Transaction Analysis: Deadline Deals Recap

Here's a look at the transactions this week that had the most significant fantasy impact.

Blue Jays

Adam Lind, 1B - placed on the 15-day DL (lower back)
David Cooper, 1B - recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas

Impact: After a terrible start to the season and a demotion to the minors, Lind appeared to be finally getting his season back on track. Since his return to the major league roster near the end of June, Lind has hit .288 with five home runs and 16 RBI in 24 games. He'll miss a couple of weeks with tightness in his lower back and should be ready to return to the field after the minimum 15 days. Cooper hit .292 with two home runs and six RBI in 24 games with the Blue Jays earlier in the year. He has below-average power for a first baseman, so he's probably best avoided in most mixed leagues.

Braves

Paul Maholm, LHP - acquired with OF Reed Johnson and cash from Chicago Cubs for RHPs Jaye Chapman and Arodys Vizcaino
Jair Jurrjens, RHP - placed on the 15-day DL (groin)
Jose Constanza, OF - optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett

Impact: In an effort to strengthen their rotation and bench over the final couple months of the season, the Braves picked up key pieces from the Cubs on Monday. The 30-year-old Maholm joins the team with a career 4.30 ERA. However, he's done considerably better than that in Chicago this year, going 9-6 with a 3.74 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP. Reed Johnson hit .309 in 111 games in a part-time role with the Cubs last year and followed that by hitting .302 in 76 games in 2012. He should see a decent number of at-bats against lefties with the Braves but is unlikely to help a fantasy team in any of the counting stats. Chapman has yet to appear in a major league game, and Vizcaino was 1-1 with a 4.67 ERA in 17 relief appearances with Atlanta last year. Jurrjens is on the shelf with a groin strain, leaving behind an ugly 6.89 ERA over 10 starts and one relief appearance. Constanza posted an ugly .472 OPS over 15 games with Atlanta. Chris Volstad was called up by the Cubs to fill one of the two rotation spots that were left empty by the departures of Maholm and Ryan Dempster. He's 0-7 with an ERA of 7.94 over nine starts and has given up at least four earned runs in each of his last seven starts. He's, of course, best avoided in pretty much any fantasy format at this time. Justin Germano will get at least another turn in the rotation, and Matt Garza is expected to be activated from the DL on Aug. 7.

Tommy Hanson, RHP - placed on the 15-day DL (lower back)
Cory Gearrin, RHP - recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett

Impact: Hanson is suffering from a strained lower back and is expected to miss just the minimum 15 days. He leads the Braves in both wins (12) and strikeouts (114) but has posted an unremarkable 4.29 ERA and an equally unimpressive 1.44 WHIP. Kris Medlen will remain in Atlanta's rotation as a result of the injury and may have some fantasy value. He is 2-1 with a 2.43 ERA and 39 strikeouts in 59.1 innings through his start Tuesday. Gearrin will work out of the pen and returns to a 3.38 ERA over two relief appearances.

Dodgers

Shane Victorino, OF - acquired from Philadelphia for RHPs Josh Lindblom and Ethan Martin and a player to be named or cash
Bobby Abreu, OF - designated for assignment

Impact: With the Phillies' hopes of competing in 2012 all but eliminated, they opted to cut loose two-thirds of their outfield, shipping Victorino to the Dodgers and sending Pence to the Giants in a separate deal. Victorino is a speedster who averaged 33 stolen bases a year from 2007 to 2010 before dropping to just 19 last season. He has already topped that mark this year, as he swiped 24 bags in 101 games with Philadelphia, while hitting .261 with nine home runs and 40 RBI. Abreu is hitting just .246 on the year with just two home runs and 22 RBI in 78 games with the Angels and Dodgers. His numbers have been on the decline the last several years, and at 38, he's unlikely to improve those numbers. Lindblom is 2-2 with a 3.02 ERA in 48 appearances for the Dodgers this year, while Martin has yet to pitch above Double-A.

Giants

Hunter Pence, OF - acquired with cash from Philadelphia for OF Nate Schierholtz, C Tommy Joseph and RHP Seth Rosin

Impact: Pence has been moved once again, as he now finds himself on the first-place Giants. The 29-year-old right fielder was shipped from the Astros to the Phillies prior to last year's July 31 trade deadline and was sent packing once again this year as the Phillies have fallen out of contention in the NL East. Pence has consistently put up solid offensive numbers throughout his career, and this year has been no exception. He joins San Fran with a .271 average, 17 home runs and 59 RBI over 101 games this season. Schierholtz has been used mostly in a backup role this season, but should receive more playing time with the Phillies. He's hitting .257 with five home runs and 17 RBI in 77 games with the Giants. John Mayberry Jr., Juan Pierre and Domonic Brown should also get plenty of playing time in the Phillies outfield. Joseph and Rosin both appear to be at least a year away from reaching the majors.

Marlins

Logan Morrison, OF - placed on the 15-day DL (right knee)
Ryan Webb, RHP - recalled from Triple-A New Orleans

Impact: The Marlins left fielder should miss at least three weeks and could opt for season-ending surgery on his right knee. Morrison had offseason surgery on the knee but has been dealing with ongoing pain throughout the season. The injury appears to have affected his numbers, as he is hitting just .230 with 11 home runs and 36 RBI through 93 games. Bryan Petersen, Donovan Solano, Austin Kearns, Scott Cousins, Greg Dobbs and newly-acquired Gorkys Hernandez could potentially see an increase in playing time as a result of Morrison's injury. Webb returns to a 5.50 ERA through 38 relief appearances this year with Miami.

Rangers

Mitch Moreland, 1B - activated from the 15-day DL
Leonys Martin, OF - optioned to Triple-A Round Rock

Impact: Moreland returned to the lineup Monday after missing more than a month with a strained left hamstring. He returns to a .272 average, 10 home runs and 25 RBI through 55 games and should get plenty of at-bats against right-handed pitching. He'll serve as the team's primary first baseman, bumping Michael Young back to the DH spot. Craig Gentry appears to be the most likely candidate to lose playing time as Josh Hamilton, David Murphy and Nelson Cruz will see less time at DH and more time in the outfield. Martin batted just .189 (7-for-37) with no home runs and five RBI in 15 games with the Rangers.

Ryan Dempster, RHP - acquired from Chicago Cubs for 3B Christian Villanueva and RHP Kyle Hendricks
Martin Perez, LHP - optioned to Triple-A Round Rock

Impact: The Rangers made a big move before the trade deadline, picking up Dempster from the Cubs. The 35-year-old righty has pitched well this season when healthy, as he owns a 2.25 ERA and has struck out 83 batters in 104 innings. A move to the American League and the hitter-friendly confines in Arlington could cause his ratios to increase. However, with the Rangers offense backing him up, his record could improve significantly. He has spent a couple stints on the DL this year, so his health could be a concern. Both players the Cubs received in exchange were playing High-A ball. Perez is 1-1 with a 4.05 ERA in 20 innings with the Rangers this year.

Yankees

Casey McGehee, 3B - acquired from Pittsburgh for RHP Chad Qualls

Impact: The Eric Chavez experiment didn't last long, as the Yankees picked up McGehee to man third base in Alex Rodriguez's absence. The 29-year-old corner infielder has seen his offense dip the last couple seasons after posting some decent numbers in 2009 and 2010. Since the start of the 2011 season, McGehee has hit just .226 over almost 250 games. Nevertheless, he still has decent power and could see his numbers improve as a result of playing in the Yankees' stacked lineup. He could have some fantasy value during A-Rod's recovery from a fractured left hand. Qualls is 2-1 with a 4.89 ERA in 43 appearances between the Phillies and Yankees and can be ignored in most fantasy leagues.
