2026 Fantasy Outlook
Burns made quick work of his very first full-season assignment in 2025, earning a promotion from High-A to Double-A after three starts and ultimately jumping three levels in 11 weeks, debuting June 24 against the Yankees. He debuted less than a full calendar year after being drafted by the Reds as the No. 2 overall pick out of Wake Forest. The right-hander more than held his own in his first outing but then managed to record just one out against the Red Sox in his second career start. Showcasing elite fastball velocity and a big swing-and-miss slider (43.7 Whiff%), Burns recorded double-digit strikeouts four times in the span of five starts from July 11 to Aug. 8 before landing on the injured list with a right elbow flexor strain. Upon his return in September, Burns worked exclusively out of the bullpen, totaling nine innings across five relief appearances. He made another appearance out of the bullpen in the wild-card round. After a full offseason of rest, Burns is expected to re-enter the Cincinnati rotation in 2026. Read Past Outlooks
Rebounds from tough start
Burns settled for a no-decision Thursday against the Giants, allowing no runs on two hits and one walk while striking out four over six innings.
Analysis
After a tough start last time out -- in which Burns surrendered five runs to the Angels -- the young hurler recaptured the dominant form he showcased in his first two starts of the year. Aside from the 5.1 frames pitched against the Angels, the 23-year-old has otherwise allowed just one run and struck out 20 batters in 17 innings. All told, he still has a strong 2.42 ERA and 1.07 WHIP on the season. His next scheduled outing pits him against the Rays, which rank fourth in MLB with a .266 team batting average.

2025 Fantasy Outlook
Burns was touching triple digits as an amateur but made it to campus at Tennessee and eventually transferred to Wake Forest for his junior season before the Reds selected him second overall in 2024. He logged a 7.7 percent walk rate as a junior, which is a mark in line with a typical premium college starting pitching prospect, and his elite 48.8 percent strikeout rate just barely edged out Hagen Smith, whom the White Sox selected fifth overall. Burns hasn't had any notable arm injuries or surgeries, which is a bit surprising given how long he's been throwing this hard. In addition to his fairly straight upper-90s fastball (touches 102 mph), Burns has a monster upper-80s slider that is one of the best pitches in the class. His curveball is also a plus pitch, and his seldom-used changeup will flash plus. There's a chance big-league hitters are able to tag his fastball more often than its velocity would portend, but there are no obvious concerns here beyond the fact that pitchers who throw this hard often need Tommy John surgery early in their careers. He didn't pitch in official games after signing and should spend the bulk of 2025 in the upper levels of the minors.
