Schneider signed a one-year, $5.5 million contract with the Rangers on Monday, Vince Z. Mercogliano of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Schneider was a restricted free agent to begin the offseason, but he'll avoid arbitration with the Rangers by agreeing to his one-year deal. He appeared in all 82 regular-season games last year, recording two goals, 16 assists, 163 hits, 140 blocked shots and 26 PIM while averaging 20:27 of ice time.

A first-round pick in 2019, Schneider’s offensive production has increased in each of his first four seasons in the NHL. The defenseman notched six goals, 21 points, 95 shots on goal, 145 blocked shots, 146 hits and a plus-9 rating over 80 appearances last season. The 23-year-old has been durable so far in his four-year career, having missed just three games over the last three years, and his role continues to grow -- his average ice time increased from 15:54 in 2023-24 to 17:52 this past campaign. While he missed the last two games of 2024-25 due to a torn labrum, Schneider is expected to be ready for the start of 2025-26. Set to be an RFA in 2026-27, a 30-point season could be in store for the Saskatchewan native if he continues his upward trajectory, and he should continue to be a steady source of blocked shots and hits.
After missing just one regular-season game over the past two seasons, Schneider cashed in this offseason to the tune of a two-year, $4.4 million contract with the Rangers this summer. Offensively, the blueliner is limited at best, having failed to reach the 20-point threshold in his three-year NHL career. The shutdown defenseman doesn't rack up a lot of PIM, recording just 16 minutes in each of the previous two seasons, despite dishing out plenty of hits (167) while also averaging a mere 15:54 of ice time during the 2023-24 campaign. In scoring-heavy formats, Schneider is a poor option but could offer more in leagues that utilize those ancillary stats.
Schneider logged his first full NHL campaign last year, racking up 18 points, 147 hits and 130 blocked shots while averaging 15:43 of ice time per game over 81 contests. He saw the bulk of his minutes on the third pairing, as the Rangers rolled with an established top four that left him little room to advance. Schneider is likely to remain in a similar role in 2023-24, so there's not a lot of growth to be expected for the 19th overall pick from the 2020 draft. His physical play may earn him some interest in deeper fantasy formats, but no one should expect him to challenge for much more than 20 points.
Schneider made his NHL debut in January and scored a goal in his first game. He added just one more tally and 10 helpers in 42 additional regular-season games, but he was a regular for the Rangers the rest of the way, including playing in all 20 of the club's postseason contests. Schneider is a throwback. He's a stay-at-home, physical defender that is unlikely to ever top 25-30 points in a single season. Of course, Schneider will play this entire season at age 21, so perhaps we'll see some improvement in that area. He'll again be a regular for the Rangers in 2022-23.
