Akira Schmid

Akira Schmid

26-Year-Old GoalieG
Florida Panthers
2026 Fantasy Outlook
Vegas' decision to lean on Schmid in a larger role paid off in 2025-26. The 26-year-old went 16-10-6 with a 2.59 GAA, an .893 save percentage and two shutouts across 34 regular-season games, splitting work behind a Golden Knights group that once again finished comfortably inside the playoff field. The volume hints at a 1B role rather than a true No. 1, and the rate stats are tied closely to Vegas' strong defensive structure. With Adin Hill and Carter Hart both under contract for 2026-27, Vegas opted to ship Schmid to Florida prior to free agency opening Fantasy managers should view Schmid as a deeper-league option with the potential to carve out a larger role if he can perform well with his new team, which is expected to bounce back after a down year. Schmid was dealt from the Golden Knights to the Panthers on Monday in exchange for a 2028 third-round pick.
ANALYSIS
Considering that the Panthers' goaltending duo of Sergei Bobrovsky and Daniil Tarasov is set to become unrestricted free agents, Schmid might have an opportunity to command a sizable role in 2026-27. It will be worth monitoring what the Panthers do with their goaltending situation when free agency begins, but Schmid could be an intriguing sleeper for fantasy managers this coming season, even if he's working in tandem with another netminder. The 26-year-old Schmid went 16-10-6 with a 2.59 GAA and an .893 save percentage over 34 regular-season games with Vegas in 2025-26. He will need a new contract as well, as he is a restricted free agent.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2023
Opinions on Schmid are likely to be divided heading into 2025-26. He struggled heavily for a bottom-dwelling AHL team, going 9-18-3 with a 3.58 GAA and a .886 save percentage over 30 games. However, behind the Golden Knights' defense, Schmid was 2-0-1 with a 1.26 GAA and a .944 save percentage over five games, four of which were in April. He's nothing more than a deep-league option in fantasy currently, but if he can win the backup job in training camp, he'll be an intriguing option for fantasy managers who have to dig deep for goalie depth. Schmid was promising at times with the Devils over the previous three years, so there is a little potential for him to become an NHL regular at age 25.
The 6-foot-five Schmid arrived via trade in the offseason on the heels of a 5-9-1, 3.15 GAA and .895 save percentage season in New Jersey. His numbers will trend up in Vegas' tight defensive structure, even if he doesn't improve his weaknesses. Schmid could quickly improve his rebound control, glove hand and readiness in the net under goaltending director and former big-man NHLer, Sean Burke. Schmid is down the Vegas depth chart with the arrival of Ilya Samsonov and will likely start in the AHL, but NHL games are likely and maybe more if Sammy struggles at all.
Vitek Vanecek had a good season as the Devils' starter in 2022-23, but Akira Schmid was also excellent when he got a chance to play. Schmid's strong performance forced the team to go with three netminders at times, and at 23 years old, Schmid's still got plenty of room to grow after posting a 2.13 GAA and a .922 save percentage over 18 regular-season contests last year. Schmid enters 2023-24 as the clear backup, but he should playcloser to 30 games this season, which gives him enough appeal to be a third or fourth goalie in most fantasy formats. If Vanecek struggles or goes down with an injury, Schmid will have a clear path to starter-level usage, at least temporarily. Don't forget about the youngster on draft day.

ANALYSIS
Schmid logged 19 NHL games this season in which he went 5-9-1 with a 3.15 GAA and .895 save percentage. While rosters haven't been finalized for the tournament, Schmid is the only backstop with NHL experience and should be in the mix for the starting gig when Switzerland faces Norway on May 10.
