Yoshinobu Yamamoto

27-Year-Old PitcherSP
Los Angeles Dodgers
2026 Fantasy Outlook
Yamamoto, in his second season stateside, shaved half a run off his ERA, finishing fourth among qualified starters with a 2.49 mark, while nearly doubling his regular-season workload from 90 to 173.2 innings. His 0.99 WHIP, meanwhile, ranked sixth among qualifiers, as he allowed just 113 hits and 59 walks compared to 201 strikeouts. The 27-year-old really shined during the Dodgers' postseason run with a 1.45 ERA and two complete games, including the first complete game in the World Series since 2015, even earning World Series MVP honors. Also a Cy Young finalist in the National League, Yamamoto held opponents under .200 on all three of his top offerings: the four-seamer, splitter and curveball. The split-finger pitch in particular was a standout, and his breakout on the game's biggest stage has thrust Yamamoto firmly into SP1 territory for 2026 drafts. There is the question of whether he can repeat the workload, and the walks are a tad high for an ace, but nonetheless he projects extremely favorably with the potential to add to his wins total. Teases perfect game in victory
PLos Angeles Dodgers
June 13, 2026
Yamamoto (7-4) earned the win over the White Sox on Saturday, allowing one run on one hit and no walks while striking out seven batters over 8.1 innings.
Analysis
Yamamoto was nearly untouchable Saturday, and he didn't allow a baserunner until Mookie Betts committed an error on a grounder with two outs in the eighth inning. The right-handed hurler still had a chance at a no-hitter, but that ended when Tristan Peters clubbed a solo shot leading off the bottom of the ninth. Though he had to settle for a dominant victory, Yamamoto did end up in the Dodgers' history book by retiring 45 consecutive batters dating back to his previous start -- a run exceeded in MLB history only by Yusmeiro Petit, who set down 46 straight hitters for the Giants in 2014. Yamamoto also recorded his fourth consecutive victory, and he hasn't allowed more than one run in five straight starts. On the season, the reigning World Series MVP has a standout 2.52 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and 80:15 K:BB over 85.2 innings spanning 13 starts.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2025
2024
The Japanese right-hander's MLB career got off to a rocky start as he surrendered five runs in one frame during his debut against the Padres, but he posted a 2.34 ERA in his next 13 starts before landing on the injured list with a rotator cuff strain. Yamamoto returned down the stretch for eight starts between the regular season and playoffs, during which he had a 3.64 ERA to help the Dodgers win the World Series. He had a 105:22 K:BB across 90 innings during the regular season, so the skills of a low-end SP1 are there, he just hasn't shown that he can log SP1-caliber innings yet. He is likely to open 2025 as the Dodgers' ace since Shohei Ohtani's left shoulder surgery will delay his return to the mound, and Yamamoto's strikeout ability and potential for wins will once again make him a hot commodity come draft day.
For the third consecutive year, Yamamoto won the Eiji Sawamura Award, Japan's equivalent of the Cy Young. He did it in 2023 on the strength of a 1.16 ERA and 176 strikeouts in 171 innings spanning 24 appearances, including a no-hitter in front of notable MLB executives in September. The Orix Buffaloes posted the right-hander for MLB teams this winter and an unprecedented bidding war ensued, with Yamamoto ultimately signing with the Dodgers for 12 years and $325 million, the largest contract ever for a pitcher. Still just 25 years old, Yamamoto features a mid-90s fastball and three secondary pitches highlighted by the splitter, all helped immensely by exceptional command. There is already considerable hype and that may be boosted slightly by recency bias after Kodai Senga made the transition to the majors look easy last season. Yamamoto could enter SP1 range in drafts come springtime.
