With September call-ups, you can find some very good value on under-priced former minor leaguers, though their playing time is inconsistent.
Pitcher:
Luis Severino ($5,750): This price on the righty is too good to pass up. Severino, as proven by his price on the other DFS sites, is an upper echelon pitcher. His Fantasy Aces point-totals over his last three starts read 13.00, 15.25, 15.25. The rookie sports a great K/9 and the ability to reach elite point totals if he can simply control his walks. The right-handed heavy lineup for Tampa Bay is a favorable matchup as well.
Jacob deGrom ($7,900): Spare a poor outing against the oddly offensively resurgent Phillies, deGrom has shown the ability to rack up a lot of strikeouts while allowing very few runs. He is coming off a solid 10-K, two-run outing against the Red Sox (a team that regularly is quite tough to strikeout). Vegas bolsters deGrom that much more by making the Mets large favorites favorites with a low over/under of seven. If I'm going to pay up for a pitcher Friday night, this is the direction I'm going.
Joe Kelly ($5,650): After a season of bleak to abysmal outings, Kelly has now recorded five consecutive starts scoring at least 13.25 fantasy points. It's an anomaly, but is it possible the hard throwing right-hander is finally figuring it out? Seems hard to believe, but I'll bite in the discount-obliging SalaryPro format.
Catcher:
Buster Posey ($5,500): Rarely do I want to pay up for catcher but with the value I can find in pitching and the outfield Friday night, I can afford it. It's partly Posey, but mostly Coors Field. With the wind projected to be blowing straight out to centerfield, it could be one of those extreme offensive nights in Denver.
1B/3B:
Joey Votto ($5,750): Since the All-Star break, Votto seemingly can do no wrong. His OBP is .576 during that time and he is getting on base well over half of the time. The next closest OBP is .100 points lower.
Kyle Seager ($5,100): Seager has been hot on his own right recently, no doubt. But, is it a bad narrative to read in some extra initiative coming from the fact that his brother was just called up by the Dodgers?
2B/SS:
Ketel Marte ($3,650): You won't get Marte this cheap through other outlets. Why? He gives you a solid middle infielder batting in the leadoff position against a mediocre pitcher. He has some base stealing ability to boot.
Matt Duffy ($4,850): Duffy isn't having a great time at the plate of late, but Coors Field and a middle infield position has me buying.
Outfield:
Colby Rasmus ($4,350): With Rasmus, you are basically boom-or-bust on a home run. At home against the low-tier righty Mike Pelfrey, I like his chances.
Jonny Gomes ($4,000): The Royals have been spitting hot fire at the plate the last couple nights, and Gomes gives cheap exposure to that heat against the struggling John Danks.
Marlon Byrd ($4,850): The Giants invested in Byrd for his ability to hit home runs. Friday night gives us Byrd against a lefty in Coors Field. I'm buying.
