Match Preview

Sweden and Romania clash in their opening match of UEFA Euro 2020 qualifying at the Friends Arena on Saturday. Sweden will be looking to make their sixth consecutive appearance in the mega event, one they have been consistently participating in for years. However, their success has been limited, failing to clinch a spot in the knockout rounds in each of the last three tournaments, and they come in with just two wins in their last six matches, Therefore, manager Janne Andersson will have a lot of work to bring the best out of the available players to produce a positive result.

In the tournament's previous edition, Romania qualified after finishing second in the group stage but was eliminated in the following round.

Both teams have only competed once before, with Romania coming out top with a 1-0 score line in March last year.

Players to Watch

Ciprian Tatarusanu (G): Romania's Ciprian Tatarusanu is a permanent figure in the team and has shown time and again that he is a player who can be relied upon in big matches. The 33-year-old is in a great form of late for his club, Nantes in the French Ligue 1, where he has kept a clean sheet in  three  of last four matches. Therefore, manager Cosmin Contra will be hoping his trusted solider can live up to the expectations once again in a big match.

Emil Forsberg (M): Sweden's Emil Forsberg is a very talented attacking midfielder and has shown what he is capable of this season for RB Leipzig in the German Bundesliga. The 27-year-old already has three assists and a goal for the team, which become even more impressive considering his 1.4 shots on goal and 1.6 key passes per game. Those numbers suggest that Sweden will be once again depend on Forsberg to provide that the killer instinct in the match against Romania.

Nicolae Stanciu (F): Romania's Nicolae Stanciu is a proven goal scorer both club and country. The 25-year-old, who plays for Sparta Prague, has 10 goals for his country in 25 appearances, which shows why the visitors will be relying heavily on him to deliver in order to register a positive result against Sweden.
