Rest-of-Season Projections
2026 Fantasy Outlook
Defense is Rafaela's greatest strength as a player. He won the Gold Glove in center field in 2025 while also making 24 appearances (19 starts) at second base, accommodating as the Red Sox made room for others between the outfield and DH. While Rafaela showed improvement with his strikeout rate last season, the quality of the contact was lacking. He took a step forward overall with a season that was propped up by two months in the middle of the campaign, though he was still nine percent worse than league average by wRC+. Severely lacking in terms of OBP, he chips in enough power and speed to clear the low offensive bar provided by his excellent defense at a premium position. The 25-year-old now has his first 15-20 season and nearly did it the year prior, falling one steal shy of 20 in 2024. Expected to focus on center field in 2026, Rafaela offers volume with modest rate stats. Read Past Outlooks

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2025
2024
2023
Last spring, Red Sox manager Alex Cora stated that Rafaela would make the Opening Day roster only if he earned an everyday job in the outfield. Injuries to multiple infielders softened Cora's stance, and then Rafaela's .896 OPS in the spring made the decision easy. Rafaela ended up missing only 10 games, seven in September. He doesn't hit the ball hard, and his plate discipline is poor. However, Rafaela is just 24 years old and plays Gold Glove-level defense in center field while being able to fill in as a middle infielder. Rafaela's athleticism buys him time to improve on a 31st percentile hard-hit rate, 46th percentile barrel rate and 26.4 percent strikeout rate. The hand-eye coordination possessed by elite defenders often translates to the batter's box. Rafaela has the physical tools and opportunity, and now it's up to him to translate them to better quality of contact.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Shortlisted for Gold Glove
Rafaela is one of three center fielders nominated to win the 2025 Gold Glove Award in the American League, according to MLB.com.
Analysis
Rafaela is widely considered to be one of the best center fielders in MLB, so it's not surprising to see him being shortlisted for the Gold Glove. The other finalists for the Gold Glove in center field are Kyle Isbel and Julio Rodriguez. Rafaela had a breakout season on offense, hitting 16 homers and stealing 20 bases with a .709 OPS over 156 regular-season games, but where he really shines is with his glove. His fielding run value of plus-22 was the best mark in the American League and second in all of baseball.
