Closer Watch

Boston – Junichi Tazawa stepped into the closer's role for Koji Uehara, who is out for the rest of the season, and Tazawa promptly blew his first opportunity Tuesday. Tazawa surrendered a run on two hits with a wild pitch before the Red Sox lost in extra innings. Jean Machi and Alexei Ogando could also figure in the closing mix.

Chicago Cubs – The Cubs shook things up evenmore, turning to James Russell to close out Tuesday's game. Hector Rondon and Jason Motte were left on the bench, with Pedro Strop working the eighth inning. Rondon still seems to be the best bet going forward, but it is somewhat of a mystery why Russell was called upon.

Tampa Bay – Xavier Cedeno notched Tuesday's save, with Brad Boxberger and Jake McGee on the bench. Cedeno faced left-handed hitters Nick Markakis and A.J. Pierzynski, with switch-hitter Nick Swisher on deck before Pierzynski grounded into a double play. The Rays may let Cedeno take the lead against left-handed hitters, even in save situations.

Recommended Pickup

Chris Bassitt, P, OAK – The Athletics have a pitcher they have pulled from out of nowhere. Bassitt now has a 2.48 ERA and 1.05 WHIP after dominating the Astros Sunday, a game in which he allowed one run in 6.2 innings with 10 strikeouts. Bassitt tossed seven shutout innings in his previous start and he has a quality start five turns in a row. Bassitt had a 3.65 ERA and 1.13 with just over a strikeout per inning at Triple-A in 13 appearances. It looks like Bassitt has earned a secure rotation spot going forward.
