Antonelli had the upper hand over Mercedes teammate George Russell in qualifying thanks to a power issue for the latter driver in Q3. Antonelli started the race on pole as a result, and he dominated the race for the majority of laps after briefly losing the lead to Lewis Hamilton at the start. After Antonelli reclaimed the lead, he was able to widen his advantage in the middle portions of the race while Hamilton and Russell battled for the final podium position. That allowed Antonelli to ultimately record his first F1 victory by 5.5 seconds.
