NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts Series Race Preview

The best racing weekend of the year got off to a terrible start Thursday with the tragic and untimely passing of Kyle Busch. While that will weigh heavily on all race fans hearts, all three NASCAR series races will go forward as planned.

As for a brief update on the O'Reilly Series, Corey Day picked up his second win of the season at Dover. That pushed him up to fourth in the standings, and it also gave him five top-five finishes of the season – tied for third in the Series.  Sam Mayer was the big mover of the week. He entered last weekend on the fringes of the playoffs, but a third-place finish at Dover – his second in the last three weeks – pushed him up three positions into ninth place.

Key Stats at Charlotte Motor Speedway

  • Number of races: 80
  • Winners from pole: 13
  • Winners from top-5 starters: 45
  • Winners from top-10 starters: 60
  • Winners from 21st or lower starters: 6

2024 – Chase Elliott
2023 -  Justin Allgaier
2022 - Josh Berry
2021 – Ty Gibbs
2020 - Kyle Busch
2019 - Tyler Reddick
2018 - Brad Keselowski

Charlotte hosts one of the premier race weekends of the season. While the Cup Series gets all of the attention and is a crown jewel race, the O'Reilly/Xfinity Series still typically draws a very strong field of drivers. Things are a bit more watered down this season, with Connor Zilisch and Ross Chastain being the headline additions, though there is still an infusion of talent that we'll cover in our DFS and Best Bets sections.

Charlotte is known for having multiple racing lanes that promotes passing and opportunities to move up the field, but qualifying has been very important to determine the winner recently. Two of the last 10 winners have qualified 15th or worse, but seven of the remaining eight began in the top five.

There are some interesting options at both the top and bottom ends of the driver pool, but the middle is my favorite place to start. Custer will appear in his third O'Reilly Series race of the season, and he has something of a mixed track record on the surface. However, qualified 36th and managed to move up to seventh at Kansas, a very similar track to Charlotte. His track record at Charlotte is also very strong, making him a key value and my favorite pick of the weekend.

There's a wide range of choices toward the top of the pool. Allgaier doesn't have the best average finish in the last three seasons, but that's influenced by an accident in the 2024 season. He also led 103 laps and finished third and second in the two stages last year. Zilisch and Chastain both have relatively strong track records in the Series this season. Zilisch finished second in the race last season, while Chastain won the Cup race at Charlotte.

Love and Hill are typically best used on superspeedways, but there's a strong case for them this weekend as well. Hill has run toward the top of the field consistently in each of the last three years, while Love has excelled at a few comparable tracks this season – most notably putting up 46.2 DK points at Kansas and 47 DK points at Texas. Sammy Smith is an alternative in a similar price range. He has participated in three races at Charlotte in the O'Reilly Series, finishing 10th and third before struggling in 2025.

Similarly to the top of the field, there are several value/punt options. Each of Sieg, Burton and Clements has strong records at Charlotte, while Sieg has had the best season overall. Using two as in the sample lineup above is a significant risk, but it's not a bad weekend to rely on some of the value available.

Best Bets for the Charbroil 300

Odds via DraftKings Sportsbook as of 12:30 AM ET Saturday

Race WinnerJustin Allgaier (+350), Ross Chastain (+650), Cole Custer (+3000)

Top-Five FinisherCole Custer (+350), Sammy Smith (+400), Austin Hill (+250)

Head-to-Head Matchups

Carson Kvapil (-120) vs. Austin Hill (-110)

Ross Chastain (-115) vs. Corey Day (-115)

DK has tightened up its head-to-head odds in recent weeks, making it a bit more difficult to find edges. However, there are some drivers that seem to be undervalued across multiple categories of bets. Hill, Custer and Smith are three of my favorites to try to capitalize on this weekend. None of those are very realistic race winners – though Custer's extremely long odds to win the race are intriguing – but top-five finishes are within reason. Custer finished seventh in Kansas, despite starting the race in 36th. Meanwhile, Smith has had disappointing results this season but has finished third at Charlotte as recently as 2024.

Corey Day is another interesting decision point. Similar to his pricing in DFS, the market is considering him as one of the favorites to win the race. Considering he's won two of the last three races in the Series, it's hard to rule him out. However, his results at similar tracks to Charlotte have left something to be desired, so I'm generally willing to fade him.
