though -- he's my No. 3 overall receiver.
The one somewhat rash move I made was getting Miles Sanders for $19. I thought the price was right at the time, and the quality of backs available were declining, but it's only half-PPR, and I could have used the money on other players at that point. I was happy with DJ Chark at $8, and I gambled on Cam Newton for $5, as I think he's still 50/50 to win the job.
