Rest-of-Season Projections
2026 Fantasy Outlook
Abel will be in contention for a starting rotation spot with the Twins after showing some promise last season. Abel has not lived up to his No. 15 overall draft pick selection in 2020 as before last season he had unimpressive ERAs and troubling walk rates (4.76 ERA the previous two seasons in Triple-A and Double-A with Philly). Able improved to begin the season at Triple-A with a 2.31 ERA, a 28.6% K% and career-best 10.1% BB% in 12 starts. He then dazzled in his first start in the majors with six scoreless innings with nine strikeouts and no walks. He struggled thereafter by allowing 14 earned runs in 19 innings with a 12:9 K:BB ratio. He was then traded to Minnesota where he continued to impress in the minors with a 1.85 ERA, 35.5% K% and 8.6% BB% in five starts. He then struggled in the majors again with the Twins giving up 13 earned runs in 14 innings. Abel has good velocity with a 96.2 mph average fastball that helps generate above-average strikeout rates (28.6% in Triple-A last year). His control is the main issue as he's never had a walk rate below 9% at at any level, but he did lower that rate at both levels last season. If he can continue to improve his control, he could win a rotation spot as early as this spring. Read Past Outlooks
Unofficially wins rotation spot
Abel is poised to begin the season in Minnesota's starting rotation after Zebby Matthews was optioned to Triple-A St. Paul on Friday, Aaron Gleeman of The Athletic reports.
Analysis
The Twins have yet to announce their official rotation plans, but Abel has apparently won the battle for the No. 5 spot. The 24-year-old was dominant during spring training with a 1.35 ERA, 0.75 WHIP and 17:1 K:BB across 13.1 innings. Abel struggled to a 6.23 ERA in 10 appearances between the Phillies and Twins in his first taste of the majors last season, but he should find more success if he's able to keep limiting free passes, as he's had a walk rate of at least nine percent at every professional level.

Abel's prospect stock has trended down each year since he was selected No. 15 overall in 2020. Initially he was seen as a potential No. 1 pitching prospect type, but he has never posted a walk rate below 10 percent and his stuff has stagnated. Abel logged a 6.46 ERA, 1.81 WHIP and a 117:78 K:BB in 108.2 innings at Triple-A last season and is unlikely to be more than an up-and-down arm in 2025. The Phillies added him to the 40-man roster, which is the natural thing to do with a pitcher you've invested this much in, but Abel's name value and pedigree are doing all of the lifting with regards to any remaining perceived dynasty value.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Possible trade chip?
The Phillies could consider trading Abel to improve the major-league roster this summer, reports Adam Aaronson of The Philly Voice.
Analysis
Philadelphia has been reluctant to part with top prospects in recent years, but 2024 could be different with the club holding the best record in the National League. Abel has struggled at the Triple-A level this season with a 6.31 ERA, 1.86 WHIP and 39:33 K:BB across 45.2 innings, so the Phillies wouldn't be selling high, but the 22-year-old could still turn things around ahead of the trade deadline.
