Premier League Golden Boot Watch: A New Leader

Despite failing to hit the back of the net in a scoreless draw against Chelsea this past weekend, Tottenham's Harry Kane moved ahead of Liverpool's Mohamed Salah as the favorite in the Golden Boot race. Salah, who also didn't score in his match against Brighton, remained at +450 while Kane moved to +400, which were his odds as recently as two weeks ago.

Kane's teammate Son Heung-Min not only failed to score in that Chelsea match but didn't even take a shot, which presumably played a small part in his odds moving from +850 to +1000, leaving us with four players under that line: Kane, Salah, Jamie Vardy (+600) and Dominic Calvert-Lewin (+600). The Everton striker continues to lead the Premier League in goals (10), with Son one behind, and Salah and Vardy two back.

We saw some movement near the top, with Bruno Fernandes going from +2500 to +2000 after he scored against Southampton, giving him seven goals for the season. The oddsmakers are obviously much more optimistic about him continuing it, as Callum Wilson also has seven goals but only improved from +6600 to +5000. Wilson scored his fourth open-play goal of the season this weekend against Crystal Palace, leaving him one goal short of his total from last year with Bournemouth in 35 appearances (32 starts).

Wilson's odds are the same as Riyad Mahrez's after the Manchester City attacker moved from +15000 to +5000 after bagging a hat trick against Burnley. It was a great performance but also just leaves him with four Premier League goals this season. Then again, teammate Sergio Aguero is still at +5000 and is without a goal in league play, so we can't really make much of it.

And going back to Liverpool for a moment, Salah and Mane didn't score against Brighton but Diogo Jota did, his second straight Premier League game with a goal, giving him five for the season plus four in the Champions League. His performance moved him from +3300 to +2000, leaving him with only six players with better odds to win the award.

We also had Raul Jimenez drop off the list, though that has to be because of the horrific skull fracture he suffered during Sunday's game against Arsenal. Jimenez underwent emergency surgery and is reportedly okay, but it's unclear if he'll be able to play again this season after such a traumatic episode.
