Box Score Breakdown: Snap, Routes, Air Yards & Personnel from Week 7

This article is part of our Box Score Breakdown series.

This was a light week for injuries, especially relative to the last two. Still, there were a bunch of interesting developments in terms of non-injury-related role changes, plus some promising performances from rookie wide receivers.

Three games in particular had a bunch of developments with major fantasy relevance — Browns-Colts, Cardinals-Seahawks and Steelers-Rams. If you're only going to check out a few games below, those are the three to pick.

Vocab/Index

  • DB = QB dropbacks = pass attempts + sacks
  • Rts = Routes
  • RT% = Percentage of team dropbacks on which the player ran a route
  • aDOT = Average Depth of Target
  • AY = Air Yards
  • TS SZN = Percentage of team targets this season
  • AY SZN = Percentage of team air yards this season

Personnel Groupings

  • 11 = 1 RB / 1 TE / 3 WR
  • 12 = 1 RB / 2 TE / 2 WR
  • 21 = 2 RB / 1 TE / 2 WR
  • 13 = 1 RB / 3 TE / 1 WR
  • 01 = 0 RB / 1 TE / 4 WR

Any RB/WR/TE with a touch, carry or snap share of at least 10 percent is listed below. Any personnel grouping used on at least 10 percent of snaps is listed, in addition to rates for 11 and 12 personnel (by far the two most popular sets league-wide).

Jaguars (31) at Saints (24)

  • Jaguars Personnel: 11 - 63% / 12 - 25%
  • 30 DBs — 6.0 aDOT — 21-of-30 for 217 yards — 1

  • RB Travis Etienne played a season-high 88 percent of snaps and scored two rushing TDs for a third straight week. He has at least 12 carries and three targets in every game this season, in addition to playing no less than 71 percent of snaps.
    • The only downside has been his YPC dropping to 3.97. And field-position context can't really be blamed given that only 10 percent of his carries have come in the red zone (last year it was 18.1 percent).
    • He's dominating the short-yardage work these days too, after Tank Bigsby got a bunch in September.
      • Bigsby's two carries Thursday came on a 2nd-and-5 and 2nd-and-3.
  • WR Jamal Agnew filled in for Zay Jones (knee) as the No. 3 receiver again. Jones might be back after the minibye and is definitely worth adding if available in medium/deep leagues.
    • Hope for Calvin Ridley becoming a true target hog has all but died at this point. We could see a pretty flat distribution between Ridley, Christian Kirk, Zay Jones and Evan Engram down the stretch. If anything, Kirk looks like the main/best guy.
  • Engram has seven or eight targets in six straight games, but he still hasn't scored a TD or gone any higher than 67 yards in a game this season. He'll eventually score a few TDs, but his flats-heavy workload (4.2 aDOT, 8.4 YPR) isn't especially promising in terms of yardage and big plays... which was also the case last season but not to the same extent (6.3 aDOT, 10.5 YPR).

  • RB Jamaal Williams got 22% of snaps in his return from IR, with Kendre Miller at 3%.
    • Williams didn't get any short-yardage carries.
  • RB Alvin Kamara is averaging 17.3 carries for 65.3 yards and 8.8 catches for 44.3 yards
    • In addition to his huge receiving stats, Kamara had a two-point conversion, a 4th-and-1 conversion and a 4th-and-2 conversion.
    • It might be that Taysom Hill is more of a threat than Williams to poach short-yardage work (Hill scored a 1-yard TD after Kamara had three consecutive unsuccessful carries from the Jacksonville 2-yard line at the end of Q3 / start of Q4.
  • Hill has 12 targets over the past two weeks after never previously getting more than three in any one game. It is possible Juwan Johnson (calf) returns from a four-game absence after the mini-bye, which presumably would end Hill's run as an active pass catcher.
  • QB Derek Carr's contract isn't that large by starting QB standards, but it looks awful given that he declined last year, has been even worse this year (at age 32) and is on a team that already had one of the best backups in the league.
    • Jameis Winston should get a shot, at least for a few weeks, to see if he's better than Carr at this juncture of their respective careers. If that kills whatever's left of Carr's confidence, he's toast anyway.
  • WR Chris Olave had multiple miscommunications with Carr, whose body language suggested it was the wideout's fault (though Carr was generally mopey and perturbed Thursday night... not a good look, bro).
    • Olave's target and air-yard shares are what you were hoping for when drafting him, but he's dropped from 8.8 YPT as a rookie to 6.9 this year, with his catch rate (57.4%), aDOT (12.9) and yards per catch (12.1) all down moderate amounts from last year.

WRHunter Renfrow37%2146%3212-14-0 5.1%5.2%
  • TE Michael Mayer played 91% of snaps before the fourth quarter and had 64% route share. He lost a few routes to Austin Hooper and a few more to pass-blocking, then missed out on a bunch in the fourth quarter once the Raiders pulled key players.
    • PFF charted Mayer blocking on four of his 28 pass snaps (14.3), right around his season mark of 15.3 percent. It's the highest rate for any TE with 100 or more pass snaps, but really not a huge difference compared to, say, Cole Kmet (12.4%), Gerald Everett (11.2%), Jonnu Smith (10.3%), Sam LaPorta (10.3%), etc.
  • WR Tre Tucker ran more routes than Hunter Renfrow for a second straight week.
    • Renfrow may be traded, though it'll require the Raiders eating money. He ran 17 of his 21 routes in the fourth quarter Sunday, i.e., he's only the No. 4 WR.
  • RB Josh Jacobs played 86% of snaps before the fourth quarter. It was only in the fourth quarter that he lost a bunch of work to Zamir White, who got four of his five touches in the final frame.
  • If we don't count Week 2, which WR Jakobi Meyers missed, he'd rank 14th in the league w/ 26.3% target share 16th w/ 36.3% air yard share.
    • Davante Adams has 29.6% target share (11th) and 39.4% air yard share (13th) in the games Meyers has played.
  • QB Aidan O'Connell replaced Brian Hoyer for the final two drives. The first ended with an interception; the second with a 9-yard TD pass to Meyers.
    • Hoyer went 17-of-32 for 129 yards and two INTs. The Chicago defense has improved considerably since the beginning of the year, but that's still kind of embarrassing.

  • RBs D'Onta Foreman and Darrynton Evans split playing time close to 50/50 in both halves, with Foreman having a 21-17 advantage in opportunities but dominating the touchdowns.
    • Foreman had rushing TDs of 2 and 3 yards in the first half, followed by a 5-yard receiving score in the third quarter.
    • Evans got a carry from the 6-yard line but no other touches inside the 10.
    • RB Roschon Johnson (concussion) has missed consecutive games but stands some chance to return Week 8, while Khalil Herbert (IR - high ankle) will be out at least two more games.
  • WR Tyler Scott's snap/route shares were nearly identical to the previous week. He's worth making note of in dynasty, for sure, and possibly in deeper season-long leagues in case WR Darnell Mooney is traded or injured.
    • Everyone talked about the battle between QBs Tyson Bagent and Brian Hoyer, but this game also featured a battle between No. 3 WRs who were starters for U of Cincinnati the past couple years. Note that Tucker was drafted before Scott despite the latter having a better college career at a younger age and very similar measurables.

  • QB Deshaun Watson returned from a two-game absence but couldn't even finish the first quarter before being pulled again due to shoulder soreness. P.J. Walker played the rest of the game.
  • RB Kareem Hunt was a game-time decision due to a thigh injury. He ended up playing, but Jerome Ford took 74% of snaps in the first half before exiting in the third quarter with an ankle injury.
    • Pierre Strong got 64% of snaps in the fourth quarter, with six touches to Hunt's three, though it was Hunt who scored the game-winning TD from one yard out (his second short score of the day).
    • Ford had a 69-yard TD run on the opening drive and only five total yards from his other 10 carries. That's been his M.O. so far. He's averaging 4.4 YPC but has the second worst success rate (34.6%) among qualified rushers.
      • ICYWW, Nick Chubb has a career mark of 48.4%, including 57.1% in limited action this year. Obviously nobody expected Ford to be Chubb, but it's been a massive drop-off in terms of snap-to-snap consistency even with Ford providing big plays at a similar rate.
  • WR Donovan Peoples-Jones lost more playing time to Marquise Goodwin than in past weeks. DPJ has 18 targets and 97 yards on 374 snaps (82.7%) this year.

  • RBs Jonathan Taylor and Zack Moss worked in a near-50/50 split for the second straight week, though JT was much more productive in this one with 21 touches for 120 yards and a TD (compared to 19 touches for 62 yards from Moss).
    • Taylor scored from five yards out and had a 6-0 touch advantage over Moss in the red zone (though neither got any goal-line carries).
  • Rookie WR Josh Downs led the team with six targets and scored a sneaky 59-yard TD in the first quarter.
    • The TD never would've happened if not for Downs breaking through a couple would-be tacklers to convert a third down a few plays earlier. Each of his first three receptions, including the long TD, converted a third down.
    • Downs is at 20.1% target share, solidly behind Michael Pittman but way ahead of anyone else on the Colts.
  • TEs Drew Ogletree and Will Mallory split the passing-down snaps that normally go to Kylen Granson, who was inactive with a concussion. Ogletree and Mallory combined for one target on 20 routes.
  • QB Gardner Minshew has to be the first QB to finish with more than 13 YPA and multiple rushing touchdowns in a loss. He also had some really bad plays, including a lost fumble recovered for a TD and an underthrown pass to Michael Pittman that ended up costing the Colts four points.

  • RB Bijan Robinson was sick and didn't play much, opening the door for Cordarrelle Patterson to handle a significant role for the first time this year.
    • Tyler Allgeier got 24 of the 35 RB opportunities, but he's still struggling to pick up yards on the ground. He has the 11th most carries (96) in the league, yet ranks 24th in rushing yards (301). His 3.1 YPC is the fifth worst mark among qualified rushers.
  • WR Van Jefferson replaced Mack Hollins as the No. 2 receiver, getting 16 routes (62%) and two targets.
  • This was Kyle Pitts' third straight game with snap share in the 50s and route share in the 60s or 70s. Fantasy managers would like to see him on the field more, but the bigger issue IMO is that he's been targeted on only 21.6% of routes... not a bad number by most standards, just bad for a top-10 pick in an offense with poor receiving depth.

  • TE Cade Otton has been in an every-down role all year, but this was just his second game with more than four targets.
  • WR Trey Palmer was way ahead of Deven Thompkins for snaps/routes as the third receiver, but the latter actually saw one more target.
  • RB Rachaad White continues to play about three-fourths of snaps and score most of his points through the air. Tampa should try to trade for Zack Moss and put White in more of a passing-down role.
  • WR Mike Evans got three targets in the end zone, scoring one TD.
    • Evans and Chris Godwin both have five end-zone targets this year, with the latter catching two and the former none (Godwin has yet to score a TD, i.e., buy low).

  • TE Hunter Henry played through an ankle injury but lost more work to Mike Gesicki and Pharaoh Brown for a second straight week. I'm not sure how much of that is because of the ankle, but Henry fell off before the injury anyway.
  • WR Kendrick Bourne led the Patriots in routes, targets and receiving yards for a second straight week.
    • Demario Douglas was second among the WRs in snaps, routes, targets and yards.
      • Douglas missed the previous game with a concussion. As did JuJu Smith-Schuster, who also missed this one.
      • Douglas didn't play at all in 12 personnel but took 36 of 36 snaps in 11 personnel. If that continues, he'll likely benefit from negative game script (even though he did well in positive game script this past Sunday).
  • RB Ezekiel Elliott got seven targets in the season opener and has 10 total in six games since. He's getting about half the rushing work at this point (more Sunday) but Rhamondre Stevenson is dominating the RB targets the way many expected pre-season.

  • Dan Campbell foolishly played RB Jahmyr Gibbs and WR Amon-Ra St. Brown to the very end, which I very much appreciated for fantasy purposes. Everyone loves the "tough guy" stuff, until they don't. Leaving those guys in was an adult temper tantrum, IMO.
    • Gibbs played 86% of snaps overall and got 21 of the 25 RB opportunities (with Craig Reynolds taking the other four).
      • Worth noting that Reynolds was listed as questionable due to hamstring and toe injuries, with Campbell suggesting beforehand that the backup RB wouldn't be at full strength (though he looked fine on his limited touches)
  • WR Jameson Williams got 46% of snaps and 46% of routes, finishing without a catch on six targets (tied for third most on the team).
  • TE Sam LaPorta played 80% of snaps before the fourth quarter. I'm not sure why the Lions eased up on him but not ARSB and Gibbs. Maybe because LaPorta has been playing through a calf injury... except that Gibbs also was recently injured (he missed the past two games with a hamstring issue).

  • WR Zay Flowers was a near-every-down player again while Odell Beckham, Nelson Agholor and Rashod Bateman rotated.
    • OBJ drew seven targets on 16 routes.
    • Agholor scored a TD on a play where Lamar Jackson bought about six extra seconds, but that was Agholor's only target of the day.
  • RB Keaton Mitchell got his first NFL snaps but left with a hamstring injury after one touch.
  • RB Gus Edwards got 51% of snaps and 15 of the 21 RB opportunities, including a two-yard TD and an 80-yard catch on a busted play.
  • TE Mark Andrews missed Week 1. If we don't count that game, his target share is 22.7%, not far behind Flowers' 25.0%
    • Nobody else is above 11.9% (Agholor) since Week 1, though it's worth noting that Beckham and Bateman also have missed time.
    • Beckham has seen 15.8% of the targets the past three weeks since returning from a foot injury (26.3% for Flowers, 23.2% for Andrews).
  • Justice Hill got nearly half the snaps but only five touches. He's been more efficient than Edwards with his carries, but that's partially due to the type of carries they are getting / situations they are getting them in.
  • It's early, but MVP is shaping up as a two-horse race between Lamar Jackson and Patrick Mahomes. FWIW, I'm a huge Ravens fan and would pick Mahomes without hesitation.

    • Brian Robinson is on the hot seat, and even if he keeps his starting job there's not much upside with Rodriguez taking some of the carries and Antonio Gibson getting most of the routes still. Robinson did score another short TD in this one; his only real source of value this year.
  • Jahan Dotson's 4.7 YPT is eighth worst among qualified WRs, and he has more targets (39) than all the guys with inferior marks. He did see eight targets in this one, after getting one the week before.

    • No clue why this happened Week 7 instead of Week 6. Demercado has been better than Keaontay Ingram all year, but Ingram was the lead runner in the first game without James Conner (IR -knee).
    • Ingram technically was active but didn't play any snaps on offense.
  • TEs Trey McBride and Zach Ertz split the snaps and routes right around 50/50 for a second straight game.

  • Jake Bobo took most of the snaps/routes that normally go to DK Metcalf, who was inactive due to hip and rib injuries (the first injury absence of his career).
    • Bobo tied for second on the team in targets and had an incredible TD catch.
    • Jaxon Smith-Njigba drew a team-high seven targets and had his best game yet (4-63-1), but he played only nine of 18 snaps in 12 personnel, splitting time with Bobo (11 of 18).
      • JSN was left wide open for a 28-yard TDout of the slot in the first quarter. It looked like Seattle ran four verts on the play and caught Arizona's safeties off-guard.
  • Kenneth Walker got 29 of the 30 RB opportunities and handled 79% snap share.
  • Noah Fant was targeted just once, but his 69% route share was a season high. Probably a one-week blip there, considering Colby Parkinson and Will Dissly both topped 50% snap share as well.

    • Allen Robinson dipped to 62% of snaps and 48% of routes, with Calvin Austin at 13% and 22%, respectively. They combined for one target.
  • RB Najee Harris finally scored a TD, and it was the game-winner. He had 17 of the 25 RB opportunities in this one, though Jaylen Warren also hit paydirt.
  • TE Conner Heyward was second on the team with 96% route share in the first game after Pat Freiermuth (hamstring) was moved to IR.
    • Heyward drew only three targets and won't be a priority in the offense, but he should at least have deep-league relevance if he's running this many routes.
  • George Pickens had more than one-third of the targets and more than half of the team's air yards. No concerns for him with Johnson returning.

    • Henderson got 42% of snaps on 3rd-and-medium/long, with Freeman taking the other 58%.
    • Henderson had three touches in a row inside the 10-yard line in the third quarter, culminating in a one-yard TD.
    • Henderson and Freeman got one carry apiece on 3rd-and-1s. Both converted.
  • WR Puka Nacua outproduced a healthy Cooper Kupp for the first time in their three weeks playing together. Kupp's return hasn't impacted Nacua's target share, which continues to sit around one-third of the team total.
    • They're getting around two-thirds of the team total each week a level of passing-game concentration that we previously haven't seen in the modern NFL (if it holds).
  • Tutu Atwell's lone catch was a 31-yard TD late in the second quarter on a play where Matthew Stafford just lobbed the ball up into a crowd near the end zone. It was probably intended for Kupp.

  • Palmer has four straight games with either seven or eight targets, recording at least three catches, 60 yards and 10.0 PPR points each time.
    • Palmer's aDOT is up to 13.6, a dramatic increase from 8.7 last year. Which makes sense for a guy who was lauded for his size/speed coming out of college and now plays with QB Justin Herbert. The Kellen Moore offense may be a disappointment overall but at least seems to have figured out how to use Palmer better.
  • TE Gerald Everett missed the fourth quarter with a quad injury, leaving Stone Smartt to play 65% of snaps while Donald Parham got the other 35% (the Chargers were strictly using 11 personnel at that point whilst playing from behind).

  • WR Rashee Rice finished with season highs for snap share (61%), target share (65%) and fantasy points (17.0 PPR).
    • That said, the work that normally goes to Justin Watson (elbow - inactive) was spread around to multiple players, unsurprisingly. MVS also played a bit more than usual, and also had his best game of the season (thanks mostly to a distance score... once his specialty).
    • Skyy Moore was third among the WRs in routes but still can't find his way to more than three or four targets in a game.
  • RB Isiah Pacheco had a late receiving TD to salvage his fantasy day. His role was about the same as ever, featuring 17 of the team's 24 RB opportunities.
  • Travis Kelce's lone incomplete target wasn't categorized as a drop, but the ball hit his hands in tight coverage and he clearly was disappointed with himself after the play.
    • It ended a streak of 29 consecutive passes to Kelce that were completed. Incredible. And yet another testament to Taylor Swift and Brittany Mahomes, whose #inspirational friendship now includes a really, really cool handshake.
  • Mecole Hardman ran seven routes and was targeted three times in his return to K.C.

  • WR Christian Watson injured his knee on Green Bay's final drive and limped off the field to be evaluated by team doctors. He has a history of right knee and hamstring injuries.
  • WR Jayden Reed missed part of the game with a calf injury but returned and caught a go-ahead TD off a deflection. He should get more snaps/routes/targets if Watson ends up missing time.
  • WR Romeo Doubs leads the NFL with eight end-zone targets this year.
  • RB AJ Dillon got more snaps and carries than Aaron Jones in Jones' return from a hamstring injury.
    • Emanuel Wilson got four opportunities too, on top of Dillon's 17 and Jones' 13.
  • Brutal injury game for Green Bay, with the pass catchers and secondary especially hard hit. And that's on top of top corner Jaire Alexander (back) being inactive.

  • RB Javonte Williams topped 50% snap share for the first time this season, taking 15 of the 22 RB carries and four of the nine targets.
  • S Kareem Jackson was ejected for the second time this season and has already been fined four times for illegal hits. He may now be suspended.
  • WR Marvin Mims played a little more, but it was still a split of the No. 3 receiver role and he finished with one incomplete target and a loss of 11 on one carry.
    • The 47% route share was up from 27% in the previous game, with his snap share rising from 22% to 31%.
  • WRs Courtland Sutton and Jerry Jeudy combined to catch all 11 of their targets against a banged-up Packers secondary.

  • Jaylen Waddle hurt his back in the second quarter and missed a chunk of the game but then came back after halftime and had a flurry of catches to finish with a decent stat line.
    • He was noticeably struggling by the end of the game, however.
  • Jeff Wilson was merely the No. 3 RB in his season debut.
  • The Eagles stopped Raheem Mostert for negative yardage at least twice, and shut him down apart from one long run.
    • Mostert got 12 of the 17 RB opportunities.

  • The split between D'Andre Swift and Kenneth Gainwell hasn't changed the past month. Gainwell had a nice three-yard TD run Sunday night but was otherwise quiet.
  • WR DeVonta Smith looked better this week but AJ Brown hogged the targets again and dominated.
  • Julio Jones took 10 routes away from Olamide Zaccheaus in his Eagles debut, catching his lone target for three yards.

  • Christian McCaffrey played every snap and scored both of San Francisco's touchdowns. He was listed as questionable with an abdomen injury before the game.
  • Deebo Samuel (shoulder) was inactive and is expected to miss at least one more game.
  • LT Trent Williams (ankle) didn't play. We probably shouldn't be surprised that the Niners offense is nothing special without Williams and Samuel, though it still has star power via Kittle and McCaffrey.

  • Cam Akers got his most snaps and carries since joining the Vikings, and essentially split snaps 50/50 with Alexander Mattison after the first couple drives.
    • Mattison took five carries on the first two drives, including gains of 19 and 13 yards, but from that point on Akers had a 10-3 advantage in carries.
  • Jordan Addison had by far the best game of his young career, despite missing some snaps due to cramping.
  • T.J. Hockenson briefly exited with a foot injury and returned after a snap or two.
