2024 Fantasy Outlook
Bey suffered a left ACL tear in March of 2023 and is unlikely to be ready for the start of next season. However, this didn't stop the Wizards from signing the 25-year-old forward to a three-year, $20 million contract this offseason. Even when available, Bey had a down year in 2023-24, averaging 13.7 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 63 appearances, including 51 starts. While the counting stats were solid, his efficiency was poor. Bey shot 41.6 percent from the field and converted just 31.6 percent of his 5.7 three-point attempts per contest last season. Even with the departure of Deni Avdija, Bey will still have plenty of competition for playing time in Washington's forward rotation when he is ready to take the court, as Kyle Kuzma, Bilal Coulibaly and Corey Kispert will all be vying for minutes. With Bey likely to miss a large chunk of the beginning of the 2024-25 campaign, fantasy managers should only draft him if they plan on stashing him on the IR to provide a scoring boost later on in the campaign. Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary

Bey was born Apr. 9, 1999 in Charlotte, North Carolina but grew up in Largo, Maryland. He is the son of Drewana Bey, a high school principal who played college basketball at Charlotte. As a freshman, Bey attended DeMatha Catholic High School before transferring to Sidwell Friends School, known for its strength in academics and basketball. Bey also played AAU ball with D.C. Premier. He helped lead Sidwell Friends to a state championship as a junior, averaging 14.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game. As a senior, he averaged 21 points and eight rebounds per high school contest. For college, Bey originally committed to NC State, then de-committed and opted to attend Villanova one month later. As a sophomore at Villanova, Bey won the Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year award and was named to the First-team All-Big East. Bey progressed from a "glue guy" to a primary contributor between his freshman and sophomore seasons at Villanova. He took a bit of a backseat in the scoring department to the likes of Eric Paschall and Phil Booth his freshman year, but still managed respectable averages of 8.2 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.3 assists. That was enough for a nod on the Big East All-Freshman team in 2018-19. With the aforementioned players gone for Bey's sophomore season, he was forced to take a much bigger scoring role. Bey put up 16.1 points that year, which included a career-high 33 points Jan. 11 against Georgetown. He racked up plenty of accolades for a Villanova team in the running for a No. 1 seed, including an All-Big East first-team nod and being named a Wooden Award finalist. He also won the Julius Erving Award, given to the top collegiate small forward.

ANALYSIS
Key tore his ACL in March and is still rehabbing but has done some on-court work during Washington's training camp. However, he's still not cleared for contact and is likely months away from returning to game action.

It was surprising to see Bey traded from Detroit to Atlanta, and it was even more frustrating for fantasy managers. His role in Detroit wasn't exactly consistent, but going into Atlanta's deep rotation killed his fantasy value. Over his final 26 games of the year, Bey averaged just 11.5 points, 4.8 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 0.8 steals per game. He also came off the bench in 18 of those and was held to a 25-minute role. The only silver lining was his 2.0 three-pointers per game, but there are too many mouths to feed in Atlanta for Bey to remain a standard-league asset. Trae Young and Dejounte Murray swallow up all of the usage, while Bogdan Bogdanovic and De'Andre Hunter take wing minutes. With all that said, Bey has a 50-point game under his belt and can be one of the most lethal shooters in the NBA. Optimists would say that the John Collins trade will open up more opportunities for Bey, but a best-case scenario would be the guy we saw in Detroit. Bey averaged 16.1 points, 5.4 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 0.9 steals and 2.6 threes in his last full season with the Pistons. That would be a useful fantasy player, and it's worth keeping an eye on to see what his role looks like. Look for him to go near the end of most normal drafts.
After an intriguing rookie season, Bey had a mixed sophomore campaign. The No. 19 overall pick out of Villanova in 2020 started the year struggling to shoot the ball. For the first three months of the season (32 appearances), Bey averaged 14.3 points on splits of 37/32/83. However, the new year brought newfound efficiency. From Jan. 1 onward (49 appearances), Bey averaged 17.2 points on 41/36/82 shooting. Notably, he even had a 51-point outburst against the Magic in mid-March, going 10-of-14 from three. The longball is Bey's specialty - he made 2.9 per game after the new year - but he's also displayed a more diverse skillset. During the season's home stretch, he added 4.9 rebounds and 3.1 assists in his 32.8 minutes per game, and he also got to the free-throw line a decent 3.2 times. Whether or not Bey can become a playmaker at the NBA level remains to be seen. Cade Cunningham and Jaden Ivey will handle the vast majority of the offensive initiation, though Jerami Grant shipping out to Portland opens up some usage that could go to Bey. However, it remains to be seen how much usage Bojan Bogdanovic will take on -- the Pistons trading for him late this offseason. Despite the spotty shooting, the 23-year-old ranked 108th in per-game fantasy production last season, so optimistic fantasy managers have reason to draft him sooner than that this time around.
The Pistons grabbed Bey with the 19th pick in the 2020 NBA Draft. Detroit believed they were selecting a sharpshooter with length, and Bey did not disappoint. The 6-foot-7 wing drained 175 three-pointers in his rookie season -- tops amongst all rookies. He also shot 38.0 percent from behind the arc, which was good for seventh amongst rookies with at least 65 attempts. Bey's 857 total points were also second amongst rookies. Of course, most NBA freshmen were playing on squads with more talent than the rebuilding Pistons. When Detroit bought out Blake Griffin in mid-February, Bey was named the starter. In his 53 starts, Bey delivered 13.6 points, 4.9 boards, 2.7 three-pointers and 0.9 steals over 30.8 minutes per game. Bey is likey the starter at small forward heading into the 2021-22 season unless coach Dwane Casey starts Kelly Olynyk at the four and Jerami Grant at the three. Either way, he'll fight off reserves Hamidou Diallo and Josh Jackson in an effort to continue seeing more than 30 minutes per contest, which seems likely. Expect the usual sophomore shooting improvement from Bey this season. During his last season at Villanova, the wing shot 47.7 percent from the field. So an improvement on his rookie season's 40.4 percent seems likely. Gradual improvement in most counting stats also seems likely as the 22-year-old and the Pistons continue to improve.

Sharp as starter
FAtlanta Hawks
December 4, 2023
Bey is averaging 12.1 points, 5.4 rebounds, 0.9 assists and 1.6 steals in seven games as a starter this season.
ANALYSIS
Bey's efficiency this season is impressive, as the 24-year-old forward is shooting 51.2 percent from the field and 40.0 percent from beyond the arc -- representing one of only 21 qualifiers who have started at least five contests to post such efficiency while attempting over 8.0 shots per game. Bey's volume of 8.8 shots per game places him on the lower end of the spectrum, but he's converting at a high level through Atlanta's first 19 games. As a starter, his shooting slash climbs to 53.6/43.8/91.7 percent with 2.0 made threes per night, and he'll continue serving a central role with Jalen Johnson amid a multi-week absence due to a fractured wrist.
