NFL Picks: Backing the Redskins, Bucs and Bills

Congratulations to Jeff Erickson who went 10-4 against the spread last week. Unfortunately, he dropped a game in the standings to DDD, Pianow and me as we all went 11-3. Had you simply taken the games that a majority of us took, you'd have gone 12-1 ATS, losing only with Miami on Sam Bradford's roll-out two point conversion throw to Steven Jackson.

Consensus Picks

This week we have three consensus picks: the Redskins, Buccaneers and Bills. Last week we went 1-0 to put us at 10-8-1 on the season. Last year we were 30-24-2 on consensus picks.

Erickson	I'm not ready to give credit to the Saints as a road favorite in a division game just yet. That said, I hate this week's slate - my least favorite one so far this year. At least five or six of my picks were 50-50 calls... How much does organizational history matter in a division game? The Steelers have absolutely owned the Bengals, even (especially, maybe) in Paul Brown Stadium. But that defense isn't the same as previous models, particularly with Troy Polamalu out again... I feel like the line has overreacted to the Ravens' defensive injuries - my theory is they also have excellent coaching, which makes up some of the gap... I think home field matters a lot for the Colts, and for Andrew Luck specifically.
Pianowski	I would have gone with the Patriots as the Best Bet had the line been a little lower. The Jets secondary is still pretty darn good when the opponent has 1-2 options to worry about, but New England is a quality and a quantity problem. You can't cover everybody.
Liss	Looks like I'm breaking up a couple would-be consensus picks with heavy favorites - the 49ers and Texans. My best bets are the Bills and Redskins.
Stopa	Despite their 2-4 record, I still see Dallas as a playoff-caliber team. That means they'll take care of Carolina, probably the NFC's worst team... Everyone loves the Packers now, so I have to fade them. The Rams D has been really good, and I suspect they'll play more zone than the Texans did... I think the Bills are an 8-8 type of team, whereas the Titans are a 4-12 squad. I'm surprised Buffalo isn't giving a half-point hook... Losing LarDarius Webb is big, but isn't it possible whoever is replacing Ray Lewis is actually better at this stage of his career, and we just don't know it yet? That line moving to a TD seems like an overreaction... The Pats might rebound and blow out the Jets, but you're sure paying a premium if you think so... I bet DDD after Week 1 that the Bucs would win more games than the Saints, so if TB is getting points at home, I have to stick to my guns. Let's see if he does the same.
Del Don	I liked about a half dozen games last week more than my "best bet" this week, so make of that what you will. Obviously, that means I found this week's slate particularly tough.
