The Last Dance, RotoWire Edition

The Last Dance, RotoWire Edition

If you're watching ESPN's "The Last Dance" that chronicles the 1997-98 season of the Chicago Bulls, you may be wondering what it would have been like to follow the team through the present day lens of social media and the Internet.

Well, RotoWire was around during that season. It was our first year of covering the NBA with the web site (then RotoNews) having launched the first player notes in February

For the trip down memory lane, we put together a page showing all the player notes for the '97-'98 Bulls from the 1997 offseason to the start of the next season (which wasn't until early 1999 due to a labor dispute).

That era of the web and fantasy basketball coverage was certainly different. RotoWire's updates had a lot more snark and a lot less substantive analysis. There are also far fewer player updates per player per season than today. However, at the time the amount of player news that RotoWire generated was revolutionary and quickly attracted a large audience. Where else could you find the injury status of Bill Wennington if you didn't live in Chicago and subscribe to a local newspaper? (you really could not).

It should serve as a fun accompaniment to the documentary as you can see how we tracked the injuries and player movement at the time.
