After putting up a $1 million prize pool for the Crown Championship back in 2017, Supercell has decided to up the ante for the 2018 season with the introduction of the Clash Royale League. While the Crown Championship was all about individual play, the CRL is bringing team-based competition into the fold, and Supercell is doing it with the support of some of the biggest esports organizations in the world.
Earlier this year, Supercell put on the Clash Royale League Challenger in which 25 million players competed for a shot at becoming an esports pro in the CRL. Only 7,000 players made it to the next round and will now have a chance at being signed by a team in the coming months.
The level of enthusiasm we've seen from the most respected esports teams in the world is as humbling as it is exciting, and we're looking forward to supporting them in order to grow the Clash Royale esports ecosystem for our players, said Tim Ebner, who oversees esports at Supercell. Staying true to the Supercell vision of making games everyone can enjoy for years and years, the Clash Royale League will continue to offer as many players as possible an open path to competing at the highest level.
At the start of the CRL, there will be five regions: North America, Europe, Mainland China, Asia, and Latin America. Across these five regions, 36 of the most high-profile teams in esports will be fielding teams. Highlighting the bunch are the likes of Cloud9, Team SoloMid, Immortals, Counter Logic Gaming, Tribe Gaming, 100 Thieves, Fnatic, Misfits, SK Gaming, G2 Esports, Team Liquid, Kingzone, LGD, and PONOS Sports, to name a few. Each region will have anywhere from four to 12 teams and will field between four and six players per team. You can find a full list of all the teams down below.
"Having seen the growth of Clash Royale first hand since its launch, I couldn't be more thrilled about the unveiling of the Clash Royale League, said Patrick "Chief Pat" Carney, CEO of Tribe Gaming. "At Tribe, we're excited to be welcoming in a number of iconic esports organizations into the Clash Royale ecosystem, and we look forward to doing battle with them in each and every arena."
Fans can sink their teeth into the CRL this Spring as Mainland China and Asia will both have a Spring Season. China will run from March 23 - June 3, while Asia will run from April 27 - July 14. The other regions will have a Fall Season that starts up this August and everything will culminate with the World Finals in Winter 2018 where another hefty $1 million will be up for grabs.
If the Crown Championship was any indication, the Clash Royale League will certainly be another esports event to keep your eyes on throughout the year.
