Gustav Forsling

Gustav Forsling

28-Year-Old DefensemanD
Florida Panthers
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Forsling finished ninth in Norris Trophy voting with one writer even placing him second, but from a fantasy perspective, Forsling is great, but not elite. The Swedish defenseman had 10 goals, 39 points, 43 PIM, 102 blocks and 111 hits in 79 regular-season contests with Florida in 2023-24. His most noteworthy statistic was his plus-56 rating, which was not only the best in the NHL, but 10 better than any other player. It certainly helped that he was playing for the world-class Panthers, and he should be a fantastic asset in terms of plus/minus in 2024-25 under similar circumstances. Beyond that, he helps in a lot of other categories without standing out in any of them. He won't be confused for a blueliner like Cale Makar or Adam Fox, but the 28-year-old Forsling's versatility is certainly worth something. Read Past Outlooks

Forsling notched two assists and four shots on goal in Thursday's 4-1 win over the Red Wings.
ANALYSIS
Forsling has two goals and six helpers over his last 11 contests. The defenseman had a hand in second-period tallies by Evan Rodrigues (on the power play) and Mackie Samoskevich. That power-play helper was Forsling's first contribution with the man advantage all season, though he's averaged just 16 seconds of ice time per game in that situation. Overall, the blueliner has 30 points, a mark he's reached in four straight seasons, while adding 193 shots on net, 86 blocked shots, 81 hits and a plus-33 rating over 78 appearances.

Aaron Ekblad and Brandon Montour got most of the hype in 2022-23, but Forsling was also excellent with a career year of 13 goals, 28 assists, 209 shots on goal and 106 blocked shots over 82 games. The defenseman will have a chance to play an even larger role early in 2023-24, as both Ekblad and Montour will likely miss time with shoulder injuries sustained during the Panthers' playoff run. That means Forsling could get time as a power-play quarterback and on the top pairing, making him an attractive sleeper pick going into the campaign, and one that fantasy managers can flip if he starts the year hot.
Forsling finally established himself as a full-time NHL regular a season ago, playing in 71 of Florida's 82 regular season games. He emerged as a key player for Florida, managing 10 goals and 37 points despite the fact he didn't post a single point with the man advantage the entire year. Forsling's 145 shots on goal and 21:13 average time on ice were also both new high-water marks. All that said, Forsling isn't a player to target in fantasy leagues this fall. His lack of power play time combined with his poor hit/block totals mean you can do better to fill out the defensive depth on your roster.
Forsling never found his footing over the course of three seasons with the Blackhawks, but a move to Florida and a permanent role on one of the NHL's best teams has rejuvenated him. Forsling played in every game for the Panthers from March 4 onward, including all of the club's postseason contests. His production was minimal, but Forsling did set career highs in goals (five), assists (12), points (17), plus-minus rating (plus-17), shots on goal (94) and average time on ice (19:57). Florida rewarded Forsling with a three-year, $8 million contract this past summer, which should ensure he'll be a regular for the club for years to come, albeit in a role that isn't exactly conducive to fantasy value.
Forsling was unable to carve out a regular role with the Blackhawks during his three seasons with the organization, totaling eight goals and 27 points in 122 appearances. He'll get a fresh start in Carolina in 2019-20, but will likely once again be splitting time between the AHL and NHL, so there's no reason for fantasy owners to have him on their radar.
Forsling took a big step forward in his development last season, setting career highs in goals (three), points (13), shots on goal (82) and average ice time (19:09) in 41 appearances with the Blackhawks. The Swedish blueliner was fully expected to compete for a spot on the Opening Night roster during training camp, but that will no longer be a possibility, as he was surprisingly forced to undergo wrist surgery in late July which is expected to keep him sidelined until mid-November. Fantasy owners looking for defensive help as the season progresses should keep an eye on Forsling's recovery, but he won't be worth a draft pick in most formats.
Forsling was acquired by the Blackhawks from the Canucks on Jan. 29, 2015. He was a fifth-round selection (126th overall) by Vancouver in the 2014 NHL Draft. He played the 2014-15 season in the Swedish Hockey League.

Extension coming?
DFlorida Panthers
November 16, 2023
Kevin Weekes of ESPN believes the Panthers will work to re-sign Forsling.
ANALYSIS
Forsling is in the final season of his three-year contract that comes with a $2,666,667 annual cap hit. If he doesn't ink an extension with the Panthers, then he'll become an unrestricted free agent this summer. Forsling has established himself as a valuable top-four defenseman with Florida, so it's safe to say he's earned a significant raise. The 27-year-old has two goals, five points, 11 hits and 20 blocks in 15 contests this campaign while averaging 23:53 of ice time.
