Kim began the 2025 season on the injured list with the Rays while recovering from right shoulder surgery. A low back strain put him on the shelf again after 10 games in July and Kim would make a third trip to the IL in August, again due to back trouble, before ending the season in Atlanta as a waiver claim. Overall, Kim slashed just .234/.304/.345 with five homers and six steals in 191 plate appearances between the two stops, his worst showing in the majors since his rookie season with San Diego. Still, Atlanta liked what it saw enough to bring the 30-year-old back on a one-year, $20 million deal to play shortstop for the team in 2026. Durability is a major question mark at this point, but Kim has a few above-average offensive seasons under his belt and reached significant heights as recently as 2023 when he hit 17 homers and stole 38 bases in 152 games. Unfortunately for Kim, he required surgery in January after tearing a tendon in his right middle finger that will out him on the IL until at least mid-May. Read Past Outlooks

Atlanta placed Kim (finger) on its 10-day injured list Wednesday.
Analysis
Kim isn't expected to be ready to make his season debut until at least some point in the first half of May after he required surgery in January to address a torn tendon in his right middle finger. The 30-year-old reported to spring training March 16 to resume taking part in baseball activities, though he has yet to be cleared to resume swinging a bat. Mauricio Dubon is expected to serve as Atlanta's everyday shortstop while Kim is on the shelf.

The Padres decided before this past season to play the defensively-superior Kim at shortstop full-time and shift Xander Bogaerts to second base. Unfortunately, Bogaerts was forced to move back to short in mid-September after Kim suffered a season-ending right shoulder injury which eventually required labrum surgery. Kim's recovery is expected to drag on after Opening Day, and he will enter 2025 with fantasy eligibility only at shortstop on most platforms. A late start to the season and the fact that he's returning from major shoulder surgery could impact his already-middling power. The good news is Kim should remain a nice source of stolen bases when he makes his debut after signing with Tampa Bay, where he'll get a ballpark bump after leaving Petco.
