2026 Fantasy Outlook
Mahomes’ 2025 campaign was cut short by a Week 15 ACL/LCL tear that ended a major bounce back in fantasy. After finishing 2024 as QB12, he was QB11 last year even though he played only 14 games, ranking QB4 in per-game scoring. His was a two-pronged improvement. First, Mahomes rushed for 422 yards and five touchdowns, both career highs. Second, he threw deep more often than he had in recent years -- a five-year-high 11.4 percent of his attempts went at least 20 yards downfield (8th). His average target depth rose to 7.8 yards, also a five-year high, resulting in 7.1 YPA, a three-year high. The rushing production already figured to regress this year, and that's now a near-guarantee after Mahomes injured his knee and the Chiefs signed RB Kenneth Walker. With fewer rush attempts and extra risk for missed games, Mahomes will need to stretch the field even more often (and more successfully) in order to outperform even his reduced ADP. The dink-and-dunk approach might work fine for Kansas City, but it won't add up for fantasy managers when Mahomes isn't scrambling and doesn't have an elite group of pass catchers. It's also not certain he'll be ready for Week 1, though both Mahomes and the Chiefs have made it clear that's the goal. To the surprise of many, the Chiefs haven't upgraded Mahomes' receiving weapons, instead focusing on their backfield and defense this offseason. Rashee Rice is highly effective on screens and other short passes, but he still hasn't been used much downfield -- an area where Xavier Worthy's 4.22 speed was supposed to help (still waiting). The Chiefs otherwise retained TE Travis Kelce and part-time deep threat Tyquan Thornton, ensuring that they have pass catchers with varied skillsets, if nothing else. Betting against Mahomes in real life has never been wise, but fantasy has been more of a mixed bag in recent years, even without the challenge of an ACL rehab. Read Past Outlooks

Chiefs add two years to contract
Mahomes (ACL) and Kansas City agreed to terms Wednesday on a deal that amends two additions years to his contract, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Mahomes' new deal keeps him under contract with the Chiefs through the 2033 season and carries a total value of $504.75 million, providing the 30-year-old quarterback an average salary of $64 million per season as Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. Per Pete Sweeney of the Kansas City Star, Mahomes continued to participate in 7-on-7 drills at mandatory minicamp this week while rehabbing from a torn ACL and LCL suffered in Week 15 of last season, but he remained sidelined during 11-on-11 drills. It remains to be seen when Mahomes will be cleared to resume handling full-team reps, but by all accounts his offseason recovery continues to proceed well on schedule.

Considering his QB2 ADP, Mahomes was one of the biggest fantasy busts at the position last season. He finished at a career-low QB12, but that doesn't do justice to the situation. In the first six games, he had a 6:8 TD:INT and averaged less than 14 fantasy points per game, 24th among QBs. He recovered to post a 20:3 TD:INT in his last 10 games, but even in that span he had five games with no more than 16 fantasy points. Only four times all season did he top 20 points. A lack of downfield passing made fantasy life tough for Mahomes. Just 7.1 percent of his attempts traveled beyond 20 yards, 33rd of 36 qualified QBs. Only 26.0 percent even went past 10 yards (34th), and only Tua Tagovailoa threw behind the line of scrimmage at a higher rate than Mahomes (26.9 percent). The result was a career-low 6.3-yard average target depth (34th) and a career-low 6.8 YPA (26th). In fairness, Mahomes' options were limited. Rashee Rice and Hollywood Brown combined for six games played; rookie Xavier Worthy had one of the highest rates in the league for WR screens; and 35-year-old Travis Kelce doesn't get up the seam like he used to. The pass catchers should be better this season, but if the majority of Mahomes' attempts are going to come within five yards of the line of scrimmage, he needs to get much more efficient, i.e., a higher completion rate (67.5, 10th) and more yards per completion (10.0, 31st), or he needs something like 650 attempts. Otherwise, it's hard to see how he gets back in the Top 5 of fantasy QBs.
