Sent to 60-day injured list
The Nationals placed Williams (elbow) on the 60-day injured list Tuesday.
Analysis
The move frees a spot on the 40-man roster for the addition of Andre Granillo, who was acquired via trade from the Cardinals. Williams underwent an internal brace surgery on his right elbow last July and will sidelined for at least the first two months of the season while he continues his rehab.

Williams missed three-plus months of 2024 due to a right elbow flexor strain, but he was surprisingly dominant when healthy for the Nationals with a 2.03 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 59:18 K:BB over 66.2 innings. His average fastball velocity of 88.6 mph was the lowest of his career, but he used the four-seam fastball less and relied more on his sweeper, which helped produce a career-high 22.7 percent strikeout rate. He performed better than expected with a 3.82 xFIP and 3.13 xERA, so some regression is likely even if he pitches similarly in 2025, especially given the small sample size and waning velocity. Williams doesn't offer much strikeout upside and doesn't have a consistent history as a starter, so he seems unlikely to replicate that effectiveness in 2025 as a 33-year-old. He re-signed with Washington on a two-year contract this winter and is a likely bet to begin the season in the rotation, though he could also revert to more of a swingman role, in which he's had past success.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Potential target for Cubs
Williams could be a trade target for the Cubs ahead of the deadline, Jim Bowden of The Athletic speculates.
Analysis
There's no question the Cubs need to bolster their rotation if they want to make a deep playoff run in October. With that in mind, Williams is an arm they should target in the coming weeks. Williams' numbers aren't eye-popping by any means, but he could benefit from a change of scenery while playing in front of better defense. The 10-year veteran owns a 5.91 ERA across 13 starts with the Nationals this season.
