Tournament Preview

It didn't take long for Scottie Scheffler to get on the board this Tour season, with the 29-year-old's four-stroke victory at The American Express this past week marking the 20th PGA Tour win of his career, all of which have come since the start of 2022. He's not in the field for the Farmer's Insurance this week; in fact, no one ranked in the top-5 of the OWGR will be at Torrey Pines. It's not like the event will be lacking starpower, but most of this week's attention will center around the return of Brooks Koepka to the PGA.

Koepka was one of the original breakaways from the Tour when LIV Golf debuted in 2022. He was named captain of Smash GC, and the move to LIV -- which came with a shorter schedule and larger financial incentive -- didn't appear to negatively impact his play in 2023, when he finished solo second at The Masters before winning the PGA Championship and making the cut at both the U.S. Open and The Open Championship.

Koepka made the cut at every major in 2024, though he failed to crack the top-25 in any of those events. The 2025 year was a winless one for Koepka, who failed to make the cut in three of four majors (T12 at the U.S. Open) while failing to accrue points in nine of 13 LIV tournaments (including in each of the last six events of the year). He had one year left on his contract with LIV Golf but opted to part ways in late December for family reasons. Less than one month later, Koepka opted into the Returning Member Program, a move that will cost him tens of millions of dollars that he'll lose out due to a five-year exemption from earnings in the Player Equity Program -- one of the conditions of his reinstatement to the Tour. The other three players eligible for the Returning Member Program -- team captains Bryson DeChambeau, Jon Rahm and Cameron Smith -- all appear to be committed to LIV Golf in 2026, though it's worth noting that Patrick Reed, who won the the DP Tour Dubai Desert Classic last week, has yet to finalize his contract with LIV for the upcoming season, which kicks off in Riyadh on February 4.

Koepka is just one of 147 players in the field, so not all the attention will be on him. Harris English returns looking to defend his title, No. 6 ranked Xander Schauffele and No. 10 Justin Rose will both be making their 2026 Tour debuts, while No. 19 Ludvig Aberg will enter the week as the last winner at Torrey Pines South (The Genesis Invitational was moved from Riviera due to the devastating wildfires in the Los Angeles area early last year). We'll be seeing a course rotation for a second consecutive week, though we'll be limited to the North and South Course at Torrey Pines. The players will rotate between the two courses in the first two days of the tournament, and those who make the cut will play solely on the South Course on Saturday and Sunday.

The scoring this week will not be like it was at last week's Amex, which saw the cutline set at 11-under and 17 players finish the tournament 20-under or better. Torrey Pines South is particularly daunting at nearly 7,800 yards, with seven of the 10 par-4s measuring at least 450 yards and two of the four par-3s being 225 yards or longer. Water isn't in play on most holes, but the fairways are narrow and some of the greens are the smallest on the PGA Tour. Distance and accuracy off the tee, along with long iron play, will be the keys to success at Torrey Pines South this week.

Underdog Contest Overview

Underdog hosts drafts every week at three buy-in amounts; The Par 3 at $3, the featured draft at $10, and "The Sandbagger" at $100. Each entrant will be paired up with five other participants and participate in a six-man snake draft of teams made up of six players (36 total selections), with each selection on a 30-second timer. For example, the person lucky enough to get Scheffler with the first overall pick (unless you like to live dangerously), but they'll have to wait until 2.6 and 3.1 to make their next selections. Points are allocated to golfers based on their performance on every hole, with bonus points available for golfers who make consecutive birdies or finish a round bogey free.

First Two Rounds

Patrick Cantlay (2.9 Average Draft Position)

Most people at the 1.1 spot will take Schauffele, but Cantlay is a nice consolation. Cantlay is coming off a T13 finish at The Amex, and he has made the cut in each of his last 10 non-major events (following his T36 outing at The Masters). He has made the cut in two of his last three outings at the FIO, though he finished fifth at The Genesis Invitational last February. Cantlay demonstrated one of the better approach games on the Tour last season, ranking 15th in SG: Approach and 27th in GIR.

Chris Gotterup (4.2 ADP)

Gotterup took a week off following his victory at the Sony Open in the Tour's season debut. It was the third PGA Tour victory of his career and extended his streak of making the cut at Tour events to 13 (including six top-10s). Gotterup finished the 2025 season seventh in driving distance, ninth in SG: Off-the-Tee and in the top-25 in scrambling and GIR. What's promising for the 26-year-old American was his improved putting two weeks ago, as he ranked seventh in the field in SG: Putting and second in putts per GIR.

Michael Thorbjornsen (10.7 ADP)

Thorbjornsen missed the cut at The American Express last week, and while he didn't make the weekend at last year's FIO, the Torrey Pines South course suits the 24-year-old. He led the Tour last year in GIR percentage and total driving, ranked in the top-10 in driving distance and SG: Off the Tee and in the top-third in driving accuracy and SG: Tee-to-Green.

Jake Knapp (12.6 ADP)

Knapp is coming off a T11 finish at the Sony Open, when he finished 10th in SG: Putting and 19th in SG: Off-the-Tee. During the 2025 Tour season, he ranked fourth in par-5 scoring, 14th in SG: Putting, 16th in driving distance and par-4 scoring and top-50 in SG: Off the Tee. Knapp finished in a three-way tie for third at the FIO two years ago before logging a T32 in 2025.

Middle-Round Value

Nicolai Hojgaard (15.3 ADP)

Also making his debut this week is Hojgaard, who logged four top-15 finishes over his last five Tour events in 2025 (including a T4 performance at the Genesis Scottish Open in July). He had the third-longest driving distance on the Tour last year and finished 11th in SG: Approach, 18th in Approaches from within 200 yards and 20th in GIR. Hojgaard made his Farmers Insurance Open debut in 2024, when he finished solo second and one stroke back of winner Matthieu Pavon.

Pierceson Coody (20.6 ADP)

Coody has opened the 2026 Tour season nicely with back-to-back top-20 finishes. Though he was middle of the pack in SG: Off-the-Tee over those first two tournaments, he led the PGA Tour in that category in 2025 while ranking third in total driving, fourth in GIR and 17th in SG: Tee-to-Green. Coody's putting game has been better to start the season and he'll look to make the cut for the first time in three attempts at the FIO.

Justin Rose (26.1 ADP)

Rose missed the cut at The Amex last week, but the No. 10 ranked golfer in the world has found success at the Farmers Insurance Open, winning the event in 2019 while finishing in the top-10 on three other occasions. He ended the 2025 Tour season strongly by finishing in the top-30 in each of his final six outings, including a playoff win at the FedEx St. Jude Championship in August.

Late-Round Targets

Sami Valimaki (30.2 ADP)

Valimaki also missed the cut at The American Express last week, but the Fin has made the cut in each of his two outings at the FIO, including a T15 finish in 2025. He's had his struggles off the tee, but he was far better in that category last week and ranked in the top-20 on the Tour last season in SG: Putting and SG: Approach.

Garrick Higgo (32.2 ADP)

The 26-year-old South African will make his first PGA Tour appearance of 2026 this weekend. He finished T7-2-T4-T4 over his final four Tour events in 2025 and ended the year ranked second in par-4 scoring, sixth in SG: Putting, eighth in GIR and 19th in driving distance.

Max McGreevy (34.4 ADP)

McGreevy is coming off a T27 finish at The American Express last week, and he has made the cut in six of his last seven Tour events (including T3 at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship and solo third at The RSM Classic, both in November). He finished the 2025 Tour season ranked 11th in driving accuracy, 20th in SG: Off-the-Tee and 22nd in par-5 scoring.

Davis Thompson (34.8 ADP)

Thompson has made the cut in two of his last three outings at Torrey Pines South, including a T13 finish at The Genesis Invitational in February of 2025. He finished 17th last season in SG: Off-the-Tee and 24th in total driving.

Rico Hoey (35.6 ADP)

Hoey withdrew from last week's Amex after the first round, which broke his streak of made cuts at Tour events at six dating back to last season (which started with a T4 and solo second at the Baycurrent Classic and Bank of Utah Championship, respectively). Putting has been the 30-year-old's kryptonite, but he finished the 2025 Tour season ranked second in total driving and GIR, third in SG: Off-the-Tee, eighth in SG: Approach the Green and 15th in Approaches from beyond 200 yards.
